Scripture John 3:1-7 (NLT)

3 There was a man named Nicodemus, a Jewish religious leader who

was a Pharisee. 2 After dark one evening, he came to speak with

Jesus. “Rabbi,” he said, “we all know that God has sent you to teach

us. Your miraculous signs are evidence that God is with you.” 3 Jesus

replied, “I tell you the truth, unless you are born again, you cannot

see the Kingdom of God.” 4 “What do you mean?” exclaimed

Nicodemus. “How can an old man go back into his mother’s womb

and be born again?” 5 Jesus replied, “I assure you, no one can enter

the Kingdom of God without being born of water and the Spirit.

6 Humans can reproduce only human life, but the Holy Spirit gives

birth to spiritual life. 7 So don’t be surprised when I say, ‘You

must be

born again.’

Grace, mercy, and peace to you!

We thank God for the women of faith who heard God’s “Yes!” amid a chorus

of “No’s. God is a present help in the time of storm. Yet, scores of African

American women were often ignored as women until the powerful preaching

of Isabella Bomfree, who later named herself, “Sojourner Truth.” In an

excerpt from a message, hear her courageous voice:

“Then that little man in black there says that women can’t have as much

rights as men ‘cause Christ wasn’t a woman. Where did your Christ come

from? Where did your Christ come from? From God and a woman! Man

had nothing to do with Him.”

Truth believed that God called her to preach truth. Her voice called out the

hypocrisy coming from both black and white men. It is unfortunate that the

tradition of “male only” pulpits continues to this day. The Bible tells us that

Mary sat at the feet of Jesus while Martha complained to Jesus about Mary.

(Read Luke 20:38-42). We thank God for the courageous voices and resolve

of Sojourner Truth, Ella Baker, Ida B. Wells, and Fannie Lou Hamer who

said, “You can pray until you faint, but if you don’t get up and try to do

something, God is not going to put it in your lap.” May our words of faith

becomes acts of faith as I remain,

Yours in Christ,

Rev. Ozzie E. Smith, Jr
