AT THE BEGInInGTurkish Geographical Society
In June 1941, Turkish Ministry of Education has been pioneered to the gathering of first Geography Congress by taking decisions of founding Turkish Geographical Society in Turkey.
Turkish Geographical Society has become a non gov- ernmental organization by the decision given by the Council of Ministers.
Between the years of 1943-1988, the headquarter of Turkish Geographical Society was in Ankara, but since 1988, the headquarter is in İstanbul.
The Main Goal of the Society
To promote and improve the endeavors of geography in Turkey, other places and anthrogeography and an- alyzing Turkey’s geographical surveys with scientific methods and following the earths geographical movements and improvements.
Turkish Geographical Review
In 1943, the first edition of Turkish Geographical Review was published, and in 2008, its 49th edition published.
Turkish Geographical Review has also been serving at the internet site with the address of www.tcd.org.tr even if by publishing its 50th edition.
By publishing twice a year ( June and December) and it has been granted the status of national reference magazine, its 54th edition has been published in 2010 July.
Especially, Academicians, partly Geography teach- ers and different geographical scientific researcher papers have given an important status to the said society by publishing its magazines.

Example Facilities of the Society
In 29th Occupational Geography Week, South
Marmara Region (locational problem and so- lutions)
meeting has been accomplished by heading and
editing of Prof. Dr. Suna Doganer in Çanakkale on 17-
19 May 2001. In this context, one announce- ment
about this meeting has been published.
Scientific congress held in memory of our
Association’s sixth president (Prof.Dr. Ismail
YALÇINLAR) and a geography congress was held in
İstanbul called National Geographic Congress 2005.
Announcement book of the congress published as
of 724 pages.
Geography Teachers Workshop in September 2010
was held with the participation of 100 teachers and
supported by the National Education Management
of Tokat province by the organiz ing of at the
Gaziosmanpaşa University, Faculty of Education
with presentations of academicians and geography
teachers. Second day, a fieldwork was made along
the Kelkit River.
Field Trip: Geography teachers and environmentalists
field trip was held by Mehmet Zor and Ahmet Ertek
and their team of 47 people during 6 days in the
Mediterranean and Southeastern Anatolia, passing
3500 kilometers. Geography Teachers Field Trip 2009
was held by Dr. Ahmet Ertek and his team of 40
people during 14 days in the Internal and Western
Anatolian, passing 5000 km.
India and Nepal Overland 2010, headed by
Geography Teacher Fügen DEDE and her team of
4 members was completed successfully with in 36
days, passing two countries of Asia.
After the Last General Meeting of the Society in January 2010.
Within Three Years Plan:• At the fall of 2011, celebrating of founding
70th Anniversary of the Society to organize a big an International broad participation Geography Congress,
• To make an International High School Geography Projects Competition among students,
• To arrange intermediate and advance level Geographic Information System seminars,
• To prepare International Scientific Projects, Workshops, Seminars and to arrange conferences,
• In Homeland (Internal and East Anatolian Fieldwork, Blacksea Region Fieldwork) in Abroad (İstanbul- Akabe Overland, South America Overland, Central America Overland, South East Asia Overland) to make field trips and geographical excursions,
• Where meets the continents and connects other world geographic locations.

2nd Activity: TGS Administrative Board decided Turkish Geographical Journal
(www.tcd.org.tr) Editorial Board which consists of Professor Sedat Avcı (Editor), Professor Dr. Barbaros Gönençgil (Member) and Assistant Pofessor T. Ahmet Ertek (Member) to continue their dutie one more year.
3rd Activity: We had chance to announce our 2009 Annual Report to the world by
sending it to IGU. We published this report in our web site
4th Activity: Our society was invited to the “Geography Postgraduate Seminar” which
was organized by Ege University Faculty of Arts, Division of Geography. Postgraduate students and research assistants organized the seminar at the faculty’s Conference Hall on 27th April 2010 and president of the society Ahmet Ertek made speeches in both opening and closing.
5th Activity: A common press release of Turkish Geographical Society (TGS) – Turkish
Environmental and Woodlands Protection Society (TÜRÇEK) presidents notified to the news agencies about Eyyafyallajokul Volcano which began to operate in Iceland on 29th April 2010. This notification published in near 50 internet sites and the society’s web site.
6th Activity: Our society prepared the society’s English introduction
brochures with the support of ZED Event Management&Consultancy, main supporter of our 2011 national congress, 2012 IGU World Congress and IGU world 2020 candidate city activities.

Tel Aviv – İsrail IGU President Ronald Abler and TGS President Ahmet Ertek’s meeting at 2010 Regional Geography Congress in Tel Aviv (14th July 2010)
9 th Activity: Turkish Geographical Society President Ahmet Ertek and Vice President
Barbaros Gönençgil attended to the “Regional
Geography Congress” organized in Tel-Aviv, Israel
on 12-16 July 2010. The congress lasted for 5
days and achieved in 33 commisssions and 11
seperate meeting rooms. During the congress,
there was a chance to meet IGU (International
Geographical Union) President Prof. Dr. Ronald
Abler. During this conversation required
document about Turkish Geographical Society’s
“2020 International Geography Congress”
candidacy delivered to him. In the closing
session in stead of many speeches, TGS President
Ertek made a presentation about the society and
Istanbul on 16th July 2010.

10th Activity: Our society attended to the International Geography Olympiad which was done in highschool level between dates 28th July-4th August 2010 in Taipei, Taiwan. With the efforts of
our society Vice President Barbaros Gönençgil, our society represented in observer level.

13th Activity: Geography Teacher’s Workshop named “New Approaches and New Information in Geography Workshop” which was coordinated by our member Associate Professor Eren
YÜRÜDÜR happened with cooperation of Tokat-Gaziosmanpaşa University, Turkish Geographical Society and Tokat National Education Director of Province at Tokat-Gaziosmanpaşa University between dates 17-18 September 2010. On the first day,opening speeches made with participation of 100 geography teachers who work in Tokat and presentations made by 6 lecturer from 4 seperate universities in the conference hall. On the second day, a geographical trip achieved with all participants in the Kelkit Valley.

14th Activity: Our society was invited to “National Geomorphology Symposium-2010”which was in honour of Prof. Dr. Oğuz Erol between dates 11-12 October 2010 at Afyon-Kocatepe
University. One of the opening speeches was made by our society president Assistant Professor Ahmet Ertek.
15th Activity: Our society attended to “6th National Geography Symposium” at
Ankara University Faculty of Languages, History and Geography between dates 3-5 November 2010. On the last day of the symposium, our society was introduced and its activities explained in the “Turkish Geographical Society Session”. Introduction and presentation was made by society’s Vice President Professor Dr. Barbaros Gönençgil.

17 th Activity: The workouts on “Turkish Geographical Society History” is sustaining with A.Ertek, with presidency of our Board of Directors Member Faruk Özbakan. On this issue, data was
collected by visiting libraries and associations. Workouts are proceeding. Furthermore, the society’s former lecturer presidents (Professor Süha Göney and Professor Metin Tuncel) were visited about this workout.
18rd Activity: Our Board of Directors Members Barbaros Gönençgil, Fügen Dede and Mesut Süzer are sustaining their work about “International Geography Olympiad ” which is organized

22th Activity: Connected with IGU, the preperations
about bringing and organizing “2020 International Geographical Congress” in Turkey are sustaining, with contributions of our society. About this issue, it is decided to organize a congress named “International Participated Geographical Congress-2011” in İstanbul University between dates 7-10 September 2011, on remembrance of Turkish Geographical Society’s 70th anniversary.
