    Creating textures using photo resources

    WHATYOUNEED:

    - a camera and/or a collection of photo references in high resolution- basic photoshop knowledge (creating rulers, working with the transform tool)

    1. MOTIVATIONPeople might think that creating environment textures is likepainting a texture for a weapon model or a character. Actually

it is not, because environment textu-res often use a lot of photos. And inthis example we wont use handpaintthat much.Lets get started!

    2. CREATINGTHEBASEBACKGROUNDPick one of your references which contains a wide andclean surface youwant to build yourtexture on. This brick

should work fine forus.Sadly our camerascant take orthogra-phic images so wehave to correct theperspective. You might know this effect, where linesfloat together in the depth, from art class too.To fix this, pull down some rulers from the ruler panelsand drop them some outer edges.

The next step would be transforming the image so its lines lign up with our rulers. Hit ctrl + t toswitch to the transform mode (makesure you are not working in a back-ground layer. If so: ctrl +a -> ctrl + c ->ctrl +v)Hold ctrl while in transform mode tostrech one of the gizmos vertices. Hol-ding alt will do the same manipulationat the opposite vertex. Holding shiftwill make you work snapped on 90rulers. alt + shift will create a combined

transformation between neighboorvertices.Use these features to get your photoligned up correctly.

Now make a quad selection of anarea we can use as a backround forthe texture. Copy and paste it into a

new file.Use the offset filter to make textureborders visible so we can fix them.

Select a small area next to your textureseem and copy paste it into a new layer.

Move it over the seem and switch to theeraser tool. Pick a soft brush so remove theborders of this texture strip.Merge this layer to layer1.

Now the texture tiles in u direction. Letsfix the v direction. Because we are workingwith a brick material it is really easy. Offsetthe image verticaly and we can see theborder clearly.

Select a large part of the texturethat reaches to the top of the tex-tureseem. Use the transform toolto strech the selection over thetexture border (without holdingany shift/ctrl/alt). Press the enterkey or doubleclick the gizmo.Congratulations now you got thebackground material done!

    3. ADDINGVARIATIONSTOTHETEXTUREOpen another image witha window we will integrate

into the background ma-terail. This one should workfine. Now roughly select the win-dow and paste it into ourtexture file. If it is too largedont mind. We have to fixthe perspective anyway, sothe transform tool will helpus twice.

Pull down some rules and lign the up withthe basic lines in the window such as theframes.

Transform the window until it fits using thesame techniques as in step 2.

Now we want to get rid of those unneces-sairy bricks around the window. Pick thepolygon lasso tool and select the window.Invert your selection by pressing shift + f7and delete the bricks from the window layer (you can work with asmask too, but in this case you should not invert the selection :P)To set of the window from the background add a layer dropshadowwith soft settings. Just make it a small soft outline!

If the windowframes brick doesnt match thebackground color open the color balance win-dow (ctrl + b) and correct the colors by adding

    or removing basic colors.

Maybe you think we are done now, but actuallywe are not if we want to make a perfect texture.

As you can see there is still some pers-pective left in our image. The windowand the brick wall have small intersec-tion inbetween. Lets remove it!Select the window that is in the inside

of this perspective error and pasteit into a new layer. Use the transformtool to stretch the window until it co-vers all of those brick-frame-insides.

Maybe you notice that the win-dow looks kind of on top now.Lets add some shadows usinganother layer effect. A big softshadow shall work pretty well.

To give the window its final touch you shouldadd some dirt under those big stone trims.Just create a new layer and paint some grey

green rubbish ;-).Now change the blending mode of the layerto multiply.

After this turn ofthe layers visibilityand color selectthe white spacingsbetween the bricks

(selection -> colorselection). Use theink picker to choosewich color to select.Turn the dirt layers visibility back on and add a mask (while stillhaving the selection). Then deselect (ctrl + d) and invert the mask(ctrl + i) wo bring the dirt onto the bricks.

    4. RESCALINGANDSHARPENINGCongratulations you are done with the

hard stuff! Lets rescale the texture to agame resolution by selecting the wholeimage (ctrl + a) and pasting it into a newfile (ctrl + n -> enter -> ctrl + v).Go to the menu and chose image ->image size. Enter a valid game resolutionsuch as 512x512.

As you are using a bicubic resampling technique the texture might loose opacity at the borders. If you would export the texture now, photoshop would fill it with white. The result: your texturewould tile really badly with white lines at the texture borders. To prevent this copy and paste the layer a few times. When you are done flatten the image (lay-ers -> flatten image).

While rescaling a texture losessharpness. To get it back we willsharpen it with a special technique

that is not creating ugly artefactssuch as the default sharpen filter.Switch to the red color channel inthe channels window. Pick filters ->unsharpen mask and pick a soft set-ting. in this case 100% and a radiusof 1px did work fine. Hit ok!Switch to the green color channeland press ctrl + f to apply the lastfilter effect with the same settings.

Redo this for the blue color chan-nel.

Well done! You have finished this tutorial. I hope you enjoyed it and give mefeedback on my website or by mail.
