LEVEL 1 AND 2 DIPLOMA IN ART & DESIGN THURSDAY 5th JULY 2018 WELCOME SESSION: PART TWO The aim of this session is to introduce you to staff and students, as well as for you to gain a greater understanding of the course that you have applied for within the Creative Industries Department at Greater Brighton Metropolitan College. As part of this session we would like you to get to know your class peers and feel more comfortable and confident about starting college in September. You will receive a presentation about the course and the college which will help you understand a little more about what college life will be like. We will also be looking at your Summer project, view some examples and discuss the theme as a class. You will be required to bring this work in to college during your first session in September and your work will be assessed by both your tutors and peers. There will be an opportunity for you to ask questions about the course and college life itself throughout the session Use this booklet to make any relevant notes and as a reference for ideas and starting points for your summer project. Time Based Media - “Time through a lens” and “Capture this” Drawings
Summer Project
Time Lapse Photography by Dan Marker-Moore
PART 1 Over the summer holiday you are to explore the theme TIME BASED MEDIA through photography and different drawing media. Before you get started you will need to choose a simple subject to record, this could be anything from the list below or something else:
● The contents of either, your wardrobe, a chest of drawers or a cupboard.
● Your reflection within a room. ● Views through doorways ● The view out of your window ● A Journey ● Sunrise/sunset ● Fruit/vegetables going mouldy
Take a photograph of it everyday or maybe every hour depending on the subject matter. It might be the first thing you see when you wake up, the morning sky, a walk, anything you like, but think how each photograph differs each day and how this collectively shows a period of time passing. PART 2 You will need to buy a packet of square ‘post it notes’ and make at least three drawings every day using a broad range of media. You will need to use the bingo sheet to help explore different media: felt tips, biro, charcoal, collage, paint, coloured pencils, oil pastels, ink etc. Using the starting point “Capture this…..” think about the way that each drawing might relate to the next. Is one object next to another in your house? Does it have the same kind of shape? Does every object start with the same letter? You might use these subjects as a useful starting point or devise your own subject, but with all the drawings, work from something three-dimensional, do not copy images from photographs. Make sure you record each drawing on a new post-it note. By the end of the project you should have collectic response to the theme “Capture this….” and “Time through a lens”
