    UP-TUKS

UP-Tuks’ 2019 season can be best summarisedas one of the best all round performances by anyfirst team of the University in recent times. The team made its presence felt in all thecompetitions in took part and won all but one ofthe championship titles up for grab.

    VARSITY CUP

There was a huge improvement on 2018, whenUP-Tuks only won two of its seven pool matchesand had its worst performance record since thecompetition started way back in 2008.With Nollis Marais taking charge again as headcoach it was to be expected that UP-Tuks will notbe the push over of the previous season despitethe fact that the squad lacked depth and gamebreaking skills in key positions. The team went from strength to strength in thepool stage and only lost one to Maties. BeatingNWU 24-18 in the semi-final secured a place inthe final that took place in the Danie CravenStadium in Stellenbosch. Maties won 34-18 andbecame the first university to claim the covetedVarsity Cup championship title for the fourthtime.Afterwards in the change room Marais told histeam in rugby there will be times when you haveto concede that you were beaten by a betterteam: “Today you gave it your all, but in the endit was just not enough. Losing to this formidableMatie side is no shame and you have every rightto walk tall when you get out of here.”

    VOLCANO INTER-PROVINCIAL COMPETITION

UP-Tuks were unstoppable in this competitionand the 50-26 win against Naka Bulle in the finalwas a fitting conclusion to a season in whichthere was never any doubt to what team set thepace from start to finish. UP-Tuks ended theseason with an unbeaten record and winningpercentage of 97. UP-Tuks won 15 of their 16matches with the draw against Centurion in thepool stage the only blemish.

In the 2nd as well as in the 3rd Leaguecompetitions both our teams were the teams tobeat and it showed as well when both the teamswere crowned Champions of their respectfulleagues against Naka Bulle (2nd's) and QBR(3rd's) .Our U/20 Pumas also showed that they had theteam to win the league. They won the U/20 Bleague competition.

    CARLTON LEAGUE

The Blue Bulls’ in house competition againformed part of the Volcano Cup series. UP-Tukswon the Lucas Strachan Shield as winners of thefirst round and defended their title successfullyby beating Naka Bulle 29-19 in the Carlton Cup‘final’.

    USSA CHAMPIONSHIPS

This annual tournament took place inStellenbosch in July. Second seated UP-Tuksmade it to the final by beating NWU and Wits. This ensured a repeat of the 2018 final whenMaties took UP-Tuks to the cleaners. Like then,Maties were the overwhelming favourites and itwas never of question of if they will win, but onlywith what margin. Surprise, surprise then whenUP-Tuks caught Maties completely off guard witha magnificent performance of guts, big matchtemperament and character. UP-Tuks beat allthe odds and took gold with a nail-biting 19-18win.

    SEVENS

Men: Tuks retained their championship title atthe USSA tournament in Margate, beating UJ in aclosely contested final. At the Varsity Sporttournament, Tuks had less success andrelinquished their 2018 crown by not making thefinal. They lost to Maties in the semis.Ladies: Tuks made a clean sweep at both theUSSA and Varsity Sport Tournaments. They beatFort Hare in both finals.
