May 23, 2017 A Message from the Principal – Have a Wonderful Summer! Dear Parents, What a spectacular night it was at Bollywood on Saturday evening at the SAS Spring Auction. Thank you seems such an inadequate way to express my deepest gratitude to our phenomenal parent community for the many hours of planning, preparation, setup, displaying, interacting, and cleanup that went into our Spring Auction fundraiser. The room was transformed into a Song of India paradise (it was impossible to tell that it was a gym!); our guests were welcomed and appreciated; the food was delicious; the drinks flowed freely; the auction items and the bidding for them were exciting; the drummer brought rhythm and flair and had everyone’s toes tapping. On behalf of the SAS community, I express our sincerest thanks to Chairpersons Rebecca Patel and Debbie Martin – and all those who assisted them – for their time and effort in making this event a memorable and exciting evening for everyone. And our gratitude to all those who attended the event and supported this fundraising effort. As with everything else at St. Anthony’s, it was all for the students! Thank you – thank you – thank you. Congratulations to our Kindergarten graduates! They participated in their graduation ceremony this morning, and they are ready to be mighty first graders next year! Here comes the Class of 2027! To quote the American composer George Gershwin, “Summertime, and the living is easy.” On behalf of the St. Anthony School community, I wish you and your family a relaxing and restful summer filled with rich experiences and special memories. Please encourage your children to continue reading over the summer, as good reading habits are a strong predictor of academic success in all subject areas. I am grateful for your partnership and support in all that we do at SAS to educate your child, as you are the primary educators of your children. The generous hearts and helping hands of our parent community are boundless, and we quite simply could not do what we do each day without that support. Thank you! My deepest gratitude to the dedicated and talented faculty and staff members of SAS; they touched the hearts of our students each day this year as Catholic educators who encourage, inspire, and care. It is a blessing to work with them in this vocation of Catholic education. Congratulations to the Class of 2017! They enjoy their graduation ceremony on Thursday afternoon. We send them off to high school with our blessings, prayers, and best wishes. God bless you and your family. Live, Jesus, in our hearts . . . forever. Susannah Nelson Principal

Dear Parents,

What a spectacular night it was at Bollywood on Saturday evening at the SAS Spring Auction.  Thank you seems

Welcome to Our New SAS Advisory Board Members! We are pleased to announce that the Bishop has approved the appointment of the following four SAS parents as members of the SAS Advisory School Board. Their terms of service will begin on July 1, and they will serve for three years. We are grateful for their willingness to donate their time and talent as a member of the Advisory School Board. Many thanks to Hillary Bell, SAS Advisory School Board member and Chair of the Nominating Committee, and the members of her committee for their work in presenting this slate of candidates to the Bishop for approval.

We bid a fond farewell and extend our deepest gratitude to Monica Baker, Doug Sampson, and Mike Chielpegian for their many years of dedicated service as Advisory School Board members.

Garrett Patricio: I am honored to serve on the St. Anthony’s School Advisory Board. Catholic education has been instrumental in my life, and I owe a debt of gratitude to those administrators, educators, and families willing to invest in the future of our parochial youth. I attended grammar school at Our Lady of Fatima School in Los Banos, received my B.A. in accounting from the University of San Diego, and earned my J.D. with an emphasis in taxation from Santa Clara University School of Law. I spent three years in the Mergers & Acquisitions practice of PricewaterhouseCoopers in San Francisco, two years at the Fresno law firm of Dietrich Glasrud Mallek & Aune, and the last ten years with my family farming company, Westside Produce. I am a licensed CPA and member in good standing with the State Bar of California. I have been married to my lovely wife, Ashley, for 14 years, and we are the proud parents of 10-year-old Taylor (4th grade), 8-year-old Peyton (2nd grade), and 2-year-old Bryce. I will do my best to ensure your children’s education is a priority and your concerns are heard.

Sissy Dalena Wood: I am honored to serve as a St. Anthony’s School Board member. My husband Jason and I have three daughters: Francesca (Class of 2016), Daniela (Class of 2018), and Gemma (Class of 2020). Francesca now attends San Joaquin Memorial High School. I also have eight nieces and nephews who attend St. Anthony’s School and three who are recent alumni. Catholic education has always been important to our family. In today’s social media and confusing secular world, I find it imperative that our children have a strong and solid foundation in their Catholic faith. At St. Anthony’s School we have an opportunity to incorporate our beliefs in every subject, grade, and classroom. I currently serve on: the Board of Directors at the Right to Life Central California; the Minister of Presence Guild supporting Catholic Charities; the Building Committee of Our Lady of Guadalupe, Bakersfield; and the Logistics Coordinator for the Sisters of the Immaculate Conception’s Haiti Mission, a new Catholic school educating over 700 students. I have also co-chaired the SAS Spring Auction and

served as a room parent, coach, and a Tail-Waggn’ tutor for the Kindergarten class. I am interested in continuing to build a strong and faith-filled education for ALL our children.

Katie Driskill: It would be an honor to serve on the Advisory School Board of St. Anthony's School. I currently have two sons at St. Anthony's; Jack is in third grade and Charlie is a kindergartener. Over the past four years, I have enjoyed getting involved in the school community, particularly volunteering weekly in the library and serving on the women's table committee for the Spring Auction. Prior to having children, I was a junior high teacher at St. Simon Catholic School in the Diocese of San Jose. The school was very similar to St. Anthony's, both double schools with strong Catholic identities, rigorous academics, and active parent communities who want the best education for their children. During my tenure, I served as the faculty liaison working closely with the parent representatives on their school board. I feel that I am in a unique position to serve St. Anthony's because I understand the needs of the faculty and administration as a Catholic school educator, but also can articulate the concerns and desires of the parent community. It is my hope to support the school community during this time of transition to maintain our strong Catholic identity, while remaining academically competitive with local public schools.

Joe Tabangcura: I am the parent of three children at St. Anthony’s: Lucas (6G), Sophia (1S), and Samantha (1S). I was fortunate to have parents who sent me to Catholic schools from kindergarten through high school. As a product of Catholic school education, I am a firm believer that getting a faith-based education during my formative years helped create the man I am today. My hope is that your children appreciate the gifts they are getting now and look back at their time at St. Anthony’s with the same fondness I do. I hope to bring the same passion I have as a parent to the Board.

Teacher Positions / Teacher Aides Needed for 2017-2018 School Year Positions as a Kindergarten teacher and an 8th grade language arts/math teacher, as well as teacher aides, are open at SAS for the upcoming school year. Summer Prayer

by Jim Manney

Father, Creator of all, thank You for summer!

Thank you for the warmth of the sun

and the increased daylight.

Thank You for the beauty I see all around me

and for the opportunity to be outside and enjoy Your creation.

Thank You for the increased time I have to be with my friends and family,

and for the more casual pace of the summer season.

Draw me closer to You this summer.

Teach me how I can pray

no matter where I am or what I am doing.

Warm my soul with the awareness of Your presence

and light my path with Your Word and Counsel.

As I enjoy Your creation, create in me

a pure heart and a hunger and a thirst for You.

Amen.
