A LEVEL AND GCSE RESULTS 2014 Simon Knight, Headteacher, said: “i am very proud of the achievements of our A-level and GCSE students. The grades reflect very positively on the sustained hard work of the students, the support provided by their parents and the commitment of staff at the school. we always expected this to be a challenging year and it has proved to be so. we were quietly optimistic, but the late changes imposed by the Government have had a detrimental impact on attainment at GCSE. However, we are confident that with the changes we have introduced we will see an improvement next year. i am still proud of the efforts of our staff and our students who continue to demonstrate a positive approach to their studies.

A Level Results: overall pass rate 99.5%, A* – C grades 67%

GCSE Results: Students achieving five or more A* – C grades to 62%, 57% A* – C including Maths and English.

Top scoring students included a 15-year-old who is on his way to being the next big thing in product design. Alex williams, of Shalford, scored an A grade at GCSE product design when he was in Year 9 and today picked up an A grade in the same subject at AS-level from his Year 10 studies. Alex said, “i want to become a mechanical engineer so product design is a hobby of mine. i have already designed a set of Bluetooth portable speakers that my mum uses every day and a remote controlled helicopter with cameras on. it’s good to get my qualifications out the way early.”

ART AND DESiGN Since last term the Department has been busy, with our end of term Exhibition for Year 11 GCSE, A Level Art and Photography, which took place on July 10th, we also exhibited A Level Art in the Countess of warwick Show this year.

Once again, we had a huge response from lower school students to the Dunmow carnival competition, based on the theme of films. Congratulations to Nicole fernandes (8DA) who was the overall winner. Her colourful design was featured on the front cover of the carnival programme. Congratulations also go to Scott williamson (7CM), formerly of Great Easton Primary School, who was a runner-up.

we welcomed art teacher Tara Keens who joined us in September, and Jo Porter, a former HRS student, who is training to be an art teacher on the SCiTT programme.

Jo has also been helping Hayley Ellis in running an after school art club which is very popular, two of her helpers, Max Turner and Callum fullerton, received Jack Petchey awards for their efforts and the money has been used to purchase lots of art supplies for the club.

Our most recent community involvement has been with “The Big Draw” which took place in Dunmow at half term; students from Year 8 provided colourful bug pictures that were on display in Dunmow library.

DRAMA AND MEDiA

This term in A Level Drama we have been studying two plays: ‘Equus’ and ‘Our Country’s Good’. we have explored their contrasting contexts and how that may have had an effect on the plot or outcome of the play. in addition, we have used several explorative strategies such as Hot Seating and whole Class Drama to immerse ourselves fully into the characters. These have helped us to gain a deeper understanding of them; expanding our knowledge of the play. we have also analysed two key Drama practitioners and the long lasting effect they have had over Theatre.

Luke Birch, Year 12 student

Throughout this term, Year 11 Drama students have been exploring the play text ‘Lord of the flies’ and the theme of Mods and Rockers for their Unit 1 and 2 exams. we have used an array of explorative strategies. for example a whole class drama of the 1960s Brighton riots. it has been great to create characters that have been very different from us. we have delved deeper into these and i now see things in a different light.

Kayleigh Robertson, Year 11

During the A2 Media course, we have been reflecting on and applying the key concepts. we have been reviewing our previous grades, setting smart targets to improve our overall writing standard and have completed a number of practise papers. we have also looked at the films ‘Romeo and Juliet’ and ‘Moulin Rouge’ analysing the contrast between love and death and their use of symbolism.

Ellis Merchant, Year 13

in Year 11 Media, we have been learning about institutions such as Newscorp and how some companies go too far for profit. we have been looking more in depth about what the media industry is all about power, influence and hegemony. we have also just started a module on Copyright and how it affects creative artists; how illegally downloading music takes money away from that media platform. we are now making two products to raise awareness of copyright and how it affects everyone. if people keep committing these crimes then musicians will have to stop writing songs, Directors will have to stop filming and gaming companies will have to shut down – no matter how popular they are!

Louise Wilson, Year 11

Since September in BTEC Performing Arts, i have learnt about lighting, dancing, costume, acting, scenery and sound. i know lots about different equipment. we use speakers, microphones and a mixing desk. Lighting is my favourite subject because it is creative. we use a lighting board, gels and barn doors. we have designed costumes for different characters and created set designs that create atmosphere. Performing Arts is fun and enjoyable.

FACULTY NEWS THE HELENA ROMANES SCHOOL

MUSiCMusical students have been putting on performances in their lunch break each term since January 2013. The events have become so popular, we had so much interest from local Primary School children and residents, they have now moved from the music classroom into the school’s main hall. in the future, we hope people will make a donation to the music department to come and watch the shows. The concerts give an opportunity to demonstrate the talents of the students through our choir, classical music and pop music performances. we hope the concerts will not only give our musicians and singers more confidence, but also encourage other students around the school, and from the Primary Schools, to take up music. The concerts involve students from Year 7 to 13. The term’s work will culminate in an evening Christmas concert in December.

The Braintree based artist performed to Year 7 students in the Hall, some of whom were invited onto the stage to join in with singing and dancing. There were Question and Answer sessions between songs and a meet and greet session at the end when Jessica signed autographs.

COMMUNITY NEWS THE HELENA ROMANES SCHOOL

STUDENT VOiCEUnder the new chairmanship of Skye wilson and Beth Birss, Student Voice continues to progress in its key role within HRS. in July, Mayor Jonathon Cadwallader opened the new Student Voice cabin. The cabin has been used continuously since the opening. Peer mentors are in the room most lunchtimes, where students can come and have a chat or play on board games or on the Nintendo wii to build friendships. The cabin is used for counselling sessions and is an improved environment for these sessions to take place. Student Voice now holds their meetings in here every friday week B.

This term our student parliament met the Mayor and assisted with ideas on his project of how we could make Great Dunmow a better environment for 11-16 year olds. After further discussions, we came out with the main idea of improving the recreation ground in the town. ideas included a sweet shack, better skateboarding facilities and a running track. we look forward to supporting the Mayor with his developments.

During the parliament, we also discussed what we could do to improve the environment for students at HRS. The main concerns raised were the toilets and more water fountains. Student Voice is liaising with the PTA and will be looking to see if we can develop these ideas.

we also discussed what makes a great teacher. There are many great teachers at HRS and the students came up with a number of attributes of the staff at the school. Student Voice will share this with staff in a leaflet to show

the teachers what the students at HRS think make up a great teacher.

At this year’s open morning, innes fullerton met a number of prospective students and explained about the role of Student Voice within the school.

Later in October, our Student Voice was invited to attend the Uttlesford Community forum along with forest Hall School. The event was focusing on education and explaining the role of student council’s in school and to share with the local community. Our representatives explained what Student Voice do within school and the recent link up with the Dunmow Mayor.

The school’s annual sponsored walk has been postponed whilst the possibility of a new route or how we safely cross the new ring road with 1400 students is discussed. After consulting with all form groups via a questionnaire the vast majority of the school explained that they loved the day and wanted it to continue. we have now proposed a new date of friday 13th March - Comic Relief Day.

Mr T James, Student Voice Co-ordinator

RAiNBOwS’ fESTiVAL ViSiT TO HRSAn evening of colour and experiments was enjoyed by 1st Barnston Rainbows when the group of four to seven-year-olds came to investigate the science of colour for their festival badge. They enjoyed experiments including colouring in a circular card in three colours before spinning it and seeing the colours change, adding drops of food colouring to milk before adding washing-up liquid and seeing the colours disperse, as well as putting green and red cellophane over a torch to prove all colours come from white. They also drew a brown spot on filter paper, rested it over a beaker of water and watched as several colours spread out to show how many colours make one. finally, a finale of coloured flames was produced by Science teacher Ben Amos spraying chemicals at a Bunsen burner. Susan Sarjeant, Rainbow leader and HRS Learning Support Assistant, said, “The Rainbows enjoyed all the activities and are keen to visit HRS again. The fantastic finale of all the colours of the rainbow was

spectacular and gave the girls an educational and fun evening.”

THE HELENA ROMANES SCHOOL COMMUNITY NEWS

E-SAfETY

Social media savvy Year 9 students spread the e-safety message

HRS PTA AND fRiENDSThe PTA’s role is to help raise funds for enrichment of our School and to co-ordinate activities for school parents, families and the local community. it aims to bring together parents, teachers and others to raise money and to support the school. it provides an opportunity for everyone to work together towards a common goal raising vital funds for the school to buy items not covered by the school budget.

The PTA has just approved the purchase of a portable amplifier with microphone and docking station. This will be available for all faculties to use for outdoor events. The PTA will be supporting the Music Concert in December by serving refreshments. They will also

be serving refreshments at the ‘High School Musical’ production in January. Plans for the New Year include a quiz night to raise funds for the Year 11 prom.

The PTA is always happy to welcome new volunteers who would like to dedicate some of their time. That could be sparing an hour or two to help at an event or you may wish to join the PTfA committee, new members are always welcome. Remember, a little often goes a long way. The school will benefit tremendously from the additional funds and it is a great way to meet other parents and to be more involved in school life. if you are interested, please contact Tracey fullerton on [email protected].

A group of Year 9 students are taking responsibility for ensuring the safety of their peers using social media. As mobile conversation app Snapchat hits the headlines for allegations of leaked private photos, the school has made it a priority to protect its children. The students are producing a guide to help keep other children safe, particularly those in younger year groups. The e-safety team of 13-year-olds Connie Rose, Lily Bassett, Jeanri Burger, Emily Dewar and Lois Miller with Sophie Bunker, 14, volunteered to get involved after an assembly at school. Connie said, “we are having meetings every week to discuss our ideas and to produce a presentation to show to younger year groups. The younger ones particularly

do put their personal details on sites such as instagram and Snapchat without realising who can access it. we will also look at other social media safety.”

The students are the experts and know everything about the security settings and the problems that can occur. The older generation do not use these social media apps so do not really know how they work. Therefore, the students are the ideal people to raise awareness of e-safety and make it relevant and current.

SIxTH FORM NEWS THE HELENA ROMANES SCHOOL

MOTORwiSEin September, Year 12 students attended the annual Motorwise initiative at Carver Barracks, near wimbish. This programme allows students to learn about road safety and the dangers associated with driving. workshops included a talk by the fire service and the road traffic police, as well as demonstrations of the mechanics of a car, a tour of the operations of a cargo truck, and lectures on the effects of drugs and alcohol on driving. One of the most poignant parts of the trip for students was the opportunity to drive a car (in many cases for the first time) aided by a qualified instructor away from public roads. Tom forbes, 12CS, described the trip as a ‘fun and enjoyable experience’. ‘i learned about the dangers of driving, especially when under the influence,’ says Tom, who is probably going to begin learning to drive in the coming months. ‘it was great to pick up information about road safety, but it was shocking to see the effects of what could happen if we drive dangerously.’

CAREERS – wHAT’S MY LiNE? This December, Year 10 Business Studies students, learnt about a range of careers from HR to engineering, to customer service, to iT functions and other job/career roles when Stansted Airport came to the school. The careers event started with each staff member being quizzed as the students tried to discover their role. Once they had correctly guessed, or not, they had the chance to find out more about the different jobs that ranged from international Sales Manager to Aircraft Engineer.

Mrs P Abbott, Careers Co-ordinator HRS TECH CREw i have been part of the HRS Tech Crew for three years now and i have enjoyed every moment of it. it is all volunteer work but it really is great fun. we learn how to use professional technical theatre equipment (lighting and sound) we do many events from GCSE Drama performances to the School Production. ExTRA-CURRICULAR NEWS THE HELENA ROMANES SCHOOL

YEAR 11 fOOTBALL The Year 11 football team have made good progress in the National English Schools Cup. Over 600 schools entered the competition and we have managed to progress through to Round five. Round One was played away to freman College, Buntingford, in a very competitive match. freman caused a few problems for our defence and after HRS were lucky not to concede Jake Thompson managed to head home to secure a close 1-0 victory. HRS travelled away again, this time to Hutton to face St Martin’s School. HRS was dominant throughout the game but it took a mistake by their goalkeeper that allowed Jamie Dicker to score a long-range free kick. HRS doubled their lead just before half time with Jake Thompson finishing an excellent passing move. HRS continued to threaten the St Martin’s goal and after several good opportunities, both Jake and freddie wise scored well taken goals to give HRS a really comfortable lead.

Next HRS faced the Essex Champions Stanway in a close game. HRS took the lead early on when Jordan Carter managed to finish a good passing move from close range. Unfortunately, HRS started poorly after half time and conceded twice in the first five minutes. HRS began to

dominate possession and had a number of good opportunities to draw level. After missing a good opportunity, Rory Mercer took no chances and finished confidently to take the game to extra time. within a minute of extra time, Jordan Carter beat four players before rolling the ball to Rory to score the winner and put HRS through to Round four.

Robert Clack School, Dagenham, were the next opponents but HRS was dominant once more, with Jordan Carter and Jake Thompson scoring before half time. Robert Clack came out strongly after the break but Elliott Cockrell scored after Joe Carey made a good run down the right to kill any hopes the opposition had. A mistake at the back allowed Robert Clack to score but Elliot responded immediately and HRS had a three goal cushion within a minute of the restart.

in Round five, we were away to St Aloysius’ College in Camden. This was a very close game with both teams having good opportunities but both being unable to capitalise on them. it was a very open game with some excellent football being played by both teams. Eventually, it went to penalties and Jordan Marsh became the hero when he was able to save one of St Aloysius’ penalties to put HRS into the last 32 schools in the country.
