“Solar PV, probably the best tax-free investment

available today.”

SUN RENEWABLES Ltd

WHY SHARP SOLAR? Experience, Reliability and Innovation Half a century ago, in 1959, Sharp began their

development of solar PV cells. As a manufacturer of

products that consume electricity, they took the view

that it was their responsibility to sustainably create

electricity as well. They were pioneers in realizing

the potential of solar energy and have continued to

develop it ever since. From lighthouses, to space

satellites to mega solar power plants, Sharp has

been providing reliable solar solutions to help free

the world from carbon dependency.

As the world leader, nobody is able to provide a

better solar solution than Sharp.

Britain’s future has never been brighter, because Sharp

has enhanced the efficiency of solar power systems to

make them viable even in cloudier climates such as

ours. The important thing to bear in mind is that solar

power generation depends on intensity of light, not nec-

essarily direct sunlight.

On a clear day, solar energy of about one kilowatt per

square meter reaches Earth’s surface. A single hour of

solar energy reaching the Earth would be enough to

supply the world’s current energy needs for an entire

year. Harnessing this energy produces no CO2

emissions.

SHARP Solar Modules: MADE IN THE UK

One of Sharp’s most technically advanced solar PV

module manufacturing plants is located in Wrexham

(north Wales); this, their first European solar PV plant,

is a state-of-the-art facility, manufacturing solar PV

modules since 2004.

Today it assembles Sharp’s latest highly advanced

solar PV modules. These are not only supplied to the

UK market but are also exported throughout continen-

tal Europe, where there is a growing demand for the

efficient solar PV technology offered by Sharp.

Sharp have made massive investments in their UK

factory. Capacity has recently reached 8800 panels

(approximately 2.2MW) per day produced by their 550

employees.

One in every four solar PV panels now installed in the

world is made by Sharp. Global benchmarks for quality

are set by the standards of Sharp Solar. Continual

checks guarantee consistently high levels of quality.

Every Sharp PV module undergoes visual, mechanical

and electrical inspections.

Sharp now has the highest performance specification in

the industry and powers more homes and businesses

than any other manufacturer. All Sharp solar PV panels

are covered by a 25-year guarantee.

The photovoltaic effect is the conversion of sunlight into electrical power. It is a process which involves the re-lease of positive and negative particles as a result of the introduction of light into solar cells. The electrical circuit is produced by a grid of solar cells connected in series within the solar PV modules. The consequent physical reaction in the solar cells then gen-erates direct current, which can be converted to alter-nating current, depending on requirements. As the PV modules that perform this function have no moving parts, the system requires only minimal mainte-nance and is silent in operation. Best of all, they gener-ate electricity without generating any of the harmful emissions currently threatening our environment and climate.

The sun delivers over 219,000 billion kilowatt hours of energy every year to the earth; over 2,500 times more than the total world population currently requires.

Photovoltaics: using science to unlock the power of the sun

Greener homes, greener future

1. The PV array is installed in the best location to maximise the power output, for example in a residential installation on the roof. The PV mod-ules which make up the array are connected in series to supply a direct current.

2. This direct current is then converted to alternat-ing current at grid rating by the inverter. Each kWp capacity installed in the UK will generate, on average, 800kWh per annum (varies de-pending on orientation and location).

3. This AC generated by your PV system is con-nected into the main distribution box for the building.

4. Here it uses the same electricity that would have been drawn from the grid. In times when you are producing more than you are using, any excess is fed back to the grid, while excess de-mand is topped up by drawing from the grid as usual.

5. The electricity meter will thus show the net elec-tricity exported or imported to or from the na-tional grid by the property. The power to reduce your carbon footprint

Solar PV systems qualify for the government’s FIT, or

Clean Energy Cash Back scheme, which guarantees a

minimum payment for 25 years from the energy supplier

to the householder for each unit (or kWh) of electricity

generated by the system, as well as a separate pay-

ment for electricity exported to the grid.

The FIT is designed so that the average monthly in-

come from your installation will be significantly greater

than any monthly loan repayment, and will cover the

purchase price of the system within an average of 6.5

to 9 years. Good for the environment, good for your

bank account.

The Feed-in Tariff is working well in Britain.

Since its introduction in April 2010, many people are

now taking advantage of the guaranteed income availa-

ble from producing their own solar electricity.

There are three ways in which the FIT works:

Scale Generation Tariff p/kWh Duration – years

≤ 4kW new build 37.8 25

≤ 4kW retro fit 43.3 25

> 4 ≤ 10 kW 37.8 25

> 10 ≤ 50 kW 32.9 25

Feed-in Tariff (Great Britain)

Average Figures for a 3.76kWp PV system

Energy produced: 2957 kWh

% of average consumption: 83%

Feed-in Tariff: £1230

Electricity saved: £177

Electricity Exported: £44

CO2 saved: 2.6 tonnes N.B. Figures based on August 2011 data.

Source: http://www.energysavingtrust.org.uk/ Feed-in Tariff Scheme August 2011.

1. Every unit of electricity you produce by a ‘green

means’ earns you money, whether that electricity is

used or not. The FIT rate at which you join the

scheme is guaranteed for 25 years, plus the tariffs

are index linked to inflation (RPI-retail price in-

dexed) and will increase in line with that.

2. In addition to the tariff paid for all the electricity you

produce, any excess produced is exported to the

grid and an additional tariff of 3.2p/kWh extra is

paid.

3. You will greatly reduce your electricity bills by using

most or all of the electricity you have produced ra-

ther than importing from the grid.

The tariff a customer will receive is dependent on the

type & size of installation. The tariff is banded as below.

PV panels are only one component in powering a home

with solar electricity. PV panels generate direct current

(DC); while the national grid utilises alternating current

(AC). The essential piece of equipment to ensure com-

patibility with the grid, and to optimize the amount of

power harvested from the PV panels, is the

photovoltaic inverter.

Sun Renewables offers a range of inverters to meet the

needs of a wide variety of installations. We will select

the inverter that is best suited to your particular applica-

tion, based on a number of considerations specific to

your site’s PV array:

Orientation

Number of roofs

Shade

Number of panels connected in series, etc.

We use only top-of-the-range technology from leading

inverter manufacturers: SMA, Power-One, Diehl,

Fronius and SolarEdge.

Two names which stand out from the others are

Power-One and Fronius.

Power-One Aurora™ The Aurora™ features multiple power-point trackers

(MPPT) to accommodate sub arrays with different orien-

tations and any string size of panels.

SUN RENEWABLES Ltd

Glossary of Terms

AC — Alternating current. This is the form of electricity supplied through the grid to homes and businesses. DC — Direct current (a battery for example). The raw output from a PV module. FIT — Feed-in-tariff (clean energy cash back). Incentive to encourage small-scale electricity production. Grid — The distribution network that delivers electricity throughout the country. Inverter — A device that converts direct current elec-tricity to alternating current either for stand-alone sys-tems or to supply power to an electricity grid. Irradiation — The amount of energy radiating from the sun. This varies depending on where you are and typi-cally assumes a 30% angle for a PV module: the fur-ther south in the UK, the higher the irradiation. Units are shown as kWh per kWp per annum. Isolation Switch — A device to disconnect the modules from the inverter during maintenance, etc. Kilowatt (kW) — A standard unit of electrical power equal to 1000 watts, or to the energy consumption at a rate of 1000 joules per second. Kilowatt-Hour (kWh) — One thousand watts (1,000w) acting over a period of one hour. The kWh is a unit of energy. 1 kWh = 3600 kJ. kWp (kilo watt peak) —The unit used to specify the output from a PV panel under standard conditions. MCS — Microgeneration Certification Scheme. All solar PV system components and installers must be MCS certified to qualify for FIT payment for domestic sys-tems. PV — Photovoltaic. The direct conversion of sunlight into electrical power.

Photovoltaic (PV) Array — An interconnected system of PV modules that function as a single electricity-producing unit. The PV modules are assembled as a separate structure, with common support or mounting. In smaller systems, an array can consist of a single module. REAL Assurance Scheme — The scheme was set up by the Renewable Energy Association Limited to guar-antee a high quality experience for consumers wishing to buy or lease small-scale energy generation systems for their homes.

Solar Cell — The building block of a PV module, typi-cally made from silicon. Solar Energy — The electromagnetic energy transmit-ted from the sun (solar radiation). The amount that reaches the earth is equal to one billionth of total solar energy generated, or the equivalent of about 420 trillion kilowatt-hours. String — A number of photovoltaic modules (that is, PV panels) interconnected electrically in series to produce the operating voltage required. Stand-Alone System — An autonomous or hybrid pho-tovoltaic system not connected to a grid which may or may not have storage. However, most stand-alone sys-tems require batteries or some other similar form of storage. Tracking Array — A photovoltaic (PV) array that fol-lows the path of the sun to maximize the solar radiation on the PV surface. The two most common orientations are: 1) single axis where the array tracks the sun east to west; and 2) double axis tracking where the array points directly at the sun at all times. Tracking arrays use both direct and diffuse sunlight. Two-axis tracking arrays capture the maximum possible daily energy. W Watt—Unit of power.
