Corn & Wheat Rally!!! About the time we

think the market isn’t paying attention to the

wet forecast, in comes the short covering from

the funds. Diana Klemme commented today:

“Corn rally may be tied to rumors of 'issues'

regarding the EPA's ethanol mandates; not

sure there's anything worthy of a 9 cent rally

but funds are heavily short and they may

want to step aside and let the dust settle???

May is still well within the recent broad range

of $3.54 to $3.85 but it's starting to move

above the 50 and 100 day moving average

lines....Wheat has found some short-covering

with chatter about whether cold temps

ahead will damage wheat.... Big test will

come to see if corn can follow thru tomorrow

or falls flat again.”

December corn futures broke back above ALL

of its moving average lines, closing just below

the 50-day MA (gold line) tonight. That level

($3.89 ½) and then the April high ($3.95 ¾)

would be the next targets this week. KC July

wheat pushed back up to its key resistance at

its 9 & 20-day MA’s @$4.27 (red line) & $4.31

¾ (blue line) respectively. For now, wheat

appears to be following the corn market.

This week’s Planting Progress Report showed overall planting progress for most crops near the 5-year averages. Those are

currently running: corn – 17% vs 18% avg; soybeans – 6% vs 3% avg; cotton – 11% vs 12% avg; sorghum – 24% vs 23% avg; spring

wheat – 22% vs 34%; oats – 57% vs 62% avg; winter wheat condition – 54% good/excellent (unch), 13% poor/very poor (unch).

The last couple of days have shown excellent planting progress in many areas, according to Twitter. But that appears to be going

to change over the next few days, and throughout the next couple of weeks, as the 7-day, 6-10 day, & 8-14 day forecasts again

tonight show above-normal precipitation expected for much of the US. This map shows where the most severe weather is

expected during the first couple of rounds of storms.
