Full STEAM Ahead!
Spring has officially sprung! This is the perfect time to begin enjoying the weather and playing outdoors. This is also a great time to teach children about gardening, and have them plant a vegetable or fruit and watch it grow! Gardening is a great way to show children where food comes from and also allows them to spend quality time outdoors. Here are some tips on how to successfully grow a plant and how to get your children involved:
Some easy vegetables and fruits to grow are: strawberries, grape tomatoes, sugar snap peas or pumpkins.
Find a sunny place to plant your plant.
Grow plants in either a pot or in soil in the yard.
Have the child help you water and tend to the plant.
Have the child observe the plant all throughout the growing process.
Show the child when it is time to pick the vegetable or fruit.
Have the child be involved with making a meal with the vegetable or fruit they helped grow!

Raising Readers Parent Club
Seven consecutive Fridays beginning June 9, 2017.
10:00am-Noon
It’s that time of they ear again when we ofer one of our most popular programs. Raising Readers is a
literacy program aimed at encouraging parents to read to their children on a daily basis. The pro-
gram will run for 7 consecutive Fridays, and focuses on themes that are important in children's liter-
ature. Every participant will receive a new children's picture book each week, and those who attend
6 out 7 sessions will receive a “bonus” book, at the end of the program.
This year, the book selection is geared to children 3-5 years of age. The first hour of the program
will be for the parents alone (a play group for your child will be provided), and the second hour will
consist of parent-child activities that are based upon the theme of that week’s book.

From the magazine: TIME for Kids Memorial Day
Technically, summer doesn't start until June 20. But many people consider Memorial Day to be the unofficial start of the season. This year, we celebrate the holiday on May 29th. Many families will heat up the grill, head to the beach or take in a big blockbuster movie. But Me-morial Day has the word "memorial" in it for a reason. The holiday got started on May 30, 1868, when Union General John A. Logan declared the day an occasion to decorate the graves of Civil War soldiers. Twenty years later, the name was changed to Memorial Day. Presi-dent Richard M. Nixon declared Memorial Day a federal holiday in 1971. Memorial Day is now observed on the last Monday of May. It is an occasion to honor the men and women who died in all wars. Remembering Those Who Served It is customary to mark Memorial Day by visiting graveyards and war monuments. One of the biggest Me-morial Day traditions is for the President or Vice Presi-dent to give a speech and lay a wreath on soldiers' graves in the largest national cemetery, Arlington Na-tional Cemetery, in Virginia. Most towns have local Me-morial Day celebrations. Here are some ways you can honor the men and women who serve our country: - Put flags or flowers on the graves of men and women who served in wars. - Fly the U.S. flag at half-staff until noon. - Visit monuments dedicated to soldiers, sailors and ma-rines. - Participate in a National Moment of Remembrance at 3 p.m. local time. - March in a parade.
