WELCOMEDear Colleague,

It is a great pleasure for us to host the 16th European Turbulence Conference aga-in at KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm. KTH is one of Europe’s le-ading technical and engineering universities and also a leader in technical research in Sweden. The 3rd European Turbulence Conference was organized at the same location in 1990. KTH’s strong tradition in transition and turbulence research began in the department of Mechanics under the leadership of Mårten Landahl some 50 years ago. Today, the research at KTH in fluid mechanics and turbulence in particu-lar spans a broad range of topics under the umbrella of the Linné Flow Centre.

Nearly 700 abstracts have been submitted to the conference, by researchers from all over the world. Each abstract has been reviewed by three members of the scien-tific and local organizing committees and 502 papers were selected for oral presen-tation at the conference. Combined with seven invited speakers this will guarantee a very interesting and lively conference that will cover a broad range of current topics in turbulence research. Nearly 50% of the participants are younger than 35 years (and thus eligible for the Euromech Young Scientist prize). The relatively low average age of the participants is a good indication for the viability of the turbulen-ce research worldwide.

Besides the scientific program, we have organized three social events: a welcome reception at KTH on Monday August 21st, a conference reception at the City Hall of Stockholm on Tuesday August 22nd, and finally a conference dinner in the famous Vasa Museum in Stockholm on Wednesday August 23rd. The ETC16 Crew, which consists of 16 PhD students in fluid mechanics, will be available during the confe-rence to assist you in both technical and practical matters.

Welcome to ETC16!

On behalf of the Euromech Committee for the Euromech European Turbulen-ce Conference I welcome you to the 16th European Turbulence Conference. With this conference we return to Stockholm, where ETC3 already took place in 1990. We are thankful to the KTH Stockholm and Dan Henningson and his team to host this event and for all their hard work in preparation of the conference. Over the years the Euromech European Turbulence Conference has grown to the most visible and prominent place to present results and developments in the research on turbulence, next to the Meetings of the Division of Fluid Dyna-mics of the American Physical Society. We are happy to welcome over 500 parti-cipants from more than 18 countries all over the world, and are looking forward to the 452 oral presentations and of course the 7 keynote lectures.

We wish you a stimulating, fruitful, and productive conference, with lots of sci-entific exchange with your colleagues from all over the world.

Detlef Lohse Chairman of the Euromech Committee for the European Turbulence Conference

Thanks to the support of E-CAero2, this conference holds a special joint EURO-MECH – ERCOFTAC session on Instability and Transition. We thank the ETC sci-entific committee as well as the local organising committee for reviewing all the submitted abstracts. In particular, we are grateful to Ricardo Vinuesa, Enrico Ri-naldi and Sudhakar Yogaraj for helping us organising ETC16 and Malin Landin and Cecilia Ljunglöf for taking care of all the practical arrangements. We hope that you will enjoy a very fruitful and enjoyable confe-rence stay in Stockholm.

In 2010 he became an associate professor at KTH, with special interest in large-scale simulations of turbulent flows, mainly in wall-bounded configurations. In 2014 he was chosen as a Wallenberg Academy Fellow, a prestigious programme with 5 year funding for performing simulations of turbulence and control on airpla-ne wings. He is currently the director of the Linné FLOW Centre at KTH Stock-holm, leading the fluid-dynamics community in the Swedish e-Science Resear-ch Centre, and member of the Swedish National Committee of Mechanics, and the Swedish National Allocation Committee for distribution of computer time. His current research involves both large-scale simulations based on highly ac-curate spectral and spectral-element methods, but also close interaction to ex-perimentalists in an effort to cross-validate simulation and experimental data.
