Communication

• Talk to your student in advance about what each of your expectations are about when and how often they should call, text, or e-mail.

• Ask your student to give you the cell phone number of a college friend and/or roommate in case of emergency.

• Talk to your students about expectations when school is not in session.

Counseling is not…

• Academic advising.

• Mandatory or used as punishment.

• Advice giving.

• The solution to every problem.

• A quick fix.

Available Services

• Counseling– Individual, group, couples– Generally short-term

• Psychiatric Services– Evaluations – Medication management

• Self-Help Center (SHC)– Empowers students to take charge of their own symptoms– Printed & Online resources available – Relaxation & Meditation selections available– Hours of Operation – same as Walk-In Clinic

Utilization of Services

• Last year approximately 2500 students came in for counseling services last year.

• Students also attended a variety of workshops and other events throughout the year.

• 350 students used psychiatric services.

What we are seeing…

• Social Media

• Self-Injury/suicidality

• Lack of coping resources

• Increase in calls from parents and loved ones

• Parents escorting students to counseling center

• Increased use of psychiatric services

• Increase in requests for stimulant medication (ADHD)

• Increase in requests for medical leave

• Increased hospitalizations

Encourage your student to seek counseling services if …

• You notice a change in mood.

• Their academic performance is poor.

• They are not adjusting well.

• You suspect drug or alcohol problems.

• They are not solving problems.

• You have any other concerns or suspicions that something is wrong.

How to Access Services

• Walk-In Clinic– Available Mon, Tues, Thurs, Fri between 10am-2pm

(check-in by 1:30)– Wednesday & Saturday 9am – 12pm– Free & Confidential– No Appointment Needed– Complete a Brief Assessment on Computer– Meet with a Counselor– Decide on Next Steps

Emergencies• For mental health emergencies that occur during regular

business hours, the following options are available:

• Encourage student to reach out to their Resident Assistant (Temple student) or Resident Director (Temple staff) for support.

• Be willing to listen, slow to react.

• Be supportive, listening, non-judgmental.

• Be a consistent, non-intrusive presence, but listen to your gut.
