Australia: The Time Traveller's Guide: The Wild Years

Sunday, 8 April 2012

After navigating the perils at the end of the Permian, our journey spends tonight's episode of Australia: The Time Traveller’s Guide in the Mesozoic just in time for the Age of Dinosaurs, Down Under.

Things get off to a shaky start though with the planet left so devastated that the landscape where Sydney now stands was a sandy wasteland. Until recently, nearly everything we've known about the Age of Dinosaurs has come from other continents.

But Australia languishes as a Mesozoic backwater no longer. New discoveries are revealing a southern landscape ruled with a reptilian rod: dinosaurs stomped in the west, stampeded in the east and shivered in the south. Some were among the largest dinosaurs to have walked the planet. In today's desert heart we plunge into an ancient inland sea, full of monsters. But reptiles didn't have the world all to themselves. Mammals like the enigmatic platypus lived alongside them, ready for their moment in the sun.

Waking the Dead: Soldarity: Part 1

Sunday, 8 April 2012

The team is called to a subterranean chamber where the skeletal remains of a man have been deposited. Peace symbols are decipherable on the corpse's jacket, pertinent when his location is directly beneath the Ministry of Defence.

MI5 tell Boyd (Trevor Eve) that the find pertains to an issue of national security as the body belongs to notorious Falklands' veteran-turned-peace activist, Piers Kennedy (Adam Rayner), missing since 1983 and rumoured by conspiracy theorists to have been killed by the state.

The original investigation into Piers's disappearance focused on the founder of the Campaign Against Nuclear War, Ralph Palmer (Jack Shepherd). The co-founder of CANW, his partner Bonnie (Penny Downie), was having an affair with Piers, the movement's new poster boy.

Another focus was Piers's jilted fiancée, Lucy Christie (Anna Chancellor - The Hour), daughter of the Junior Minister for Defence at the time and now a Tory MP.

Grace (Sue Johnston) discloses a personal connection to the case. She was a demonstrator when Piers gave a landmark anti-nukes speech. Whilst admitting sympathy to their cause, she doesn't mention her involvement with another veteran-turned-activist, Murray (John McArdle), who served with Piers in the Falklands and with whom she tries to secretly meet up.

The team pull in Lucy's father, John Christie (John Shrapnel), now an executive in the company standing to benefit from the government's multi-billion-pound overhaul of its nuclear deterrent.

A Farmer's Life For Me

Tuesday, 10 April 2012 FinalNine couples of would-be farmers have been whittled down to just two by self-made pig farmer, Jimmy Doherty. He faces his toughest decision yet, as he must announce who should have the chance to run their very own 10-hectare farm for a year.

To help him make up his mind, he has come up with the farming day from hell. Each couple must undergo a daunting series of livestock and arable challenges that involve herding and shearing sheep and ploughing and seeding land.

But the most difficult test of all is when the fledgling farmers must present their business plan for what they would do with the farm if they won. Emotions run high as everyone knows any mistake at this stage could end in disaster.

Country Town Rescue

Tuesday, 10 April 2012

Country Town Rescue is the compelling story of how ordinary Australians come together to save the small rural town of Trundle, whose falling population threatens its very existence.

But Trundle isn't going down without a fight. Town members have heard about a scheme that just might work for them. The idea is simple. Rent out some of the abandoned farmhouses for just a dollar a week and attract new families to the town. They call it 'Trundle Tree Change'.

This week the Guerke's relationship with their landlord has deteriorated further and the committee meets to discuss a solution. When Jo and Andrew Gallen arrive, Jo tracks down Dannielle and gets the job of cook at the Trundle Pub.

The Elemam family has been unhappy since they arrived, farmer Ben takes Nabih on a muster to try and engage him in country life. Christie gets a visit from committee members Cherie Quade and Dol Wright who are desperate for the Elemams to stay.

At the Trundle Health Centre, Tony and Claire have started work but five weeks on are devastated to discover that due to a bureaucratic stuff up they haven't been paid, and they default on their mortgage. Tony Moore drafts a letter to the shadow health minister about the situation and breaks down as he reads it out to wife, Claire.

Artscape: John Waters In Conversation With Virginia Trioli

Tuesday, 10 April 2012

Virginia Trioli talks with cult icon John Waters - a filmmaker, writer, stand-up comedian, visual artist and art collector responsible for such trash cinema classics as Pink Flamingos, Cry-Baby and the film that he's best known for, 1988's Hairspray. Waters's films, which rarely shy from controversy, depict the freakier side of society in a very camp style with the aim of celebrating the underdog.

Directing movies since the age of 16, Waters filmed primarily in his blue collar home town of Baltimore with cast members who lived in the area. One of the standout characters was known simply as Divine. Played by Waters's boyhood friend Glenn Milstead, Divine was an eye-catching persona based around the concept of ‘Jane Mansfield combined with Godzilla to scare hippies’. Milstead was a regular feature in Waters's films up until his death, in 1988.

Waters's involvement in other art forms echoes his desire to challenge and be different. He has created photo-based artwork and installations that have been exhibited internationally and is an avid collector of contemporary art.Now in his 60s, Waters is finding it hard to complete his next project, strangely a children's Christmas film called Fruitcake, but he is undaunted. "I write a book if I can't make a movie or I do an art show. I have different ways of telling stories."

Featuring footage from films that are still considered shocking today, Trioli's interview showcases the many talents of a man not suitable for the easily offended.

River Cottage: Summer's Here

Thursday, 12 April 2012

Hugh wants to run a leftovers night at the River Cottage Canteen. Together with River Cottage chef Tim Maddams, they make canapés from leftover fish, gnocchi from roast potatoes and puddings from breadcrumbs.

River Cottage has been attempting to do its bit for the environment, but Hugh would like to do more with the used cooking oil he and his chefs produce. He takes his car to Axe Valley Community College where chemistry students are running a program turning waste oil into car fuel.

Fishing has long been a favourite way of sourcing food for Hugh, but one thing he has never tried is throw-netting for mullet.

This year, Hugh is out to banish the sliced white loaf, so River Cottage baker, Dan Stevens, sets out to convince ‘can't cook’ nursery school teacher Sarah Bilson of the joys of home bread making.

Hugh is off to Manchester to meet with food heroes Marg Dwyer and Doreen Wilkinson, who are tackling local youth crime by growing vegetables.

Catalyst

Thursday, 12 April 2012

This week there is a special Catalyst report into the complex world of those for whom having an orgasm is an unrelenting nightmare.

Orgasm is arguably the most intense and pleasurable experience. But what happens when your desire for orgasm becomes a necessity? Or what if having an orgasm makes you sick?

In this episode, Dr Maryanne Demasi travels to Europe to meet a few women suffering from a bizarre condition which has them constantly on the brink of an orgasm. It's known as Persistent Genital Arousal Disorder (PGAD). The problem is that 'relieving' this urge doesn't fix the problem. These women have to live with the stigma of having this disorder, often being labelled as nymphomaniacs.

In the Netherlands, Dutch Professor Marcel Waldinger says he is inundated with requests for help from women who have this problem. He has dedicated the last decade to finding ways to help these patients. He’s even seen men who are constantly aroused and complain of PGAD. Maryanne explores the current treatments being offered in Europe and Australia to help these patients restore their lives.

AND... there's more bad news... for the blokes at least. A growing number of men are fronting up to the doctor with another embarrassing condition called Post Orgasmic Illness Syndrome. Basically, these men get sick after orgasm. Muscle aches, fatigue, brain fog are just a few of the symptoms and they last a week! And if this isn't soul-destroying enough, Prof Waldinger believes it's because they are allergic to their own semen. The experimental treatment being performed on these men in The Netherlands is punishing.

Maryanne goes on a journey with one sufferer who is determined to find out whether he has an allergy to his own semen.

Australia On Trial: The Eureka 13

Thursday, 12 April 2012

In February 1855, the Supreme Court of Victoria is the scene of the historic trial of 13 Eureka rebels. These 'diggers', representing an array of nationalities and races, had come to seek their fortunes on the goldfields of Victoria - now they find themselves charged with ‘making a war against her Gracious Majesty, the Queen of England’. It's an antiquated, arcane charge - treason - that will puzzle jurors and galvanise the colony.

If the 'diggers' are found guilty, they'll be executed - and they're being prosecuted by one of the most powerful men in the colony of Victoria, Attorney General William Stawell, the author of the new Victorian constitution. When the trial begins, Stawell thinks he's suppressing an illegal uprising and foreign agitators, but to his shock, the agitation becomes domestic. Stawell is determined to hang these men as an example and cement his newly written constitution. But he hasn't bargained on the emergence of ‘radical Melbourne’. Whipped into a frenzy by the press, the mood of the people turns to support the rebels in the dock; and the jury of popular opinion is repelled by the antiquated notion of treason.

As the trials of the 13 men unfold, people begin to understand there was no Eureka uprising - just the appearance of a revolt engineered by the authorities in the colony of Victoria. And as blame for the uprising turns on the government - with accusations of its heavy-handedness in managing the goldfields situation - the case against the 'diggers' falls apart most spectacularly. By the time all 13 are acquitted, Stawell's new Victorian constitution has been changed and the people have demanded popular democracy. The events that unfolded during the Eureka trials changed our notions about democracy, our status as a nation and the very notion of justice in Australia.

All The Way

Thursday, 12 April 2012

‘All the Way with LBJ’ was a slogan that came to haunt the Australian Government after it hitched its wagon to America during the Vietnam War.

Taking its name from a part of this catchcry, this frank and poignant documentary shows the war, which became the most hated conflict in Australian history, not only tested Australian soldiers, it stretched Australia's friendship with America to breaking point.

Based on Paul Ham's book Vietnam; The Australian War, and presented by the author, the film claims America's indifference to Australia during the war revealed the truism that governments have no true friends, only interests. It shows why Australia really went to war in Vietnam, why we stayed and the price we paid.

The film includes contemporary footage of Ham in key locations of the Vietnam War, with excusive never-before-seen archival footage and stills from personal and institutional archives in Australia, America and Vietnam.

And it reveals for the first time a brutal Australian expert in guerrilla warfare who trained local Vietnamese to murder thousands of their fellow civilians in his own personal crusade to stop the spread of atheistic Communism.

Former soldiers claim that the American way of fighting there was a ‘bang bang, cowboy culture' of mass bombings and destruction. Australians conducted a more strategic, effective and humane method of warfare, which the Americans considered ‘pussy footing'.

It wasn't only on the battlefield that Australia's difference with America emerged. And it was in the realms of politics and economics that the differences turned cold. America allegedly kept Australia in the dark on major policy shifts and decisions.

New Tricks: Lost In Translation

Saturday, 14 April 2012

Detective Superintendent Sandra Pullman (Amanda Redman) and her unconventional team of ex-detectives are back for a new series. Gerry Standing (Dennis Waterman), Brian Lane (Alun Armstrong) and Jack Halford (James Bolam) may bend the rules, ignore procedure, take risks and follow their hunches, but they get results.

The UCOS (Unsolved Crimes Open Squad) team are drawn into a world of immigration loopholes, Albanian gangs, and family feuds when they reinvestigate the death of an unidentified male whose body was discovered on farmland outside Waltham Forest in 1996.

New DNA tests on the charred remains reveal a family link to Home Office fingerprint analyst Anna King (Lucy Liemann). Anna admits that the victim could be her brother, David Celaj, who brought her to the UK from Albania when she was just seven. They were granted political asylum and Anna was adopted by a British couple, Rachel (Karen Archer) and Alan King (John Bowe), but she hasn't seen her brother since.

The team discovers that Celaj was working as a police interpreter before his death. His last assignment was to translate for a witness, Maria Mullat (Myriam Acharki), testifying in a murder case against Michael Luga (Clive Russell), a notorious Albanian criminal.

Meanwhile, Gerry (Dennis Waterman) immerses himself in all things French on a cookery course, but the language barrier results in a rather surprising date over a bouillabaisse.

Saturday, 14 April 2012 New SeriesRupert Penry-Jones returns as DI Chandler in three dark stories set in London's East End. The killers may be modern, but the crimes have a history all of their own...

Meticulous and obsessional DI Chandler (Rupert Penry-Jones) and hardbitten DS Miles (Phil Davis) are still based in Whitechapel. Ed Buchan (Steve Pemberton) joins the team as their historical advisor - operating out of the bowels of the police station among the musty tomes of the crime archive. Chandler is convinced crimes of the past hold the key to solving murders in the present and it's not long before they have their first case.

In the opening story, four people are slaughtered at night in a heavily fortified tailor's workshop, and the East End is gripped with fear and panic at this seemingly impossible, gruesome crime. Chandler, Miles and the team unearth the history of the Ratcliffe Highway murders. Clearly not a copycat, what can Chandler and Miles learn from history, other than not to repeat the same mistakes?
