Voordat aangekoopte jong bulle by die koeie geplaas word, moet seker gemaak word dat hul rumens by veldweiding aangepas is, veral as hul ’n volvoer-rantsoen ontvang het. Verskaf ’n produksielek teen 2.5 kg/bul/dag.

Day 2: Thursday, 15 August 2013 - Action packed day
A lot of people visited the stand.
The body condition was excellent considering the fact that animals were from the veld and never prepare for the show, especially this time of the year. We used this as a marketing statement throughout the show when one compared to other breeds that were very fat showing clearly that they have been fed in preparation for the show. Visitors were happy with the body condition of both the Bull and the cow. The animals were 4 years Old. The brand mark was neat and clear on animals skin.
We arrived in time to check everything is still in order, our Pamphlets, Journals and Catalogues.
Visitors came in and attracted by the set up and the solid colour of our cattle. Questions raised were about the History, Adaptation, and difference from other breeds. Key point used in answering was the fact that Tuli were historically and still are bred for meat and milk production.
Some visitors were interested in where are they most concentrated in terms of breeder participation, these kind of questions were answered easily by referring to one of the Tuli characteristics, which wide adaptation and therefore Tuli breeders are widely distributed, of cause with lack of penetration in some areas because of the size of the society. All questions were answered well and clear. Pamphlets for forthcoming Tuli Auctions were handed out and some visitors signed the register. Our table was also advertising Tuli clothing, the logo on clothing was attracting and strong, visitors liked them but they had no money, instead they asked where to get them. Very few orders were placed.
Friday, 16 August 2013
It was a normal day with less visitors attending, few of them were interested.
We managed to network with potential clients for business and they were looking forward to Auction day on the 10th September 2013 in Bela Bela
Saturday, 17 August 2013 – Breaking down day
Expo coming to the wrap.
A lot more visits made their way to the stand with lots of interest.
We started breaking down the stand at 10h30, we loaded the cattle and the truck left at 11h00, The rush was because of the Nelson Mandel Sport and Culture Day held at the FNB Stadium, therefore this was a short day with few visitors who also attended workshops within the Expo. The closing time was at 13:00pm.

dairying but in spite of a lifetime spent not dairying he still wakes at 4.00 am.
His first post in the then Southern Rhodesia was at Matopos, just outside Bulawayo. There he was a farm manager responsible for preparation and cultivation of fields for seed trials. He was then posted to Lupane as a

Jack Steele was posted to the Tuli Breeding Station in the mid 1960s to assist Len Harvey. I have spent two interesting mornings poring over old photos and hearing the story Jack has to tell.
Jack was born near Thornhill, Port Elizabeth on a dairy farm. As a young man he vowed and declared he would not go
51TULI joernaal 2014 journal
the temperature wore a light cardigan and a well used hat that bore the dust and sweat of many years. The Farmers’ Weekly would regularly arrive at the station in the post and after reading it Len would had it to Jack saying “Read and inwardly digest!”
When Jack came to Tuli, Sputnik and Sergeant were the two premier sires. Sputnik was Len’s favourite, a light coloured bull with tremendous length of body. Sergeant, Jack’s favourite, was reddish in colour and was a more closely coupled bull with good muscling. The reason Len preferred Sputnik was due to a fine pedigree whereas Sergeant‘s relatives were not as illustrious. Sergeant went on to be paraded through Bulawayo when the Tuli breed gained the Freedom of the City.
As the “new boy” the task of euthanizing Guyu fell to Jack. Guyu is acknowledged as the animal that had the greatest influence on the Tuli breed. He was born in 1950 in the dry bed of the Guyu Creek, a minor tributary of the Tuli River, hence his name . Guyu and at least seven of his sons were used over the years at the breed station. Eventually this herd bore his name as a testament to his influence. When the time came for Guyu to be euthanized, a large hole was dug just before a long weekend and Len and many of the long serving staff who considered Guyu to be like a son left the Breed Station. Jack and 3 younger staff brought Guyu to near the hole and then the staff too fled, leaving Jack
Land Development Officer. His responsibilities at Lupane were varied and the area he was responsible for was large. Responsibilities included maintenance of roads and providing agricultural extension for tribesmen with regard to crops and livestock. His young family lived in tents in the bush and there was no need to lock anything as the locals respected his property.
Jack’s next posting was on the eastern side of Rhodesia at Mrewa where he was responsible for the government herd of Mashona cattle. Mashona cattle are similar to Tulis in that they are well fleshed, but the Mashona are smaller and predominantly black. They are smaller since they needed to be small enough to enter the door of the tribesman’s hut. Mrewa Breed Station was isolated but well established with fruit trees and gardens. There were well preserved bushman paintings in the area. Jack stayed here for 3 years and because of Mrewa’s proximity to Salisbury it was often visited by officials, animal scientists and vets. The station provided animals for trials and research. As the war intensified, Mrewa was considered too dangerous and Jack and his family were moved to Tuli to assist Len Harvey.
Jack has fond memories of his time at Tuli and found that Len Harvey was an easy man to work with. Len Harvey had an incredible memory and could out of his head identify a particular animal’s pedigree back a couple of generations. Len was always well turned out and no matter

the government herd of Ngunis at Nyamandhlovu, situated northwest of Bulawayo. This rivalry manifested itself mostly on the show circuit which was an important part of the annual calendar. Len had a secret weapon in the form of a superb cow called “Poppy”. She was very feminine with a beautiful udder and was guaranteed to win the interbreed classes. Nothing pleased Len more than performing well at carcass competitions, the ultimate test of a breed in his eyes.
Tuli was as about as far away from Salisbury as one could get and after his experience at Mrewa , Jack was envious of Len’s position: infrequent visits from senior officials! Once when there was a count Len collected some of the cattle and put them through the race twice – saving his staff the effort of collecting 1000 head of cattle and demonstrating that the senior officials were not cattlemen and as long as the numbers matched those on record everything was fine.
The Tuli breed owes its success to Len’s single-minded approach to the task at hand (unfettered by officialdom), and the unique qualities of the parent stock that he so ably identified.
After a couple of years Jack was posted to Gwanda as there was not enough work for both him and Len and thus the “Tuli Chapter” of his life came to an end.
alone to do the final deed. Len returned and never asked any questions and never discussed Guyu again except in context of pedigrees. Len realised it was not an easy thing to do and was grateful that Jack had taken on a task that otherwise would have fallen to him.
Jack assisted with dipping and the day to day running of the station. There were three areas along the banks of the Tuli River where fodder crops were grown. In spite the river appearing dry good quality water could be pumped out of the sand of the riverbed. This fodder was used for animals being prepared for the show circuit.
Len had a friendly rivalry with Keith Brownley who ran

My veld word nou optimaal benut en verliese beperk.
