House TB Elimination Caucus – now has 38 members! Including 8 Republicans

House bilateral tuberculosis letter - This bipartisan letter asked for $400 million for global tuberculosis eradication efforts and was led by Representatives Eliot Engel (D-NY), Gene Green (D-TX), Don Young (R-AK). It got a total of 49 SIGNERS!

House Appropriations Committee action, 2015 – kept USAID TB funding at current level of $236 million

Senate:

Senate Drug Resistant Tuberculosis letter -- This letter urged the President to launch his Action Plan on Drug Resistant TB and request the needed resources. It got a total of 10 SIGNERS: Sherrod Brown (D-OH), Barbara Mikulski (D-MD), Patty Murray (D-WA), Barbara Boxer (D-CA), Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI), Chis Coons (D-DE), Mazie Hirono (D-HI) Edward Markey (D-MA), Brian Schatz (D-HI), Robert Menendez (D-NJ)

· USAID builds capacity for community involvement and patient-centered approaches, making it easier for patients to get diagnosed and treated.

· USAID provides technical support and assists in the development of annual TB country plans -- laying the basis for success of Global Fund-backed programs.

· U.S. support strengthens health systems and laboratories in affected countries. USAID helps countries adopt the latest in diagnostics, building their capacity to promptly diagnose and treat cases.

· Lowering costs: USAID has helped lower medication costs for drug resistant TB by as much as 32 percent through its contribution to the Global Drug Facility.

· Research that develops better MDR TB regimens that are faster and less toxic.
