IntroIntro I’ve always been a creative person, but I was

never good at drawing. Once I discovered collage, I never looked back.

The most common questions about collage are about where to get the specialty art papers. At the end of this ebook, there is a list of resources.

Send me photos of you work! I will put them on my website. Here’s your chance to share your creations with the world!

Supplies and PrepSupplies and Prep You will need:

– Decorative art papers in shades of blue, green, white, brown (I like lokta paper and thai naturals)

– Canvas or other surface (like a plastic box frame you might have laying around the house)

– Medium and small paint brush, scissors – Acrylic matte medium cut with water (3/4 medium, ¼ water) – Paper towels, small container of water, rag or old towel

To prepare for this project, cover a table with newspaper or an old tablecloth. Freezer paper taped to a cookie sheet works well.

Wear an apron or old clothing.

Step 1: Tear or Cut the Step 1: Tear or Cut the paperpaper

Prep your surface, if you need to. If you are using an old piece of flat wood, for example, you might need to prime it. You want your surface to be white or clear. Any other color will distort the color of the papers.

Tear or cut strips of blue and green papers. Tearing gives a more organic appearance and feel to the art, while cutting gives a more structured feel. To make the tearing process easier, simply “paint” a line of water using your paintbrush, wait a few seconds for the water to absorb into the paper, then tear along the wet line.

You can find lots of decorative art papers on the internet. Some companies offer a sample book of the papers they

sell. This will make it much easier for you to determine the texture of the various papers available.

Step 2: Glue the SkyStep 2: Glue the Sky Begin gluing light blue or white strips of paper onto the top area of your

canvas, to create the sky. Place on strip at a time, overlapping a little bit to add more layering and to cover all gaps. I usually brush the glue onto the paper as opposed to brushing it onto my surface, then brush more onto the top which makes it easier to smooth out.

When creating a landscape, it’s best to work from the top down, because the sky is the furthest thing away from you as you look outside at a landscape in nature.

Step 3: Add the Hills and Step 3: Add the Hills and GrassGrass

Cut or tear some green paper into the shapes of hills if you want to have hills in your collage. Glue the hills to the canvas, working from the back to the front (top, down).

Next, begin gluing the strips of green, until the whole canvas is covered. Be sure to vary the colors, shapes, and sizes of your strips to give it more realistic feel.

Step 4: Add the TreesStep 4: Add the Trees Next, cut some brown paper

into the shape of trees. Use a few different textures and shades of brown to make the trees look more natural.

Then, add the leaves. Use small pieces of green paper, and add some green thread over the paper to give more texture.

Step 5: Final CoatStep 5: Final Coat After the collage has dried, you can coat it

with a thin coat of water-based polyurethane. I like to use gloss, but you can also try a matte finish. Mod Podge also works great!

If you used a plastic box frame, put the cardboard backing back in place so you can hang your artwork on the wall. If you used something else as your canvas, you will need to add a hanger onto the back.

Congratulations, your DONE! Now, wrap your creation and give it as a gift or hang it in your home and enjoy!

But which papers should you buy?? Over the years, I have learned what work best for me by trial and error. But my

favorites are Lokta, Japanese Lace, Mulberry, Thai Mango, and Banana paper.
