“This morning Mark Brady and I accompanied Natacha'smother Mrs. Delia Stirling, her brother Walter Chandler,and two aunts, Sheila Rose and Anya Borda, to the UnsungHero Award Ceremony held at the Baird Auditorium.Natacha was one of the 25 heroes honored for theircontribution to the Smithsonian. The event was solemnand festive at the same time. It began with the presentationof the Smithsonian Colors and a clipping from the videoAmerica's Smithsonian. Each hero was called up to thestage and was congratulated by secretary Small, deputysecretary Sheila Burke, and undersecretaries David Evansand Ned Rifkin. An announcer read their personalachievements. With Natacha's smiling photo in thebackground, secretary Small himself made a brief statement of Natacha's achievements and askedher mother to receive the award on her behalf. The Secretary then unveiled the plaque with thenames of Unsung Heroes from 1988 onwards that rests in the National Museum of NaturalHistory. NMNH director Cristián Samper and Adriana Casas were present in the audience. Afterthe ceremony secretary Small spoke to Natacha's family and the group attended a reception for theheroes and their guests in the Natural History Museum's Executive Conference Room.” STRI hasestablished a fund in memory of STRI’s former attorney Natacha Chandler, for the education ofher children. Four new species of Pacifigorgia coralsdiscovered from Pacific PanamaSTRI staff scientist Hector M. Guzman and collaborator Odalisca Breedy from the University ofCosta Rica published a new article in Zootaxa (vol 541: 1-15) featuring newly discovered species ofcoral and their geographical distribution along the Pacific coast of Panama, inside Coiba NationalPark and the Gulf of Chiriquí. One of the new species Pacifigorgia smithsoniana was named in honorof STRI for decades of support to basic research in tropical marine coastal ecosystems.

This very successful event,organized by SI Libraries and STRI chief librarianVielka Chang-Yau, gathered librarians from Panama's

National Library, libraries at the University of Panama, Technological University, INAC, theNational Archives, IFARHU, etc. The workshop included a talk on “Small Book Repair.”

STRI and Panama’s Authority for the Environment (ANAM)organized a celebration of Environmental Day at Galeta, onSaturday, June 5. More than 100 people including governmentalofficials and STRI staff attended the event that included anintroduction to the educational programs carried out by STRI inthe area by Argelis Ruíz, and the importance of protecting thepopulations of the blue crab that resides in Colon’s mangroves,by Benjamín Ordóñez.
