Dear Student

Choosing where to continue your studies after Year 11 is an important decision. The next step in your education should be enjoyable, memorable and successful. It must equip you with the experience and qualifications to reach your ambitions. The gap between GCSE and A-Level is the widest academic gap there is - you will need to be resilient, proactive and positive but you will be well supported during your journey. I am thrilled that you are considering Tudor Grange Sixth Form. I hope that this booklet will answer your questions and help you to make an informed decision.

I am very proud of our Sixth Formers. They have created a friendly and exciting atmosphere. They consistently live up to the Academy’s high expectations, acting as positive members of the Academy community and superb role models for younger students.

As a Sixth Former you will be part of this lively environment. You will be an active member of the Academy, inspiring younger students. You will work hard at subjects that you enjoy and you will benefit from superb teaching and individualised support. Please contact me if you have any questions about Tudor Grange Sixth Form. I look forward to welcoming you here next year.

Yours faithfully,

Ashley RoachDirector of Post - 16 Studies

Welcome to Tudor Grange Academy Sixth Form

Ofsted reported “teaching in the Sixth Form is never less than good and usually better and teachers have secure subject knowledge and an enthusiasm for their subjects, which they pass on to students. Teachers plan lessons that engage and motivate students. All students benefit from effective careers advice and guidance. As a result, the majority of students move on to universities, further education, apprenticeships or employment.”

“My time in Sixth Form has really opened my eyes to the world around me. The support I have been given in my subjects has been amazing, the small class sizes have really benefited me and helped me achieve the best results possible. Being involved in the mentoring programme has allowed me to give something back to the school by helping the younger students.”

We recognise that our job is to ensure you have the best possible chance of achieving your ambitions. When you leave us you will have the qualifications, the skills and the experience necessary to successfully move on to the next stage of your life. You will also leave us with pleasant memories of a wonderful two years working as part of our supportive and welcoming community.

Good qualifications open doors to different opportunities. Tudor Grange students benefit from excellent teaching and from small groups, with an average Year 12 class size of 10 students. These small groups mean that students work closely with teachers who are able to effectively target their individual needs. That is why our most recent Ofsted report notes that “teaching in the Sixth Form is never less than good and usually better.”

We want to prepare our students for the world of work. To this end students are required to register at 08.35 every day. We start each morning with Sixth Form briefing and also deliver our life skills programme at this time. Level 3 study is not easy. Whether this is A-Level or BTEC they require a huge amount of work. We support our students with supervised study and feel the balance between freedom and supervision is right. As a parent you are assured that the students are in lessons and

making progress with termly assessments and reports available on the Parent Portal.

We are also justifiably proud of the support we offer our Sixth Formers outside of their lessons.Every department ensures extra support is available for any student who feels they need it. This level of support is similar to the tutorial method used by top universities and works best when students have read around the subject being taught.

Excellent qualifications are necessary but not sufficient for success in the modern world. Sixth Form staff also support our students in discovering opportunities for volunteering and work experience. Our school setting provides unique opportunities to gain new experiences and students enjoy the rewarding experience of supporting the younger members of the Academy. In addition to regular assistance from the Sixth Form team, all students receive additional one-to-one mentoring when applying for universities or completing their job or apprenticeship applications. They are further supported by regular visits from universities and local employers to provide expert guidance. Together, this enrichment programme ensures that students have the knowledge and ability to get the most out of their qualifications. Ofsted

reported that “all students benefit from effective careers advice and guidance. As a result, the majority of students move on to universities, further eductation, apprenticeships or employment.”

The Sixth Form at Tudor Grange is literally at the centre of the school and we seek students who embrace hard work, recognise that setbacks often provide greater learning opportunities and embrace new challenges. Students benefit from state-of-the-art facilities and resources. Our Sixth Formers have their own Sixth Form Centre, café and a dedicated classroom for silent study. We respect the fact that our Sixth Formers are young adults and they are able to decide the best way to use their independent study periods: students are able to take study leave at home in the afternoon if they wish. In turn, our students conduct themselves as adults in and around the academy site, acting as role models and inspiration to the next generation of students.

What course shall I choose?Post-16 study offers young people a chance to focus on subjects about which they are passionate. We offer a wide range of courses and subjects because we know that our students have a wide range of interests. All of our courses can be combined in different ways so that each student ends up with a set of qualifications and skills that will help them to realise their individual ambitions.

All students who apply will meet with a member of the Sixth Form team to discuss their options. We will help you to think about your long and short term ambitions so that you can be sure you have made the right choice. We will also talk about each subject you have chosen so that you have confidence that you will both enjoy and achieve. In our experience, students are most successful when they choose courses in which they have a genuine interest.

A-Levels and BTECs Students completing BTECs will have very different experiences to students studying A-levels. BTECs are assessed mostly through coursework with a small exam element and will normally combine practical tasks with extended writing. A-levels are assessed primarily through examinations. Neither option is better and neither is easier, but students will find that one type of qualification will suit them more than the other and they should make their choices based on the type of learning they prefer and the qualifications that best suit their chosen destinations. Students who find that they have been successful in examinations and who enjoy examining and debating ideas and arguments in depth and at length should consider A-levels. A-levels provide access to academic degrees at all universities because they help students to develop their extended writing, analytical and critical thinking skills. The BTEC route allows you to complete elements of the course throughout the two years and carries UCAS points for entry to university. Students can study a mixture of A-Level and BTEC courses as long as they have met the entry requirements for each subject.

The A-Level and BTEC routes give students a wealth of transferable skills that make them good candidates for a variety of different pathways. Both types of Level 3 courses offer routes into university, apprenticeship and employment.

Entry Requirements3 x A Levels:Eight GCSE’s at grade 9-5. Maths and English at grade 5 or above.

4 x A levels:Eight GCSE’s at grade 9 - 8.

Certain subjects will require a particular grade within that subject area. Please refer to each subject’s entry requirements.

BTEC:Five GCSE’s at grade 9-4 including Maths and English at Grade 5 or above.

Oxbridge If you are thinking of applying to Oxford or Cambridge University, and most courses in medicine, veterinary medicine/science and dentistry you will need to apply via UCAS on “early entry”. Students wishing to apply join our Scholar programme. On this programme they receive expert advice and guidance so as to give them the best possible chance of gaining a place. We also ensure students are fully informed about the stages and demands of the process; that they have the information they need to make good decisions about their university or college and that they have the guidance they need to prepare themselves for all aspects of the application process, such as testing and interviews. Students

will also receive 1:1 support from our own applications advisor from Oriel College Oxford. Opportunities are available to students to attend Open Days at Oxford and Cambridge.

Ultimately the success of a student’s application will depend on the fit between them and the university and how they fare against the competition, but what we can do is fully support all of our students and help them prepare as effectively as possible.

Core Mathematics AS Level

Why study core mathematics?

Core mathematics is the perfect course for students looking to retain, deepen and extend their knowledge and skills from GCSE, but are not wishing to study A-level mathematics. At the end of the two year course, students will have completed a level 3 qualification which is equivalent to an AS level.

The course has been specifically developed to equip students with transferable, mathematical skills which will support in the workplace or in a wide range of subjects. There is a sharp focus on problem-solving and using and applying mathematics to solve problems relevant to students’ everyday lives. This includes financial applications of mathematics as well as further statistical ideas that can support work in other subjects such as psychology, business studies, geography, sociology, economics and biology. Consequently, core mathematics would be an ideal qualification to complement students’ three main A-levels.

It would also be a fantastic addition for students studying more essay-based subjects as it shows a well-rounded student.

Where will this lead?

Universities have welcomed the core mathematics qualification as students will be better equipped with the mathematical skills that are required for many degree courses. In fact, over 40 universities this year made a statement in support, and it was publicly endorsed by the Russell Group of research-intensive universities.

Mathematics qualifications look impressive on any CV and this extra qualification will help to stand out to employers.

How will I be assessed?

The qualification is assessed at the end of Year 13, after two years of studying the course. Students will sit two equally weighted exam papers, each lasting 1 hour 30 minutes, which will make up their overall grade.

What will I be learning about?

The primary focus is on using and applying mathematics and statistics to address authentic problems and real-life scenarios, drawn from study, work and life, with a strong emphasis on problem-solving.

What are the entry requirements?

Eight grade 9-5 at GCSE level or equivalent, including a grade 5 in mathematics.

English Literature A-Level

Why study English literature?

A-Level English literature is an ideal choice for anyone who loves reading and is interested in the big questions affecting human existence. It is also a highly respected A-Level that can be instrumental in helping students gain university places in a variety of subjects, not just English. Students will gain a great deal of academic prowess through a subject that promotes the development of transferable skills.

English students are taught to think analytically, consider different interpretations and listen and respond to one another sensitively in preparation for the seminar-style environment they are likely to find at university. One of the most important skills they learn is how to write coherently and critically. This is an essential skill that will aid them in their other subjects and is invaluable in higher education and the world of employment.

Where will this lead?

As well as being a respected A-Level in its own right, the study of English literature could lead to careers in various industries including: journalism, advertising, broadcast media and, of course, teaching.

How will I be assessed?

English literature A-Level is assessed through a combination of examinations and non-exam assessment, which will be an independently produced response comparing two texts of the individual student’s choice.

What will I be learning about?

We follow the new specification for the AQA English literature A-Level syllabus and study a variety of texts from different areas of the literary canon.

In year one students will cover a range of literature from different genres under the theme of love through the ages. This will include watching, reading and discussing Othello by Shakespeare, The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald and poetry by pre-1900 writers such as Blake, Donne, Hardy, Keats and Marvell.

In year two students will progress to explore texts in the context of World War 1 and its aftermath by, again, exploring a range of genres. Texts will include Birdsong by Sebastian Faulks and Journey’s End by R.C. Sherriff.

“Most people are other people. Their thoughts are someone else’s opinions, their lives a mimicry, their passions a quotation.”

Oscar Wilde

What are the entry requirements?

Eight grade 9-5 at GCSE level or equivalent, including a minimum of level 6 must be achieved in English literature or language.

English Literature and Language A-Level

Why study English Literature and Language?

Words create worlds, both in literature and elsewhere.

Engaging creatively and critically with a wide range of texts, this course allows candidates to explore the similarities and differences between prose, poetry and drama but also beyond this to non-fiction texts that do not get as much attention: personal letters, spontaneous speech, multimedia texts.

Students also develop skills not only as interpreters of language but also producers by creating texts themselves and critically reflecting on their own processes of production.

How will I be assessed?

The qualification is assessed by examination at the end of year 13.

Where will this lead?

This course can develop invaluable skills for when you enter the world of work: vital communication, analytical and critical thinking skills but also enable you to express yourself with consideration and precision. Most students who study English Language and Literature go on to study similar courses at university. There are a variety of career pathways such as law, journalism, advertising, publishing and teaching.

What will I be learning about?

The different components of the course include:

• ‘Telling Stories’ is exam assessed and focuses on how and why stories are told, the ways in which writers and speakers present stories, and how language choices help to shape the representations of different worlds and perspectives.

• ‘Exploring Conflict’ is also exam assessed and retains this focus on language choices but looks at how these choices help to construct ideas of conflict between people, and between people and their societies. What students love about this component of the course is the opportunity for creative writing. You will be able to experiment with creating different types of fiction and nonfiction texts, to develop and critically evaluate your personal writing voice.

• ‘Making Connections’ is a personal investigation of 2,500 – 3,000 words that focuses on language use in different types of text and requires students to make active connections between a literary text and some non-literary material: a coherent synoptic component to draw students’ developed learning together.

What are the entry requirements?

Eight grade 9-5 at GCSE level or equivalent, including a minimum of level 6 must be achieved in English literature or language.

History A-Level

Why study history?

The purpose of historical inquiry is not simply to present facts but to search for an interpretation of the past. It is commonly acknowledged that an understanding of the past is fundamental to an understanding of the present.

History is essential to the traditional objectives of the liberal arts: the quest for wisdom and virtue. Most importantly, history is both fascinating and fun! History combines the excitement of exploration and discovery with the sense of reward born of successfully confronting and making sense of complex and challenging problems.

How will I be assessed?

With examination board OCR, the A-Level will be assessed with three exams weighting 25% (Unit 1), 15% (Unit 2) and 40% (Unit 3). The final 20% will be a piece of coursework (Unit 4) that is marked by your teachers.

Where will this lead?

A-Level history encourages students to think, argue, discuss, communicate and challenge. It is accepted by higher education institutions to be a challenging discipline and is favourably looked upon.

History acts as a platform for careers in law, politics, civil service, the media, management and education amongst many others. For this reason, it is identified by the prestigious Russell Group of universities as a “facilitating subject”, which supports students in applications to a wide range of degrees.

What will I be learning about?

You will explore four different components; a British period study on the Late Tudors, a thematic study on Civil Rights in the USA 1865-1992 and Russia 1894-1941 for a non-British period study as well as a 3,000-4,000 word coursework unit.

What are the entry requirements?

What are the entry requirements?

Eight grade 9-5 at GCSE level or equivalent. In addition you will need a minimum of a level 7 in mathematics.

What will I be learning about?

Year one will consist of pure mathematics; covering algebra, geometry and calculus.

You will also study applied mathematics, through statistics and mechanics.

These topics will then be explored further during the second year of the course.

Why study mathematics?

Did you know that people with mathematics qualifications have some of the highest employment rates and those with A-Level mathematics earn on average 10% more than those without: a difference of around £240,000 over an average life time? Alongside this a recent study showed that the top three jobs in terms of income and other factors had a common element of mathematics.

Mathematics is the science of problem solving. It is a fundamental part of human thought and logic; and integral to attempts at understanding the world and ourselves. Mathematics provides the ultimate way of building mental discipline, encouraging logical reasoning and mental rigour. In addition, mathematical knowledge plays a crucial role in understanding the contents of other school subjects such as science, social studies, and even music and art. If you have a flare for mathematics, come and join our team of experienced mathematicians at Tudor Grange Academy Worcester!

How will I be assessed?

Assessment is entirely through examinations, of which there are three at the end of the second year.

Where will this lead?

A-Level mathematics is very highly regarded by universities and employers, and complements studies in chemistry, biology, physics, geography, ICT, business and economics. Students with mathematics A-Level have demonstrated that they have strong problem solving and reasoning skills and they can also think logically.

Mathematicians can use their skill and knowledge in any career, and in particular medicine, sciences, accountancy, actuarial science, business, banking, computing, engineering, architecture, meteorology and teaching.
