From the PresidentA time for joy, a time for tears, a time

for laughter, a time for sorrow, a time to share with others, a time to be alone with our thoughts. Holidays can mean so many different things to each of us, depending on the events. Stan and I wish for all of you a joyous and happy season of fun and laughter.

Remember to join us for our Hanuk-kah Party on December 2nd at the “J.” We should have a great time together enjoying the lakes and shopping at the boutique. I hope many of you intend to join us at my home on Monday, December 24, for our final fund-raiser for 2012. We will enjoy a full meal and have some much needed socializing, all while raising funds for Sustaining the Mind. Make your reservations today for both of these events as described on pages 1 and 3.

Holidays are a time for passing on oral traditions and reading fabulous stories about our faith. Whether you are Christian, Jewish, or Muslim, the oral traditions of your families of years past are enjoyable to share with others. Many such traditions find there way into written com-mentary regarding our faiths. How many times I have had our grandsons on my lap and told them about their great-grandmothers and great-grandfathers. To travel back further in time, we have spoken about the boats they must have come on to the American shore line. We travel in time about wars (somehow, boys love when you speak about war) and peace and about observing the Sabbath and about holidays. Why we do certain things as opposed to not doing something else. Now that they are ages 7 and 3, this year it is all about what our grandchildren want for Hanukkah. Somehow they will learn to share what gifts they receive and learn to count their blessings instead of gelt. I rest assured Pop will hand out gold coins along with the chocolate stuff they play games with and they seem to enjoy eating before the game is over.

For all of us Thanksgiving is a time to give thanks and to share with others. We wish all of you well and much happiness.

Sheila Rothenberg and Bob were born and bred in Brooklyn, New York, and went to the same high school — Erasmus Hall — but didn’t meet until they both worked at the Workmen’s Circle resort dining room in upstate New York. It wasn’t love at first sight, but they each had inclinations toward magazine and book writing, and that eventually brought them together. They were married in 1958.

Bob went on to become publisher of USA TODAY maga-zine. At age 40 and by then the mother of three, Sheila, with Bob’s encouraging support, achieved a long-held ambition, that of obtaining a college degree. She says it was a fas-cinating experience to be a freshman at Brooklyn College and firmly believes that, as a mature adult, yet one with a young heart, she had a better grasp on “what she wanted to be when she grew up” than many of her classmates — one of whom happened to be a kid she once baby-sat. Upon graduation, Sheila found her way into children’s book publishing via the Junior Literary Guild owned by Double-day Dell (now a division of Random House), eventually becoming Editorial Director.

When close friends moved to Tucson, the Rothenbergs came to visit and thought they could never live among the area’s stark mountains. They were used to the tangy salt air of Howard Beach, New York. Then, in 2001, they arrived in Tucson for a wedding at Skyline Country Club, met a lot of very congenial Tucsonans, learned about all the cultural aspects Tucson offers, spent time “window shopping” houses in the Foothills, got a splendid taste of what retire-ment could be like here, and next thing they knew, they had a contract for a house yet to be built. In 2003, amidst 108-degree temperatures and with Mt. Lemmon ablaze, they hitched up the wagon and headed west.

A major factor in Sheila’s new life is BUNWC, where she found the book discussion group for which she had been searching, people with whom she could schmooze, and activities that were fun and challenging while aiding a worthwhile cause.

Although always advised by Bob “never to volunteer,” Sheila heeded the call to head up the 2007 Book & Au-thor Luncheon Committee. “Talk about challenging!” she laughingly said. Since then, she has been our chair of author selection, the most difficult and rewarding job. She makes our Book & Author events the tops and the chapter is so grateful. She hopes to see many Brandeis members and their guests on March 6 and7, 2012, for this year’s Soirée and Luncheon.

What’s New at Brandeis University in Waltham?

Stuart Altman of Brandeis University to Lead New Health Policy Commission

Stuart Altman, professor of national health policy at Brandeis University, will chair the new Massachusetts state board charged with setting health care spending goals and tracking providers’ progress toward reducing costs.

The 11-member Health Policy Commission board was created under the state health cost-control law that passed this past summer. The measure aims to reduce health spend-ing by limiting its increase to the annual growth of the overall state economy.

Altman, a health economist in Brandeis’s Heller School for Social Policy and Management, has been working on the issue of health care costs for four decades. He said he will drop his position as a board member at Tufts Medical Center and non-paying positions in the state, but will keep his posts on hospital and health plan boards out of state, including some that pay him.

Altman said he accepted the role of chairman because he believes the state has an unprecedented opportunity. Time and again, state and national efforts to rein in health care costs have failed, he said. “It works for awhile and then it blows up. Then health care spending starts growing at much faster rates,” he said. “I’m cautiously optimistic that we can make it work here in Massachusetts and that eventually we will be the model for the rest of the country, because no other state is even trying. The federal government isn’t trying. So, we’re all by ourselves.”
