From The Principal

Staffing Appointment

It is with great pleasure that we welcome Miss Stephanie

Illing to Mulgrave Primary School in Term 3. Stephanie will be

replacing Mrs Di Iorio who will begin her family leave at the

beginning of next term. After a global search for Mrs Di Iorio’s

replacement, with candidates from Europe and the USA,

Miss Illing was the stand out candidate and comes to us via

Wisconsin, USA, where she has spent the last couple of years

teaching a Year 4 class. Prior to this she worked locally in

Monash for several years, demonstrating her expertise in a

range of roles. Miss Illing’s experience and knowledge of

the teaching and learning strategies implemented at MPS set

her apart from the rest of the field and I am confident that

she will hit the ground running. Over the next few weeks Mrs

Di Iorio will ensure a smooth hand over occurs and the Year 3

& 4 team will be sure to support Miss Illing as we welcome

her to our school.

Unleashing Greatness Together – Leading Excellence in

Teaching and Learning

Last week Stuart, Tom and I attended the DET North Eastern

Victoria Regional Conference. This was a great opportunity

to celebrate the individual success of our school and take

some time to look at how we can continue to improve. The

conference was a gathering of extraordinary expertise,

sharing knowledge with other principals, with opportunities to

engage with local and global leaders in education. The

conference aimed to build the strength of instructional

leaders whose charge it is to lead excellence in teaching

and learning, something that the leadership team will

develop further now and into the future.

Along with workshop presentations, keynote speakers

Professors Viviane Robinson and Michael Fullan posed

provocations such as ‘What is the instructional leader’s role in

leading excellence in teaching and learning?’ and ‘How do

leaders cultivate collaborative cultures?’ This led to

discussions around how we create successful learners who

are confident and creative individuals, so we will continue to

ask ‘What works well in teaching and what do quality

teachers do?’ as we develop active and informed citizens.

Page 2: Tuesday 26 June Parent/Teacher/Student Conferenceattend this free evening where Andrew will be talking about building resilience and how you can help develop resilience in your child

Principal’s message continues: Teachers at MPS know every student as a learner and a person. We acknowledge that children

want a teacher that is fair and cares and we are focussed on developing teacher-student

relationships, empowering students and building school pride.

Our goal is to develop leadership and teacher capacity so that we can provide the students in our

care with the best possible education. Mulgrave continues to invest heavily in staff professional

learning, as we need to be role models as lifelong learners and this in turn improves the quality of our

practice.

Along with revisiting elements of the FISO (the Framework for Improving Student Outcomes) model,

the conference also saw the release of the Literacy and Numeracy Strategy Phase 2, with the latest

update maintaining the implementation focus on improving primary literacy, while also providing

resources and professional learning to support the teaching and learning of primary numeracy, and

secondary numeracy and literacy.

Literacy and numeracy skills lay the foundations for success in learning and success in life. Our aim is

to make best practice common practice and to continue to upscale teachers to reduce any

variation of practice. In short, a quality teacher in every classroom delivering a consistent program.

Asset Management Plan 1

Last week, the school council approved the Asset Management Plan, which is the first stage of the

process of building our new stadium. Over the next 5 weeks, the Victorian School Building Authority

(VSBA) and Regional staff will assess the plan and put in place a project team to lead the planning

and delivery of the project. The team will include representatives from the VSBA, the region and the

school. Mr Hattwell, our School Council President Mr. Ed Meszaros and I will then begin working with

the architects to fine tune the proposal and set out clear timelines for the planning and construction

phases.

Staff Car Park

Please ensure parents do not use the staff car park at school-time drop off and pick-up times. Could

parents also be mindful not to block the surrounding driveways, children’s crossing and to observe

the street parking signs.

Charles Spicer - Principal

Parent-Teacher-Student conversations will be held on Tuesday June 26th between 12:30pm and 7.30pm.

Each meeting has an allocation of 15 minutes. If a longer meeting is required, alternative arrangements

will need to be made. The afternoon session will run from 12.30pm to 5.15pm and the evening session will

be from 6.00pm to 7.30pm.

We have arranged the conference times in this way so that we can have true 3-way conversations with

parents, students and teachers. As such, it is an attendance requirement for each child to be present

during the appointment.

There will not be classes running on the day and the school will only be open for the appointments.

Outside school hours care will be available on the day, subject to a minimum of 12 bookings. Please

contact Extend direct if you wish to make a booking. You can contact Extend directly at [email protected] or 9427 7311

Please use the following link to book your interview time.

You can return to www.schoolinterviews.com.au at any time, and change your meetings - until the

bookings close on Monday 25th June at 4.00pm.

Have you ever stopped to think about what a

blessing it is to be a good thinker? Now I’m not

necessarily talking about

being a genius or intellectually gifted. I’m mostly

referring to being able to use good

problem-solving skills and good old-fashioned

common sense.

As this world becomes ever more complex and temptation-laden, it becomes more and

more important that we teach our kids how to build their mental muscles. Listed below are

some quick tips:

When your kids ask you for help with something, encourage them to try a bit longer before you jump in to help them. The only way to really learn good thinking skills is by

having to figure out some things on your own.

Ask them as many questions as possible. Examples include, “What else might you try?

What have you seen other people do to solve this problem? What would happen if you

tried_________? Where might you learn how to do that? Is that something you could

learn about in a book, by asking someone, or by looking on the internet?”

Allow them to mess up. Too frequently, we step in and tell kids exactly what to do when

we worry that they might make a mistake. When the consequences are small, allow

them to blow it and learn. By: Dr. Charles Fay

Extend OSHC at Mulgrave Primary School

Hi Everyone,

I believe the long weekend has given everyone an opportunity to relax and energise themselves!

On the 5th of June we celebrated World Environmental day by involving children in a discussion on how

littering is affecting our world’s Wildlife and Ocean life. Further to our discussion, many children were

inspired and made lovely posters to make everyone aware of the impact of littering issues. We went

outside in a big group to do a big clean-up of the schoolyard. The children showed a keen interest and

did a fantastic job of cleaning all around the yard. In future, the children will be involve in these types of

projects for a continued awareness.

Apart from our big clean-up day, the children explored many interesting activities. In art and craft, they

experimented with variety of art techniques and created lovely pieces of art such as: Leaf Animals, Salt

Jelly Fish, Mini Beast, and Wood Craft Snail. We added Aboriginal art to our programing and loved mak-

ing beautiful Gecko pictures that are now displayed on the board.

In science, we experiment with unbreakable water plastic bags by penetrating a pencil through them.

We learnt how stretchy plastic can get and how the seals around a pencil prevent it from leaking. In

another experiment, we tried to make slime using different ingredients to find out what ingredients work

best. In our kitchen master chef made delicious soft pretzels, mouth-watering Lamingtons, Pizza, Veggie

roles and yummy pancakes for breakfast.

We also enjoyed music with our favourite Gilbert the Gecko last week on Wednesday. Besides these

activities we loved several physical activities such as; Dragon's tale, Guards and Soldiers, Tunnel ball,

Captains ball, Cricket, Silent ball, Parachute games and also many other activities like: Beat the Clock,

Dice games, dramatic play, puzzle solving, Eleventh, building with variety of construction material and

board games.

Next weeks activities are;

Monday 18th June: Abstract portrait / Dodge ball

Tuesday 19th June: Extend got Talent / Hula Hoop games

Wednesday 20th June: Indian and Tepee/ Abstract water colour Geometric

Thursday 21st June: Secret Maze / Zoo Keeper and Cheeky Monkeys

Friday 22nd June: Cooking - Berry Pancakes / Stuffed Parantha (Indian)

Kind regards

Meena
