General Information

TVM450/S/TVM550/S/TVM550II/TVM550IIS Owner’s Manual Page 1-1

1 GENERAL INFORMATIONDESCRIPTION OF THE TVM450/S TVM550/SThe TVM450, TVM450S, TVM550, and TVM550S are rebroadcast-quality, phase-locked loop (PLL)-synthesized, frequency-agile, community antenna television(CATV) and cable system television-distribution modulators. The TVM450 modelsrange from 54 to 450 MHz, and the TVM550 models range from 54 to 550 MHz foruse in domestic systems. Both modulators use an open-architecture circuit and chassis design that allowssystem growth with multiple field configurations. The TVM450/S and TVM550/S are designed to be the primary building blocks ofan intelligent CATV distribution system. At the heart of these modulators isSCC's PLL-synthesized, dual-conversion up/down converter. The conversion process uses SCC's high-level mixing, which eliminates out-of-bandnoise floor and spurious emission problems. High-level mixing and superior designallow the TVM450/S and TVM550/S to meet the NTC-7-recommended specificationsfor a 550 MHz spectrum, without the use of external bandpass filters. The TVM550/S and TVM550/S modulators use a unique nonvolatile microprocessortuning circuit. Available is an optional Composite IF Loop kit that allows the externalinput of either aural, visual, or a composite IF signal through a special loop. Analternate IF option is also available.Channels are selected with a front panel rotary switch, and the modulators canbe set to only a legitimate output frequency. When a modulator is on line and thefrequency output is changed, a circuit mutes the RF output until the modulatorhas locked onto the new output channel frequency.Front panel potentiometers for varying video modulation, audio deviation, andvisual/aural carrier ratio have center detents. This type potentiometer allows the user toleave the front panel controls in their center positions while properly adjusting receiveroutputs to the modulator's correct input levels. RF output is also controlled by a likepotentiometer. The user can adjust the satellite receiver, for 1.0 V p-p video and0 dBm peak audio/Broadcast Television Standards Committee (BTSC) input levels, without the use of expensive test equipment.

DESCRIPTION OF THE TVM550II/TVM550IISSCC’s superior circuit construction is carried over from previous TVM models. These new models differ from the preceding TVM550 models in that they sport amuch-improved power supply that reduces noise and improves reliability. TheTVM550II uses the CMA60 audio demodulator, while the TVM550IISincorporates an SCC DSG2000BD digital stereo audio demodulator.

the unit is plugged into the AC power and is operational.2. VIDEO OVER MOD – Red LED. Lights when the video depth of modulation

level exceeds 87.5 percent modulation.3. OFFSET – Green LED. Lights when the selected channel has a prepro-

grammed FCC-assigned offset frequency. The light goes out when the OFFSETswitch (27) is in the OFF or AUTO position. See rear panel callout (27) for addi-tional switch settings.

4. RF OUTPUT – Green LED. Lights when RF output is not muted, and whenthe phase-locked loop (PLL) is locked on-channel. The RF output is con-trolled by the CHANNEL SELECT switch (6) or during a power-up condition. When this LED is off, the RF output is muted to –75 dBc, eliminating an un-wanted output during a tuning sequence or powering-up condition.

5. CHANNEL OUTPUT – Red, dual-digit LED numeric display. Displays thecurrent channel number being output to the RF OUT jack.

6. CHANNEL SELECT – Rotary switch. Rotating this switch clockwise orcounterclockwise changes the channel number sequentially higher or lower, respectively. When rotated to a different channel, RF OUT is muted for ap-proximately four seconds. The RF OUTPUT LED goes out during this period.

7. VIDEO MODULATION – Potentiometer. Adjusts the video modulation level. The center detent position is preset for an 87.5 percent depth of modulation, with a 1.0 V peak-to-peak video input signal.

8. VIDEO/AUDIO RATIO – Potentiometer. The center detent position is cali-brated for –15 dBc aural carrier output (maintained throughout the RFLEVEL (9) range).

9. RF LEVEL – Potentiometer. Rotating clockwise or counterclockwise in-creases or decreases RF OUTPUT level (+45 to +60 dBmV). It is recom-mended that these units be operated at +58 to +60 dBmV.

10. AUDIO DEVIATION – Seven-segment LED bar display. Indicates the peakaural deviation in percent. When the sixth bar of this display is lit, a repre-sentation of 100 percent or 25 kHz peak aural deviation is present. The sev-enth bar represents overdeviation and should light only occasionally. The bardisplay is precalibrated with an internal 15 kHz low-pass filter for accuratemonaural or BTSC (L + R) indication.

4 INSTALLATION AND OPERATIONINSTALLATIONRemove the TVM modulator from its shipping container and inspect it for anyphysical damage.Install the modulator into position in a 19-inch rack panel. Support the modulatorwhile installing the four front panel mounting screws.

NOTEThe unit weighs approximately 15 pounds (6.8 kilograms). It may be neces-sary to have two people handle the modulator while the front panel mount-ing screws are installed.

The nameplate on the rear of the modulator contains information concerning ACpower requirements. Make sure that the power receptacle is of the same voltagebefore plugging in the AC power cord.

There is no AC power On/Off switch. The POWER indicator on the front panel ofthe modulator will light when the power cord is plugged in. The CHANNELOUTPUT numeric light-emitting diode (LED) will display the channel numberstored in the nonvolatile read-only memory (ROM). Approximately four secondsafter power is applied, the RF OUTPUT LED will light. If the selected channelhas an assigned FCC offset frequency, the FCC OFFSET indicator will also light.

NOTEWhen installing more than one TVM modulator into an equipment rack, always leave at least one rack unit between each of them for ventilation.

INTERCONNECTIONThese modulators are designed for a headend environment. They accept separateleft- and right-channel audio (TVM450S and TVM550S or TVM550IIS), monauralaudio (TVM450, TVM550, or TVM550II), and composite video, via separate inputs. Each modulator provides both visual and aural IF outputs to external equipment forsignal processing. The processed signals then return to the modulator’s visual andaural IF input jacks. For local TV applications, each modulator receives on one TV broadcast channeland modulates on another TV broadcast channel. Baseband or IF signals canalso be used.Any TVM modulator can be used in a supertrunking environment. One modulatorinstalled at a remote antenna site drives several trunking lines.

HeadendAll TVM-series units can be configured for multiple applications in a headend in-stallation. See Figure 4-1.

1. The first configuration uses video and monaural audio signals made avail-able by the satellite receiver. The modulator then broadcasts on the TVchannel selected on the TVM450/550/550II front panel.

9018

Figure 4-1. Typical Satellite Headend Installation

2. The second configuration provides a video and BTSC stereo (baseband)signal to the modulator, using the CSG60 module in-line, to generate theBTSC stereo signal. The modulator then broadcasts on the TV channel se-lected on the TVM450/550/550II front panel.

3. The third configuration illustrates the video/stereo digital audio hookup forthe TVM550IIS with its standard-equipment DSG2000BD module.

4. The fourth configuration allows direct connection between the satellite re-ceiver and the modulator for stereo installations. This is accomplished in theTVM450S or TVM550S models, which have the CSG60 BTSC stereo gen-erator installed as standard equipment.

VIDEO – A 75 ohm baseband video signal 0.5 to 1.5 V p-p (1.0 V p-p optimum),should be inserted into the rear panel VIDEO IN connector.MONAURAL AUDIO – A balanced 600-ohm baseband audio signal, –10 to+10 dBm peak program (0 dBm optimum), should be connected to the rear panelscrew terminals. If the audio source does not have a balanced output, use thePlus and Ground screw terminals.

EXTERNAL BTSC – A baseband 600 ohm audio signal, –10 to +10 dBm peak pro-gram (0 dBm L + R optimum), can be connected to the rear panel screw terminals. Inthis configuration, the rear panel Audio switch should be set to BTSC. This settingturns off the internal pre-emphasis and recalibrates the seven-segment audio indicatorbar display for a BTSC input mode. (Note: the front panel BTSC LED will light.)

• A 4.5 MHz FM subcarrier from +30 to +60 dBmV (+35 dBmV optimum)can be inserted into the rear panel 4.5 MHz IN connection. The rear panel4.5 MHz INT/EXT switch should be in the EXT (external) position. Thisdefeats the internal 4.5 MHz signal and reroutes the 4.5 MHz subcarrierpath. (Note: the front panel BTSC LED will light.)

• A 41.25 MHz FM subcarrier, +25 dBm can be inserted at the rear panelaural IF LOOP IN. The rear panel 4.5 MHz INT/EXT switch should be inthe EXT position. This defeats the internal 4.5 MHz signal. (Note: the frontpanel BTSC LED will light.)

INTERNAL CSG60 BTSC – The TVM450S and TVM550S modulators have abuilt-in CSG60 BTSC Stereo Generator for integrated BTSC/Modulator opera-tion. At the rear panel, a Left/Right baseband audio signal, –10 to +10 dBm peakprogram (0 dBm optimum), balanced 600-ohm signal, can be inserted. This inputcan be triggered by connecting the rear panel CONT (Control) and GND(Ground) screw terminals for commercial insertion. When triggered, theLeft/Right inputs are disconnected and the Mono audio signal is bridged into theLeft/Right audio path, thus maintaining the BTSC spectrum.INTERNAL DSG2000BD – The TVM550IIS modulator has a built-in DSG2000BDdigital stereo module that provides ultraclean stereo. Similar in operation to theCSG60, this unit allows direct output of stereo signals. It can also be fitted with AGCand SAP audio.

OPERATIONRefer to Figure 3-1 for control locations.

TVM450/TVM550/TVM550IIChannel Selection1. Rotate the CHANNEL SELECT switch until the desired channel number is

displayed on the CHANNEL OUTPUT numeric display.NOTE

The RF output is muted while the CHANNEL SELECT switch is rotated, until an internal phase lock is achieved.

2. Rotating the CHANNEL SELECT switch clockwise (CW) increments thechannel number, and rotating this switch in a counterclockwise (CCW) di-rection decrements the channel number.

2. Rotate the RF LEVEL adjustment until the desired output level is achieved. The RF output is adjustable to +60 dBmV, but the unit should be operated at+58 to +60 dBmV for best results.

FCC Offset SwitchThe FCC OFFSET switch provides the flexibility to:

• Select the OFF position to turn the automatic offset feature off, or toremove any offset frequencies.

• Select one of four manual offset frequencies, as shown in Figure 4-4.

• Select the AUTO position (TVM450 only) to allow the read-only memory(ROM) or PROM (programmable ROM) to select the offset as pro-grammed for each channel.

9038

Figure 4-4. FCC Offset Switches

CAUTIONCare must be taken when using the FCC OFFSET switch to select a man-ual offset frequency (TVM450 only). If a channel is selected that has anFCC-assigned offset and the FCC OFFSET switch is set to any of themanual offset frequencies, the actual offset frequency is not as selected. For instance, if the FCC-assigned offset frequency in ROM is –12.5 kHzand a manual offset frequency of –12.5 kHz is selected, the resultant offsetfrequency will actually be –25 kHz.On the other hand, if the FCC-assigned offset frequency is –12.5 kHz andan offset frequency of +12.5 kHz is manually selected, the resultant offsetfrequency will be 0 kHz (or no offset). See Table 4-1 to make sure the cho-sen FCC OFFSET switch manual position is correct.A TVM550-series unit assigns only the frequency selected.

3. Install the new PK00 board in its spot inside the front panel.NOTE

The remaining board and the board removed earlier are both named PK00.The new one is a double-decked chassis board, and is the only one that willfit into the space provided.

4. Install the front panel plate to cover the PK00 board.5. Reattach all cables removed in step 2 under CSG60 Installation.

Cable ModificationThis section is for units with SN 03Uxxxxxx or earlier.1. On the P500 board, the W501 cable is too short to reach the PK00 board

and JK02. This cable must be lengthened by five inches, using the samecolor and gauge wire. After lengthening it, use shrink wrap tubing to coverthe exposed areas of the wire.

2. On the rear plate terminal block, the GND and CONT cables need to belengthened by three inches. Use the same gauge and color wire, and useshrink wrap tubing to cover the exposed splice areas. Then, plug this as-sembly into the PK00 board at JK03.

Connector ModificationOn the CMA60, unsolder the longest coaxial cable from its connector and resol-der it to the VIDEO OUT connector on the CSG60. Electrically, the VIDEO IN andVIDEO OUT jacks will be parallel. A wire connecting the center pins of the twojacks should now be seen. If there is no grounding tab on the VIDEO OUT con-nector, solder the wire directly to the VIDEO IN connector.

InterconnectionsRefer to Table 5-1 when making connections between PC boards.Performance of the unit depends on it. See Figure 5-8. When tie-wrapping thecables, leave some slack to those cables that have RF connectors—they caneasily be pulled out of their sockets.

CSG60 Installation Notes1. The 4.5 MHz connector on the rear panel plate is used only under certain

conditions and is not operative.2. When tie-wrapping, it is important to keep the wires and cables that go from

the microprocessor board to the RF block SEPARATED from the CSG60cables.

CALT45The CALT45 is an optional, vertically mounted PC board that provides anALTERNATE COMP (composite) IF IN input to the TVM-series modulators, exceptwhen the CIF450-1 option is installed. The CALT45 module is designed primarily togive users the option of quickly switching to an alternate receiver/modulator combina-tion on numerous channels for civil defense or other time-critical reasons.Switching to ALTERNATE COMP IF occurs either automatically or manually.Automatic switching occurs when the ALTERNATE COMP IF input level reaches30 dBmV ± 3 dB. Manual switching occurs when the REMOTE IF SELECTswitch closes to ground, regardless of level.

CALT45 Installation NotesThe CALT45 board mounts vertically in the TVM-series modulators between theunit rear panel and the up/down RF converter module. Because of the proximityof other boards, complete the cable connections before installing the board.Make sure the component side of the CALT45 board faces the unit rear panel.

NOTEThe CALT45 has a built-in CBP45. The CALT45 is not compatible withTVM-series modulators containing a CIF450 composite loop kit or a CBP45or CBP45-1 filter module and loop connectors.

Later TVM450 and TVM550-series units have both an auxiliary IF opening and aremote control opening in the rear panel. Earlier TVM450 units do not have theauxiliary IF opening. If a TVM450 does not have an auxiliary IF opening in therear panel, drill a standard F-type connector hole (7/16-inch) one inch directly tothe right of the REMOTE IF SELECT hole (between the REMOTE IF SELECThole and the VISUAL IF IN hole).Test points TP02/TP03 on the CALT45 board may have to be unsoldered tomatch the attenuation of the TVM IF combiner board.

CALT45 Application NotesA minimum signal level of 38 dBmV is required at the ALTERNATE COMP IF INport to produce a proper level (60 dBmV) at the modulator’s primary RF output. However, 38 dBmV is well above the threshold level (30 dBmV ± 3 dB) for switchingto the alternate modulator. Therefore, during setup, the most technically soundmethod to switch to the alternate modulator is to set the modulator to produce38 dBmV at the ALTERNATE COMP IF IN port first. Then, turn off the backupmodulator. To switch to the alternate modulator, power the unit up.The REMOTE IF SELECT switch can be used to manually switch toALTERNATE COMP IF IN input for manual control systems. However, the Automode must be disabled by grounding the REMOTE IF SELECT.

CALT45 Installation Verification Procedure1. Connect the IF output from another modulator to the ALTERNATE COMP IF

input.2. Verify that the TVM450/TVM550 automatically switches to the alternate IF

when the level reaches 30 dBmV ± 3 dB.

3. Verify that the TVM450/TVM550 manually switches to the alternate IF as theREMOTE IF SELECT is grounded, regardless of input level.

4. Verify that the TVM450/TVM550 RF output generates 60 dBmV when auto-matically or manually switching to the alternate IF.

AGC (TVM550IIS)AGC OperationThe AGC can process a Left and Right stereo pair, plus two independent audiochannels (SAP and AUX). Each of the four channels enters at a rear panel con-nector and is buffered before the AGC subassembly. When the AGC is OFF, theaudio signals bypass the AGC subassembly, and the normal front-panel audioadjustments are functional. See Table 5-3 for the relationship of peak input tomodulation and peak output of a reference receiver.

Configuring the AGC2000Before installation, review the setting of the Unity Gain jumper (P7) by comparingthe program material and input levels to be expected Table 5-4. The factory de-fault setting will most likely provide satisfactory operation and should be used if indoubt. The jumper has four positions that indicate an average audio level overtime (see Figure 5-17). Users may move the jumper to give lower average audiolevels for coordination with other channels in the system. However, users cannotmove the jumper to give higher audio level if the amplitude excursions exceedthe limiting value. As a rule of thumb, signals with minimal excursions in dynamiclevel may benefit from the –6 dB setting, assuming the average level is accept-able, while signals with extreme excursions within the program material maybenefit from the –15 setting to prevent limiting.

Principles of OperationWith the AGC switch OFF, the AGC2000 has no effect on signal levels, and ad-justments may be made manually with the front panel controls. When ON, thegain of the four signals (LEFT, RIGHT, SAP, and AUX) are automatically con-trolled. Left and Right signal power levels are sensed with a true RMS sensorand summed. The average is applied to gain-control amplifiers for the stereopair. The two additional channels are monitored with true RMS sensing, with in-dependent gain control applied to separate gain-control amplifiers. RMS powersensing is performed throughout, because RMS sensing more closely conformsto the human ear mechanisms that either peak or average deviation sensing. The power input is compared to the reference level determined by the Unity Gainjumper (P7). Input signals above that level are reduced in amplitude (over time)while signals below that level are increased in amplitude (over time) in a ratio of4:1 input to output. (See Table 5-4.) For example, if the reference level is set to–12 dB, an input signal of –2 dB will be 10 dB above the reference level. TheAGC reduces this difference to one fourth of that value, or 2.5 dB. The output willbe –9.5 dB, or 2.5 dB above the reference value. The system has a ‘quiet’ detector that freezes gain changes and holds for 30to 60 minutes when the level drops sharply, i.e., more than 18 dB. This preventsgain increases from outputting background noise when no signal is present. To prevent overmodulation, the unit includes a limiter circuit with extremely fasttime constants. It aggressively slows the gain increase in a smooth manner toprevent distortion byproducts. The last 2 dB of output (0 to –2 dB) are reservedfor the limiting process. Hard clipping can occur only when input buffers areoverdriven (above +18 dBm).The gain adjustments contain specific lag times to provide the listener with anadded perception of wide dynamic range. Sudden loud passages are reduced ingain in a short but not instantaneous time that leaves the sensation of extremeloudness without overdriving the system. Softer passages are increased in gainover a longer period to provide consistent output levels without noticeable fluc-tuations in quiet passages. Gain control without these limiting and gain lag timecharacteristics may sound harsh, flat or overly compressed.Users need to select a unity gain point that allows headroom for their maximumRMS power excursions. The default setting of –12 dB tends to force the averageaudio level to this reference level, and is most likely to be the correct setting un-der almost all conditions. In normal operation, the LEDs should never show modulation over 100% be-cause of the soft clipping. If the LED bar graph shows consistently low levels thatare never limited, consider increasing the reference level setting to increase av-erage power level to the Stereo Generator to improve signal-to-noise and bal-ance levels between the modulated channel and others in the system.
