Tena Koutou Katoa, Talofa Lava, Kia Orana, Ni Sa Bula, Fakalofa Lahi Atu, Malo e Lelei, Greetings.

Greetings,

We have all seen the sickening and tragic events that took place at the music concert in Manchester.

Reports that a “radicalised”, young man of 22 years of age was responsible for this.

What makes this even harder for us to understand is the target of this act being young people who were out for the night enjoying music, friends and each others company.

Media show us many young men, even New Zealanders, who have travelled to terrorist hot spots and who have come under the influence of some crazy cleric who brainwashes these young men with promises of eternal freedom through being martyrs.

There is nothing at all spiritual about this and these young men are really in a spiritual wasteland. They are vulnerable, lost and trying to find acceptance and sadly notoriety in a world that they are alienated from.

As educators of our young men it is our job to help them realise they all have a very important place in their family, school, community and world. They all have a promising future and opportunities for them are great. At De La Salle our Vision is “To create Great Men of Learning, Community and Character ”. Men who are holistically

From the Principal - Myles Hogarty

educated, great sons, brothers, future fathers,

men who will contribute positively to their

community after their school years. Men who

will find success and fulfilment in themselves

and not feel they have to find it under some

radical hate-filled ideology overseas.

At De La Salle we do it through:

1) Educational Achievement

Working hard, being at school every day, clear

goals for raising achievement.

2) Service

Using your skills and time for the good of

others to connect with those people in your

community.

3) Co-Curriculum Activities

Playing Sport, Music, Faith groups, Cultural

and participating actively in our College to

grow ownership of our De La Salle community

- belonging.

4) Our Faith traditions and rituals

The routines and rituals of our Catholic and

Lasallian heritage are grown in us and lived

out in our daily lives - Spirituality.

5) Learning to Reflect

A much needed practice for our young men

who need to be able to stop - breathe -

think internally in the constantly changing and

moving world they live in.

We pray for the families of the Manchester

tragedy and reflect on the importance of

providing our young men with “education and

hope”, in their lives.

God Bless

Bullying !!

It has been said that schools cannot be responsible for everything and that parents need to take responsibility for ensuring their children know what sort of behaviour is accepta-ble, and what isn't. But the fact of the matter is, bullying isn't an ‘us’ and ‘them’ sort of problem. Regardless of who provides the support, our young men need help to find the line between right and wrong, and they need to have clear avenues for help and support before feeling things can't get any better.

It requires our school, students, parents, whanau and community working together. If we create an expectation when our children are young that bullying is not acceptable, they will grow into adults that share that same message in their workplaces, in their homes and in their communities.

This is a battle we cannot afford to lose. Conversations with our children about what we expect from them, teaching them right from wrong, and letting them know that bullying is never acceptable will give us a chance. Letting our young people know that there is always support available whether you are a perpetrator of bullying or a victim of bullying will give us a chance.

De La Salle College has zero tolerance when it comes to bullying and if we become aware of this issue, we deal with this immediately. The only way that we can do this, however, is for students to let a staff member or adult know about it.

GREAT THINGS

On Wednesday this week we had a visitor come in to speak to the Yr 10 and 11 boys at levels assembly. He is Toko Fale, an old-boy from 2000, who told a little of his story. He failed Yr 13 and then repeated and passed. He then was able to get a rugby scholarship to play in Japan. He went with four others from South Auckland, and a coach. After 18 months he was the only one left, at university, learning Japanese. It was difficult but he stayed. He went on to complete a full degree at a Japanese University. He played several years of rugby but then lost his contract and had to start doing furniture removal and odd-jobs. It was difficult but he stayed. He decided to become a professional wrestler, which takes two years training to get to the startline and no foreigner had ever completed the training in Japan. It was very hard and he had no money, but he stayed and completed the training. He then became a very successful professional wrestler, known as ‘The Underboss’ or ‘Bad Luck Fale’. He said that one of the main reasons that he kept going was that at both of his graduations at DLS, as he went to collect his certificate a teacher said to him “We expect great things from you”. Those words rang in his ears for a good 10 years and helped ensure his success.

Toko’s goal now is to help young people from South Auckland, not just with wrestling but with training so as to get themselves closer to their goals. To that end he has started a gym in Wiri which opened earlier this year. He wants other young men to have the skills to take up any opportunity when it comes their way. After he had finished he said, ‘I’d like to do a little experiment, I just need one volunteer’. The boys were not keen, and it took about a minute for a boy to stand up. As the boy came forward Toko gave him a $20 note and told him to sit down. He then said ‘Take your opportunities. It was a stark and clear message not to worry about what others think. We look forward to many more successful old-boys coming in to pass on their stories and wisdom to the boys.

CURRICULUM - Mr Doyle Term two is time to start getting boys thinking about their NZQA Fees. Thanks to those families that have already started making arrangements.

Year 11 – 13 NZQA Fees and Financial Assistance Deadline 1st September

Senior students must pay a standard annual fee to have their NZQA results recorded on their Rec-ord of Achievement, qualifications awarded and to receive certificates. Candidates who do not pay fees will have their results released. However, the credits gained will not appear on the Record of Achievement or be used to award qualifications until the fees are paid.

Financial assistance is available to all students and families who are within the income thresholds. The purpose of financial assistance is to ensure that fees are not a barrier to participation in national qualifications for domestic students in low-to middle income families. Any family with a WINZ/study link benefit or Community services card automatically qualify under the income based application. However, it is not necessary for a family to have either of these. The key is to complete the Financial Assistance form. Schools of a similar type to ours have up to 80 % of students eligible for financial assistance.

There are plenty of Financial Assistance forms at the Office. Students have had a form sent home from Homerooms. Students can pay directly to NZQA or Mrs Puni here at school.

Fees Financial Assistance : $20 individual, $30 family Full fee: $76.70

Please encourage students to make arrangements to pay before 1st September.

Families are able to get assistance … If the family yearly income

is less than…

Family of 2 $49,447

Family of 3 $59,743

Family of 4 $67,932

Family of 5 $75,952

Family of 6 $84,915

For families of more than six, the limit goes up another $7,857 for each extra person.

Congratulations to Aotearoa Aho who was placed 2nd in Te Reo Scripture Reading for Pompallier Shield .

SPECIAL CHARACTER - Br Lewis

On Friday the 19th of May, the College celebrated the feast of St John Baptist de La Salle, a saint of the Catholic Church and the patron saint of teachers.

The day began with a staff briefing offered to remember the occasion with a teacher reflection and prayer using the letters of the Founder. The day was enlivened by the presence of students and staff from our other Lasallian Colleges - John Paul College Rotorua and Francis Douglas Memorial College, New Plymouth.

The students first attended an extended homeroom period which focused on a Lasallian formation activity to deepen their understanding of the enduring story and history of the Institute

The whole College then participated in the Holy Eucharist presided by Fr Brian who encouraged the students to be "city saints" of Auckland and to live with respect for all people regardless of gender, class and culture. Br Sir Pat Lynch was invited to also share a short reflection where he urged students to understand St John Baptist de La Salle as a gracious role model in offering our lives to service of others. The liturgy was enriched by the music adding to the reverent and celebratory joy of the occasion.

Students and staff were encouraged to continue to reflect on the Lasallian charism as a gift of the Church in the legacy of St John Baptist de La Salle. The theme of working together and by association for the educational service of young people is a lasting tribute to a remarkable person - a disciple of Christ who lived a life of faith, service and community.

Widget Workshop - Junior Technology Club

Last Tuesday marked the beginning of the Widget Workshop, a Technology Club for Junior students Year 7 to 10. The aim of the club is to introduce students to a range of technological and engineering ideas and and encourage the development of technical skills, computational thinking and problem solving.

In our first session, students were required to create a musical instrument that used as much organic matter as possible and the results were very creative.

Being given nothing else but a makey makey and laptop, students were required to solve the problem of designing a functioning musical instrument on which they could play a small well known song. One group used leaves, petals and a pear from the bin outside to play the school song, while another group found that by linking themselves together, they could create a circuit that would enable them all to play the song in turns.

Mrs Hay was impressed by the level of creativity and team work demonstrated by the groups and is looking forward to presenting more challenges to the group in weeks to come.

COMMUNITY SERVICE: (January – May 2017)

The College mission is to ‘Teach boys in a Catholic environment of LOVE and SERVICE.’ ‘Men of Service’ they must become to work for and alongside their families, communities and those in need.

In proof that they are truly ‘men of service’, 27 boys signed up to volunteer at the 2017 World Masters Games. Volunteering they did, with enthusiasm and authenticity.

The school Head Boy, Jason Eteru Fuailefau, in his testimony, spoke highly of the experiences that he and his La Sallian brothers acquired from the WMGs. At the school assembly on Tuesday, each boy was awarded a certificate and a thank you gift from the organising committee of the WMGs as a token of appreciation of their service. Thank you. CAREERS

Recently our year 12 student Xavier Fa’asolo took part in a DEFENCE CAREERS EXPERIENCE. Four days experiencing life on an airforce training base, including being woken at 5.30 each morning for PT (Physical Training), was an interesting experience for Xavier who is planning to apply for Pilot or Engineer training in the Air Force. Students from all over North Island took part and the expectations for performance and behaviour were high. Visiting Whenuapai AirBase was a highlight – getting to view inside aircraft such as the C130 – Hercules cargo plane “the workhorse”.

Requirements for entry to the Airforce include Level 2 – including 18 Maths credits, 18 English credits and 18 Science credits – preferably Physics. NCEA level 3 is required for Officer roles. More information and application deadlines are available from the careers room and on the Defence Forces website, www.stepup.mil.nz, and www.facebook.com/manukaudefencerecruiting.

Students are also welcome to attend regular information sessions held in the evenings at Westfield Manukau on Level 1 in the Defence Careers Office. The next one is scheduled for Thursday 8 June from 6 – 8pm.

GATEWAY

Focus on Trades

Solomone enrolled in the Gateway programme as a Year 12 student

in 2016. He was interested in becoming an electrician. His

understanding of mathematics and physics were strong at level 2.

His journey towards an electrical apprenticeship began in 2016 when

he agreed to a work placement one-day-per-week with a registered

electrician. He also studied to attain his car learner licence and forklift

licence, gained his first aid certificate and attended a Site Safe course.

In 2017, Solomone increased his placement days to two-days-per-

week and is studying electrical theory through the Skills organisation.

He has just completed a Safety at Heights qualification. He will sit his

car restricted licence in September this year and hopes to be signed

into an apprenticeship before the end of the year.
