TTTTHEHEHEHE WWWWARMARMARMARM HHHHEARTEARTEARTEART THE NEWSLETTER OF ALDERSGATE UNITED METHODIST CHURCH
Aldersgate Church is a caring and affirming Christ-centered fellowship, lay-led and community focused.
FROM PASTOR RANDY
Community. The word has been on my mind a lot over the past ten days. What does it mean to be part of community? Over the past ten days I have been impressed with the community of Shelby, NC. Following Officer Tim Brackeen’s shooting, the community rallied around him and his family. The community rallied once again follow-ing his death. The community lined the roads when his body returned to Shelby. The community gathered at the town square for a prayer vigil. The community filled Keeter Stadium to pay last respects and praise God’s love and faithfulness. The community lined the streets of Shelby for the funeral procession. As Gina and I stood on the street watching the never-ending procession of vehicles, I looked around, saw community, shed tears, and thought to myself, “Thank you God for these people, and thank you for allowing me the opportunity to serve in this community.” Nobel Laureate, Desmond Tutu, often talks about the importance of community. Ubuntu is a word from his native language and it basically means “a person is a person through other persons.” For Tutu ubuntu is the essence of being human. It is the idea that my humanity is caught up and bound up inextricably with yours. Ubuntu claims that I am because I belong. Christianity has a lot to say about community. The Greek word for church is ekklesia, which means “call out” or “call together.” The church is gathered community. Ekklesia (or in the East kyriakon) is used to describe a church building and is translated as “of the Lord.” We are literally the called-together people of the Lord.
The Bible is full of references to community. Community is where we find communion with God, offer mutual assistance of goods, support one another, draw strength from one another, mourn with one another, and celebrate with one another.
I thank God that I am part of the communities called Aldersgate UMC and Shelby, NC. I thank God that I not alone in this life. I thank God that our lives are intertwined with one another. I thank God for each one of you.
May God’s blessings be poured out on us, may the love of Christ unite us, and may the Holy Spirit lead us in building strong bonds within all our communities. All in, Randy

The meal and the meeting conclude by 7:00 P.M. Come be a part of this fun-loving group of Christian men.

Did you know that many seniors in Cleveland County are hungry? If you have an interest in helping them, we encourage you to support the Apple Butter Festival on Saturday, October 15th. Aldersgate United Methodist Women are working to raise $6,000 to support senior nutritional programs at the Neil Senior Center and through international programs. So, when you purchase apple butter, food, or other items at the event, or when you bid on our beautiful gift baskets, you will be helping to feed seniors.
Apple Butter Festival Update…
Many thanks for all your support for the upcoming second Apple Butter festival. It couldn’t happen without each of you! Along with the return of great things from last year; The Schiele Museum exhibit, storytelling, the bouncey house and antique cars, will be more fritters and more apple butter! New this year will be vendors offering pottery, handmade wooden creations, and candles. Our crafters will offer new and exciting items and of course there will be baskets to bid on! And…women of the church are invited to make your favorite apple pie(s), bring it/them that morning and enter the apple pie contest. Judges will hand out blue ribbons for the best and then we will sell the pieces à la mode!
So come listen to the music which this year includes Greg Tillman’s band “Yesterday” along with Dale Brittain, folksinger and songwriter from Gastonia as well as the returning favorites Black Coffee Trio and Haggard Dolly. Wander over to the Pickin’ Tent and listen or join in for a tune or two. (Dean Jenks and friends will be jamming over there.) Stop off at the UMM food tent and enjoy hamburgers and hot dogs. Then get some cotton candy, homemade cookies or apple pie à la mode !
So come early, stay late, bring a chair and let down your hair!

FROM THE ALDERSGATE PLAYSCHOOL
Hello Aldersgate family!
On Friday, September 16th, children and teachers from the playschool gathered for a time of song and prayer in the Aldersgate Prayer Garden to pay their respects to fallen police officer, Tim Brackeen. Prayers were also lifted and blue balloons were released for all police officers, firemen, medics, doctors, and nurses.
Thank you so much for all the baby wipes you donated during the month of September! We really needed them.
In October we would like to receive donations of 8.5 X 11 copy paper. We can use white and/or any colors you would like to contribute. Also needed are plastic food service-type gloves. (We are required to wear the gloves when changing diapers.)
As always, we truly appreciate all you do to support the playschool!
