Learning Objectives
• To identify the difference between deciduous and evergreen trees.
• Recognise leaves as a unique feature of plants.
Scientific skills:
• Making observations
• Comparing and contrasting familiar plants
• Describing how they are able to identify and make groups (identifying and classifying)
• Ask simple questions
We have been learning about…
Plants.
Can you recognise any of these plants?
Today we are going to be learning about trees!
Terrific Trees
There are two types of tree, deciduous and evergreen.
What do you think makes a tree an evergreen?
(The clue is in the name!)
evergreen
An evergreen tree keeps its green leaves all year round, even in
the winter.
Terrific Trees
A deciduous tree loses its leaves each
year.
Do you know what time of
year it is when the leaves
usually fall from the trees?
Terrific Trees
In autumn, the leaves on deciduous trees usually
change colour and fall off. If they have fruit, it will be
ready to eat.
Terrific Trees
In winter, deciduous trees usually have no leaves on
their branches.
In spring, the trees grow beautiful blossoms and new
leaves.
Terrific Trees
In summer, deciduous trees have many leaves and some
begin to grow fruit
A trees fingerprint!Just like how you and I have unique fingerprints that give information a tree has its leaves!
The trees around us have different types of leaves that help give us more information.
Have a look on the next slides to spy some different types of leaves.
Lovely leaves!
Lovely leaves!
Lovely leaves!
Look out the window. Can you see any
trees?
Can you spot what type of tree they are?
Are they evergreen or deciduous?
Lovely leaves!
Deciduous or Evergreen?
Look at the pictures below. Three
of the leaves are from evergreen
trees and three of them are
deciduous.
Look closely at the leaves on the
sorting cards.
In your book draw two columns.
Sort the leaves into two groups by
drawing or writing their name.
Evergreen leaves are:
• thick
• waxy
• small
• narrow like needles
Deciduous leaves are:
• broad
• flat
• have veins running through them

Mystery Doug! If you interested in extra science fun. Mystery Doug is a website that posts scientific videos for children. We used them in the classroom all the time and the children loved them!
I will post some in my science lessons but it is free to sign up and you can access more of them in your own time. The children know all about it!
