EDUCATION

Tulsa Symphony education initiatives foster, inspire and enrich a lifelong relationship with music among people of all ages. Each season we bring K-8 students to Chapman Music Hall for our Young People’s Concerts where they enjoy the life-changing cultural experience of a live symphony orchestra. Our Education Ensembles and Education Around Town programs go out into the community to realize the interconnections of art and life. We offer various Special Programs to ensure students of all ages have the opportunity to be touched by live music and our Summer Music programs keep the inspiration alive even when the symphony is not in season. We are proud to be Tulsa’s professional symphony orchestra that educates, entertains, inspires and distinguishes our community through musical excellence, innovation and service.

Education THAT MOVES

Young People’s Concerts Elementary and middle school students and teachers from across the region have the irreplaceable cultural experience of attending a live concert by Tulsa’s premiere professional orchestra in the grandeur of Tulsa Performing Arts Center’s Chapman Hall. Each school that registers to attend these concerts receives a study guide that includes cross-curricular lesson plans, music preparation activities, and a CD of works that will be performed live onstage: Introduction to the Orchestra (K-2)

Elementary students have the opportunity to take part in the Tulsa premiere of this exciting new program. Our Introduction to the Orchestra program brings students to downtown Tulsa to experience the splendor of a live symphony orchestra concert in the TSO’s home, Chapman Hall of the Tulsa PAC. Study guides for this program include lesson plans that draw connections between diverse Oklahoma Academic Standards for K-2 elementary students and for learning about the symphony orchestra, concert attendance and concert etiquette.

Any Given Child - “Awesome Events”

In May, the TSO continues as a partnering member of the Kennedy Center’s arts initiative Any Given Child. All eighth-grade Tulsa Public School students will join guest conductor Ron Spigelman and the TSO in Chapman Hall for the concert “Awesome Events.” This program leads students to connect AWESOME events from across history to AWESOME orchestral music. Every TPS eighth-grade program receives a visit from one of TSO’s Education Ensembles in their school and an Awesome Events study guide that includes lesson plans with Oklahoma Academic Standards-specific content for science, mathematics, social studies, English language arts, world languages and music.

Education Ensembles TSO is proud to partner with the Arts & Humanities Council of Tulsa through the Artists-in-the-Schools program and the Harwelden Institute. Serving more than 154 schools and 65,000 students in the region, these programs offer enhanced cultural experiences that integrate with school curricula to help develop well-rounded, creative children. Each season TSO sends various chamber ensembles into the schools to present engaging cross-curricular programs that illuminate connections between core curriculum studies and the arts. TSO currently offers the following programs:

“Sound of Science” Learn about the string family of the orchestra while seeing and hearing how sound is produced, and the various ways it is manipulated to make music. The TSO String Quartet demonstrates the violin, viola, and cello; explains how string vibration relates to sound waves; and illustrates the effect of combing these sounds into harmonic textures. “Brushstrokes” This program demonstrates that music listening is a creative activity. The TSO String Quartet performs various works for students and leads them in interactive discussions to demonstrate music’s ability to conjure imagery.

Students learn that in music, sound is organized to inspire a listener’s imagination.

“Music and Drama” Students explore various ways music is used to enhance story-telling in a variety of contexts, from opera and movies, to patriotic celebrations and dance. The TSO Brass Quintet performs music from the past and present demonstrating music’s ability to

stir emotions and tell stories, while students learn about the trumpet, trombone, horn, and tuba.

“What is Music?” We hear music everyday, but what exactly is it? In this program the TSO Wind Quintet leads students to uncover the elements of a musical sound. In addition to learning about the wind instruments individually, the instruments combine to show

students how rhythm, pitch, dynamics, and timbre make up the patterns we recognize as music.

“Where is Music?” The arts are so integrated within our world we often do not notice just how much they are a part of our everyday experiences. For example, if you drive through downtown Tulsa and look up, you might notice our city has a specific feel. Without its rich art deco tradition Tulsa would not be the same. If we open our ears in the same way, we realize music is every bit as pervasive and influential in our world as architecture and other arts. In this program the TSO Wind Quintet leads students on an exploration of

the various ways music is used in our world.

Education Around Town Throughout each season the TSO ventures out from its home in Chapman Music Hall at the Tulsa PAC to collaborate with various organizations and schools to offer unique and engaging learning experiences for Oklahoma students: Symphony by the Sea

TSO brass, woodwind and string ensembles provide one week of performances at the Oklahoma Aquarium for more than 1,000 elementary school students. Performances are held among the exhibits, with fish as the backdrop, while aquarium staff members teach about marine wildlife.

Carnival of the Animals

TSO developed this exciting educational collaboration to enhance and enrich the elementary school curriculum through writing, drawing and music. Teachers and students study the original Ogden Nash text and Saint-Saens’ music for Carnival of the Animals. Then they prepare their own original poetry and artwork to accompany the score, which is performed for them live by the TSO.

We have an alternate version of this program in collaboration with Joann McMillan and her eye-catching, interactive puppets, that focuses on younger audiences and their families. For this version of program the TSO presents original bi-lingual (Spanish-English) riddle poetry that has young children and there families interact with the music and puppets to guess the animals of the Carnival as they are presented in performance.

Strings Programs

Teaching Artists from the TSO are active in various schools throughout the metro to support existing in-school music programs and to provide music programs in schools where they otherwise do not exist. Current partner schools include:

Marquette Catholic School

Educare, Kendall-Whittier

Deborah Brown School

Edison High School

Special Programs TSO engages in a variety of programs that ensure students of all ages and from across the region benefit from having a professional orchestra right here in Tulsa: Rosa Parks Early Childhood Music Exploration Program

TSO teams up with the Rosa Parks Early Childhood Development Center to provide musical exposure to 3-year-olds. According to Principal Lynn McClure, "Both music and movement have natural connections to the content areas your child is studying, which includes literacy, math, science, social studies, and the arts.” TSO musicians provide Hallway Musical Explorations, Naptime Serenades, Playground Performances, and Carpool Performances.

Harmony Project

TSO’s El Sistema-inspired program, Harmony Project Tulsa, provides instrumental instruction in a carefully designed, socially supportive environment that involves parents and the surrounding neighborhood. More than a means to music education, Harmony Project Tulsa is a tool for child/family development and social change. The pilot program for HPT launched at Kendall Whittier Elementary in January 2014.

Guest Artist Masterclasses

Tulsa Symphony Classics Series concerts frequently feature soloists and we are pleased to provide the opportunity for college and advanced high school students to perform and attend masterclasses by these noted artists in a variety of locations in the days leading up to the Chapman Hall performances.

Conductor Lectures

The many conductors that grace the TSO podium bring a wealth of insight and experience with them, and TSO Education offers area schools and organizations the opportunity to hear these artists speak while they are in Tulsa. In addition, each Classics Series performance is preceded by a conversation with the conductor at 6:30 p.m. in the Westby Pavilion of the Tulsa Performing Arts Center and is hosted by Arts & Humanities Council Executive Director Ken Busby.

Recognition Concerts

TSO celebrates each season with the dedicated music teachers of Oklahoma whose talent, devotion, and dedication enhance our region, inspire our youth, and perpetuate Tulsa’s rich musical legacy. Before each of our Classics Series concerts a distinguished education program from the region is invited to present a recital in the LaFortune Room of the Tulsa PAC. All students, music teachers, administrators, and board members for that organization are recognized in the Intermission program and receive complimentary tickets to that evening’s Classics Series performance.

Student Tickets

We strive to make live concert experiences possible for everyone and offer reduced pricing to encourage students to attend. Starting two hours before each concert students (through college-aged, with a valid ID) can purchase $10 tickets at the Tulsa PAC Box Office.

Attended Dress Rehearsals

A limited number of seats are available for high school and college students to attend Classics Series dress rehearsals (usually Saturday 10:00 a.m.-12:30 p.m.) in Chapman Music Hall.

Summer Music TSO recognizes the need for learning to continue even when the orchestra season is done each year. We offer various summer music programs to support student learning and cultural experiences year-round: Arts Around the World Students ages 7-13 join the Tulsa Symphony, Tulsa Ballet, and Tulsa Opera for one week to explore and experience first-hand the various creative activities of Tulsa’s premiere music and dance organizations.

Fiddle Camp This annual event helps students continue developing their musicianship when school is not in session. Students work with TSO Teaching Artists to learn and perform diverse styles of music including classical, rock, jazz, fiddle tunes and more! This program is open to students ages 5-19.

Bassoon Camp Students of all ages and from across the country come together each summer for the opportunity to study all facets of bassoon playing with TSO Teaching Artists and to perform with the Barking Bassett Bassoon Band!
