STEM contacts neededThe ACBL Educational Foundation is

searching for ACBL members who have may have contacts with national STEM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics) accreditation bodies. The Ed Foundation’s plan is to create bridge modules that can be integrated into STEM curriculums at schools in the U.S.

Members with information or leads should contact Project Committee Chair Barbara Heller at [email protected].

As players increasingly look to digital platforms to provide instructional bridge content as well as opportunities to play, developers of these platforms are on the lookout for ways to attract potential customers by providing unique, interesting material. Bridge teachers also rely on digital platforms more and more to help their students learn about the game.

Two developers – Bid 72 and BridgeBee – are looking to expand their content by asking teachers and other contributors to upload lesson material that can be used not only by their own students, but by other users of the apps, although there are some significant differences between the two products.

bid72Designed as a site to help partnerships practice

their bidding, bid72 is reaching out to bridge educators.

According to bid72’s Jan van Cleeff, “As the new app on bridge education, bid72 has developed special functionality for new players for smartphones and tablets (Android/iOS). Bridge teachers can upload their own boards with themes of their liking. Alternatively, bid72 offers ready-made sets of 100 boards with themes such as limit bids, Stayman and Jacoby transfers. It all works very smoothly. Students open the app and the relevant boards are waiting for them. When a bidding session is finished, a teacher receives a sheet with explanations on the auction.

“Teachers may also receive a PowerPoint presentation with the relevant hand records and an overview of all auctions, allowing teachers to monitor progress of their students.”

Interested parties can contact [email protected] or email van Cleeff at [email protected].

Teachers and players can also check out www.bid72.com to find a wealth of interesting stuff on bidding.

BridgeBeeA collaboration between Baron Barclay Bridge

Supplies and Pianola (the bridge club website platform), the BridgeBee app is still in beta testing, but its goal is to offer interactive bridge lessons, curated by renowned authors such as Marti Ronemus and Frank Stewart.

James Ward of BridgeBee says, “The experience will be like reading your favorite bridge column or book, but it’s interactive. You can play the cards trick by trick.”

To add to its existing content, BridgeBee developers are actively soliciting contributions from teachers and players to construct a vast library of hands, and they are even offering compensation for individuals willing to input lesson material. This will allow subscribers to practice and play new hands that cater to various interests and skill levels, with guidance from authors, teachers, and experts.

A formal launch is planned at the Spring NABC in Columbus.

BridgeBee’s key features include an easy-to-understand interface that accommodates all types of users, quality content, a library of bridge hands that can be stored to subscribers’ accounts that can be accessed from various portable devices, and an interactive learning environment that allows subscribers to experience each hand, play-by-play, to better understand the intricacies in a way that a book may not be able to provide.

More information is available at www.bridgebee.app or by email at [email protected].

entries outside of hearts to set up the suit: one to get over there to ruff the fourth round of hearts, and one to get back to dummy to use the established fifth heart after drawing trumps. If you don’t have the necessary entries, forget long suit establishment and try something else.

Win the ♣A, cash a high spade from your hand, leaving two trump entries in dummy, and then the ♥A K and ruff a heart. Assuming 4-2 hearts, return to dummy with a spade, ruff a heart high setting up the fifth heart, and cross back to a spade to discard the ♣Q on the long heart. Beautiful.

The full deal: ♠ A 10 2 ♥ A K 8 7 5 ♦ J 9 8 ♣ 10 2 ♠ 6 4 ♠ 5 3 ♥ Q J 6 4 3 ♥ 9 ♦ K Q 10 ♦ A 7 4 2 ♣ J 9 8 ♣ K 7 6 5 4 3 ♠ K Q J 9 8 7 ♥ 10 2 ♦ 6 5 3 ♣ A Q

What happened? East ruffed the second heart and cashed the ♣K, down two and the club finesse was onside all along! Why am I so mean to you? I wasn’t. You played the hand properly. Only someone who misplayed the hand badly and took the club finesse made it. For shame if you made this hand!

♠ A 10 2 ♥ A K 8 7 5 ♦ J 9 8 ♣ 10 2

♠ K Q J 9 8 7 ♥ 10 2 ♦ 6 5 3 ♣ A Q

You crawl into 4♠ after partner responds 2♥ to your opening 1♠ bid and raises your 2♠ rebid to 4♠.

West leads the ♦K, ♦Q and ♦10 to East’s ace and East exits with the expected low club. Plan the play.

The club finesse is a 50-50 shot. However, setting up the hearts for a club discard, needing no worse than 4-2 hearts, logs in at 84%.

Warning: When setting up a long suit, side entries to the hand with the long suit must be conserved. And there must be enough of them. If hearts are a likely 4-2, you will need two dummy

Christy Kelso, left, and Sally Giloth came from Santa Barbara. Giloth, who has been playing duplicate for 10 years, went to her first NABC a year ago in Honolulu to take the Best Practices Teacher Workshop. A retired teacher, she has been teaching beginners since then. “I only teach beginners, because I’m not much more,” Giloth said. “It’s hard to go back and forth between what I play – 2/1 – and what I teach – Standard American.” Kelso has been relearning bridge since 2015. She’s been learning a bit more lately thanks to a mentorship program that Giloth started at the Santa Barbara Bridge Center. On Monday afternoon they were playing in the 299er Pairs after playing in their first knockout in the morning. “We’re having fun here,” Giloth said.

The meeting will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 4, in Pacific F on level 4. Bring your own coffee.

Convention card reminder

Each player is required to have a convention card filled out legibly and on the table throughout a session. The convention card must include the first and last name of each member of the partnership, and the cards must be identical.

If a director determines that neither player has a substantially completed card, the partnership may play only the Standard American Yellow Card and may use only standard carding. This restriction may be lifted only at the beginning of a subsequent round after convention cards have been properly prepared and approved by the director. Further, the partnership will receive a 1/6-board matchpoint penalty for each board played, commencing with the next round and continuing until the restriction is lifted. In IMP team games, penalties shall be at the discretion of the director.

If the director determines the partnership has at least one substantially completed convention card but has not fully complied with ACBL regulations, the director may give warnings or assign such penalties as he deems to be appropriate under the circumstances.

The objective of these warnings and penalties is the encouragement of full compliance with ACBL regulations.

Francisco, including in 2007 and 2012.The team scored 14 and 17.5 in Sunday’s

qualifying sessions to qualify 12th-14th with a carryover of 2.17, then 19.5 and 14.5 in Monday’s final sessions. Their final score of 36.17 was far ahead of the second-place team captained by Margie Cole, which scored 33.33.

Cole played with Alejandro Bianchedi, Giorgia Botta and Cenk Tuncok.

Shortly before the start of the Fall NABC, Milne and Hung played against each other in the Australian team trials, where Hung’s team won. “I’m lucky enough to have him as a partner rather than an opponent now,” Milne said.

Goodwill Reception

Among her service to the district, Robertson:• wrote the district bylaws.• served on the youth bridge committee since its

inception.• wrote guidelines for distributing grants.• negotiated a lease for a district van.• serves as information chair for this NABC as she

did for the 2012 Fall NABC.Robinson also served on the board of the Western

Conference for 12 years and rewrote its bylaws.“Marion’s biggest

contribution is she always says yes,” Zayac said.

DeMartino also announced the Goodwill Member of the Year, who will be presented with the award in Columbus. William Stine of Rancho Mirage CA will be recognized for his selfless commitment to our players and the game, she said, citing his nomination. “As tournament and unit chairperson, he has established a group of volunteers and works alongside them at every opportunity,” she said. When two new directors needed transportation to attend a training program, he gave up a day of his time to drive them and wait while they completed their class.

Both Joe Jones, the ACBL executive director, and Russ Jones, the outgoing president, talked about how goodwill is critical to recruiting and retaining new members. Joe Jones applauded the committee members for their volunteerism and for being goodwill ambassadors.

“Goodwill is fundamental to growing the game and building membership,” he said. “As ambassadors of the game, you set the example everyone should follow in order to ensure the future of the game we love so much.”

About 120 people attended the Goodwill reception.

The 2018 winners of the Kaplan Blue Ribbon Pairs were Robert Levin and Joe Grue.

Edgar Kaplan Blue Ribbon Pairs

The eventThe Edgar Kaplan Blue Ribbon Pairs ranks with

the von Zedtwitz Life Master Pairs in the summer and the Platinum Pairs in the spring as the most prestigious — and toughest — pair events on the ACBL calendar. Like the LM Pairs and Platinum Pairs, the Blue Ribbon Pairs is played over three days and includes two qualifying, two semifinal and two final sessions.

Entry is restricted to winners and runners-up in regional championships — plus high finishers in North American championships, members of current Grand National district championship teams, members of current official teams representing ACBL and the top 100 lifetime masterpoint holders.

The Blue Ribbon Pairs was renamed the Edgar Kaplan Blue Ribbon Pairs in 1999 to honor one of bridge’s all-time great players, writers, administrators and the authority on the laws of the game.

Kaplan (1925–1997) won his first North American championship in 1953 – the Vanderbilt – and his last in 1997 – the Open Swiss Teams at the Spring NABC in Dallas.

Kaplan was recognized as the world’s foremost authority on the laws of duplicate and rubber bridge. He became co-chairman of the ACBL Laws Commission in 1978 and was co-chairman of the WBF Laws Commission at the time of his death.

He was named ACBL Honorary Member in 1993. In 1995 he was inducted into the ACBL Bridge Hall of Fame and the WBF Hall of Fame.

The trophyThe event is contested for the Cavendish Trophy,

awarded for the National Open Pair Championship and donated by the Cavendish Club of New York in 1928. Since 1963, the trophy has honored the winners of the Blue Ribbon Pairs.

Nail LM actionBy Barry Rigal

Finn Kolesnik and John Ramos defended 4♠ on this deal from the second final session of the Nail Life Master Pairs: Dlr: North ♠ Q Vul: N–S ♥ 7 2 Bd: 21 ♦ A K 9 8 5 4 ♣ Q 8 5 4 ♠ A 8 4 ♠ K 9 7 5 2 ♥ A 10 6 4 3 ♥ K Q J ♦ Q 10 7 ♦ 6 3 2 ♣ A 10 ♣ 7 3 ♠ J 10 6 3 ♥ 9 8 5 ♦ J ♣ K J 9 6 2 West North East South 1♦ 1♠ Pass 2♦ Pass 2♠ Pass 4♠ All Pass

We can all see that the defenders can take four tricks easily enough. Kolesnik led the ♦J to the queen and king, and Kolesnik might have done best to shift to a club. When he played the ♠Q, declarer misguessed, running this to dummy and playing a second trump, ducking it to South. Back came a club. Declarer won the ace and played the ♠K and another spade, pitching a club from dummy. this produced an unusual position ♠ — ♥ 7 2 ♦ A 9 8 ♣ Q 8 ♠ — ♠ 9 ♥ A 10 6 4 3 ♥ K Q J ♦ 10 7 ♦ 6 2 ♣ — ♣ 7 ♠ — ♥ 9 8 5 ♦ — ♣ K J 9 6

If South cashes the ♣K, declarer pitches a diamond from dummy and has the rest. Ramos played a low club and let partner in to cash out for down two.

The next deal saw two different declarers looking for pressure in the endgame: Dlr: East ♠ A K 9 8 2 Vul: E-W ♥ A K 6 Bd: 22 ♦ J ♣ A K 7 4 ♠ Q 3 ♠ 10 7 6 5 ♥ Q J 9 4 3 ♥ 10 2 ♦ K 10 6 4 3 2 ♦ 8 7 5 ♣ — ♣ Q J 10 6 ♠ J 4 ♥ 8 7 5 ♦ A Q 9 ♣ 9 8 5 3 2

Ramos declared 3NT after a Gazzilli auction where North showed spades and clubs and South showed diamond values: West North East South Pass Pass Pass 1♠ Pass 1NT Pass 2♣ (1) Pass 2♦ (2) Pass 2♥ (3) Pass 2♠ Pass 3♣ Pass 3♦ Pass 3♥ Pass 3♠ Pass 3NT All Pass

(1) 16+ HCP(2) 7+ HCP(3) spades + second suitWest did well to lead a top heart. Ramos cashed

one club to find the bad news and ran the ♠8 to West, who exited in hearts. Ramos unblocked spades, cashed the second top club and ran spades. In the four-card ending, West kept two hearts and two diamonds, so Ramos threw him in with a heart to lead diamonds into the tenace for 10 tricks.

Ron Gerard, North, playing with Mathias Felmy, played 4♠ after West had opened 2♥ in third seat. He won the heart lead and played spades from the top, letting East win the 10 and lead a second heart. Gerard won and drew the last trump, then cashed the ♣A to find the bad news. Now he cashed the last trump (forcing a diamond out of East) and the master club; West put him under pressure by pitching diamonds at every turn so that he could avoid the endplay. The four-card ending: ♠ — ♥ 6 ♦ J ♣ 7 4 ♠ — ♠ — ♥ Q J 4 ♥ — ♦ K ♦ 8 7 ♣ — ♣ Q J ♠ — ♥ 8 ♦ A Q 9 ♣ —

West had had to pitch the ♦10 to maximize the pressure, and Gerard (who knew West had 2=5=6=0 pattern) guessed well to lead the ♦J to the ace, bringing home the overtrick.

The past comes aliveDutch players Frank van Wezel and Hans van

de Konijnenberg collect books, magazines and Daily Bulletins about bridge. They especially enjoy reading Daily Bulletins from the pre-internet era – these periodicals are a treasure trove of wonderful photographs, marvelous sketches, splendid deals and tremendous stories and anecdotes.

Van Wezel and van de Konijnenberg decided that this material should be at the disposal of all bridge players. At the same time, they want to save the history of bridge from oblivion. Therefore they launched a free website: www.bridgedailybulletins.nl.

On this site you may find thousands of bulletins, both from the digital era and before. WBF, EBL and ACBL championship bulletins are posted, as well as many from miscellaneous tournaments around the world.

If you have bulletins that they are missing, please contact them. Contact details can be found on the website.

The 2018 Whitehead Women’s Pairs champs were Tatiana Dikhnova and Tatiana Ponomareva.

Women’s Pairs compete for Whitehead Trophy

Play begins today in the Whitehead Women’s Pairs with two qualifying sessions, followed by two final sessions tomorrow.

At stake is the Whitehead Trophy, donated in 1930 by Wilbur C. Whitehead of New York, a great bridge authority and a member of the team that won the Vanderbilt Cup in 1928, the first year it was in play.

Whitehead (1866–1931) was president of the Simplex Automobile Company, but bridge held such a fascination for him that he retired from business in 1910 to devote his life to bridge.

He was the inventor of many bidding and play conventions, the quick-trick table of card values, the Whitehead system of requirements for original bids and responses and the Whitehead table of preferential leads.

Whitehead was instrumental in standardizing procedures in auction bridge and later in contract bridge.

This event was for many years played at the Spring NABC until moving to the fall last year.

The popular Learn Bridge in a Day class drew 12 tables of students on Saturday. Patty Tucker teaches the class at each NABC and some regionals each year.

Patty Tucker also taught Doubles in a Day to eight tables of students on Sunday. Later that night some students eagerly practiced usage of the double card in the evening 299er game.

Gifted studentGary Near reported the following deal from the

first qualifying session of the Super Senior Pairs. Near was playing with Fred Chasalow against Hall of Famer Fred Hamilton and Rose Boot:

West North East South Boot Chasalow Near Hamilton Pass 2♠ (1) 2NT Pass Pass 3♦ Dbl All Pass

(1) WeakThe meaning of the double was, perhaps, unclear

on this unusual sequence, but Near lost just two trumps and two spades to make 3♦ doubled for plus 470 and 92% of the matchpoints.

At the break, Near wandered out to the hallway and encountered Hamilton, and old friend and mentor. Defending his decision to open a weak two-bid and bid again, Near said, “Freddie, you always taught me that when you have a distributional hand, to bid ’em up.”

Hamilton, grinning, said, “I taught you too well!”

Appealing a ruling Players in NABC+ events who want to appeal a director’s ruling initiate the process by speaking with

the director who delivered the original ruling. The table director will fill out paperwork regarding the appeal, and the appellants will explain what they believe to be wrong with the initial ruling. From there, the case may be handled by a variety of means. When the appeals reviewer receives the case, the circumstances of that particular case will determine whether the case can be resolved by the original staff (in the case of misapplication of Law or regulation, for instance), a panel of directors, or even a committee-type hearing which could include bridge experts.

Super Senior Super Superb Strip Squeeze

By Bob SannerIn the second qualifying session of the Super

Senior Pairs on Sunday, my partner Ron Powell showed that a few seniors still have some brain cells left by executing an elegant strip squeeze. Dlr: South ♠ K J 10 7 4 3 Vul: None ♥ 7 6 Bd: 11 ♦ J 9 6 5 ♣ 5 ♠ A Q 2 ♠ 8 6 5 ♥ Q 8 2 ♥ A K 9 5 3 ♦ K 10 8 2 ♦ 7 4 3 ♣ J 9 4 ♣ A K ♠ 9 ♥ J 10 4 ♦ A Q ♣ Q 10 8 7 6 3 2

West North East South Me Ron 3♣ Pass Pass 3♥ Pass 4♥ All Pass

South led the ♠9. Clearly, the spades were offside, and the lead looked like a singleton, so Ron rose with dummy’s ace. He played the ♥A K and lead a diamond. South rose with the ♦A and exited with a club. Ron won in hand, drew the remaining trump, returned to hand with a club and led another diamond. But when South played the queen, Ron ducked in dummy!

South returned the ♣Q, which declarer ruffed. Ron had a perfect count: South had started with a 1=3=2=7 pattern. This was the position: ♠ K J ♥ — ♦ J 9 ♣ — ♠ Q 2 ♠ 8 6 ♥ — ♥ 9 ♦ K 10 ♦ 7 ♣ — ♣ — ♠ — ♥ — ♦ — ♣ 10 8 7 6

When declarer led the last trump, a spade was discarded from dummy. North had to discard the ♠J, but then a spade lead put North on lead with the king, forcing him to return a diamond into dummy’s tenace. Making four.

In our section, 12 declarers made nine tricks, but five achieved 10 tricks.

Single dummy or double dummy?

By Barry RigalThese deals comes from the first qualifying

session of the Mitchell Open Board-a-Match Teams. Dlr: East ♠ 8 6 5 2 Vul: Both ♥ A 10 7 6 3 Bd: 10 ♦ Q 10 8 ♣ A ♠ J 9 4 ♠ 10 7 ♥ Q J 9 8 5 4 ♥ K ♦ 3 ♦ J 9 7 5 4 2 ♣ 8 7 4 ♣ K J 9 2 ♠ A K Q 3 ♥ 2 ♦ A K 6 ♣ Q 10 6 5 3

The best plays at single dummy and double dummy aren’t always the same. But this is a fairly gentle entry to the world of double dummy.

If you played 6♠ on an unopposed sequence, you’d win the diamond lead and use two trump entries to try to ruff a couple of clubs, then try to come back to hand in diamonds to draw the last trump. Disaster: West ruffs in and down you go.

But say East opens 2♦ and you play slam, maybe on an auction: West North East South 2♦ Dbl Pass 3♦ Pass 4♦ Pass 4♥ Pass 6♠ All Pass

West leads his singleton diamond, so now you can play with the sight of all 52 cards. Can you make slam now?

Say you win the ♦Q, play the ♣A, trump to hand, ruff a club and lead a trump to hand to ruff another

club.Trumps have broken, but the ♣K has not put in

an appearance. So now you have to guess, knowing East will have quite a few values in clubs and hearts because he opened vulnerable.

If West is 2=6=1=4, you must come to hand with a diamond, but if you guess well you will play the ♥A and ruff a heart, draw the last trump and exit in clubs to East. That player only has diamonds left, so your hand is high. Acol and weak notrumps, hence the 1♠ opener. The defense led a top diamond and shifted to the ♥Q. Senior ducked and won the next heart, ruffed a diamond and drew trumps, leaving a complex choice of endings: ♠ — ♥ J 8 ♦ A 9 ♣ J 4 ♠ 10 ♠ 9 ♥ 10 ♥ 5 ♦ — ♦ — ♣ K 10 5 3 ♣ A 9 7 6 ♠ — ♥— ♦ Q J 4 ♣ Q 8 2

At this point it looked as if North was 1=5=4=3, so the best play might be to play South with a doubleton club honor. So you lead a club to the king and plan to duck a club to South’s doubleton honor for the ruff-sluff. As the cards lie, North has an unexpected shape, and South will be endplayed on the third club. Note that if declarer exits with a heart in the six-card ending, North can safely lead a diamond because if this gives a ruff-sluff, declarer will have begun with four clubs in each hand.

MonitoringACBL monitors events at North American Bridge Championships with both visible and concealed real-

time cameras in public spaces. The images are recorded and available for later inspection and review by ACBL management and tournament officials, among others, including members of the Anti-Cheating Commission. These recordings are also uploaded to the internet following the NABC.

By general monitoring of the session and participants’ behavior, ACBL has another source of information that may be useful in determining facts and settling issues or disputes arising from some types of ethical and behavioral complaints or actions. Please summon a director if a problem occurs at the table. This procedure is intended to assure everyone that the playing field is level and that misbehavior will not be tolerated.

and sectionals, as well as cruises (with another local director, Barbara Prior), but her primary focus has been directing and teaching in Marin, and that remains so to this day.

Peggy says she is trying to do less as she gets older, but doesn’t see herself “retiring” in the full sense of the word anytime in the near future. She enjoys the active bridge community in Marin, surrounded by lovely people (for the most part), and says it is a pleasure to be a part of it. She is humbled and honored to have received this gift of a named day at the San Francisco NABC from Marin bridge players. It is something she will never forget! And neither will her legions of students and club players who made this day possible. Along with contributions of money, there was an outpouring of “Peggy stories.” Her community is thrilled to be able to celebrate this special day with her in the “City by the Bay.”

Tom PajakIf Tom Pajak were

a baseball player, he’d handle all nine positions flawlessly and be revered by teammates and opponents alike. Unanimous MVP, with a smile for everyone and remarkable aplomb in all situations. That sums

up Tom’s service to Unit 502 (and the larger bridge community) over several decades, even serving as president of District 21 for the past two years. The Unit 502 board voted unanimously to honor Tom with this token of our thanks and admiration.

The Monday-Wednesday Morning Side Game Series is named in honor of Tom Pajak.

Today is Peggy Tatro DayPeggy Tatro is a fixture

of Marin Bridge. Her Terra Linda Bridge Club runs five and occasionally six games a week, many with multiple sections. The welcoming and congenial atmosphere draws both local players and those from neighboring units.

Peggy grew up in Shawnee Mission KS and came to the Bay Area in 1977, pregnant with her second son. She finished her college studies at UC Berkeley, remembering that it seemed like the oldest person in her literature classes was in her late 20s! In 1981, her mother urged her to learn bridge because her husband was working 80 hours a week and she was home alone with two small boys. Taking that advice to heart, Peggy played avidly during the 1980s and participated in her first NABC in 1986 in Pasadena.

Peggy’s bridge career began with her “helping out” at a local bridge club during that time, becoming an ACBL accredited teacher. She got divorced in 1990, and at the same time the opportunity arose to teach and direct bridge at a local tennis/fitness club (Rolling Hills Club, owned by Warren Wertheimer). Peggy took the director course and began running bridge activities there in September 1990 on a part-time basis. In addition to full-time motherhood and her work at the tennis club, Peggy was attending business school. After graduation, she had the opportunity to take over a bridge club in San Rafael, with two sanctioned games per week. After giving a lot of thought to the direction she should go – corporate America or local bridge – local bridge was her choice. Peggy has never looked back. Over the years she has directed at regional tournaments

here for almost five decades. He was born on Sept. 16, 1939, in Kalamazoo MI and liked to joke that he flunked out of the University of Michigan three times because he found bridge to be so much more interesting than his classes. Eventually, he got his degree in finance, and moved to San Francisco where he worked as an accountant until he became a full-time bridge pro in 1988. He amassed over 19,750 masterpoints and earned the title of Grand Life Master when he won the Lebhar IMP Pairs at the 1991 Las Vegas NABC. When diagnosed with ALS two years ago, Harvey handled it his way, and passed quietly in his sleep in January 2018. The Tuesday-Wednesday Knockout Teams are named in memory of Harvey Brody.

Lee Pollak: a WinnerAbout 25

years ago, when Lee Pollak’s mother, Arnette Labe’ Stark, died, Lee created a bridge club to memorialize her mother’s love of the game. This act also embodied the essence of Lee: honoring family, partnering with her husband Stu, playfulness, lifelong learning – all in the company of friends.

We salute Lee and look forward to playing with her, competing with her tonight! The Evening Side Swiss Teams are named in honor of Lee Pollack.
