B haven Boatyard Sold Founde r Sells Out: BROOKHAVEN—The Beaver Dam Boat basin , founded 25 years ago by Clinton M. Smith ot Brookhaven , has been sold to Tim Hermus by Mr. Smith. Mr. Hermus , one of the area' s top flight Starboat skippers, now lives just above the basin. He is the third owner of the business , since Mr. Smith sold" " 1 " " " the business onc e before and then , bought it back in 1937. The basin has had a colorful history. Some 20 years ago, Mr. Smith and a number of nearby residents dug through from the site of the present marina to Beaver Dam creek. Mr. Smith employed a mudsucker to take out mud to a depth of 20 feet. He also laid a sand and gravel bottom, and the place became a popular swimming spot. A year later, Mr. Smith opened his bus- iness which he retained until he sold it to William Droste , from whom he bought it back in 1937. The hurricane of 1938 emptied the boat basin , and all craft in it sat on the bottom until the wind shifted, bringing in mud and water from the bay. The bottom has never been free of mud since. Other than a few minor occurences , the basin has suffered no major damages since that time. Mr. Smith still lives on the edge of the basin. It is located just east of Beav- er Dam road here. 500 at Dems ' Clambake On Village Beach Sunday BELLPORT—Nearly 500 guests assembled Sunday afternoon for the clambake given by the Great South Bay Democratic club. BROOKHAVEN—The Beaver Dam Boat basin, founded 25 yearsago by Clinton M. Smith ot Brookhaven , has been sold to TimHermus by Mr. Smith.

Mr. Hermus, one of the area's top flight Starboat skippers, now lives just above the basin. He is the third owner of thebusiness, since Mr. Smith sold""1 " " "the business once before and then ,bought it back in 1937.

The basin has had a colorfulhistory. Some 20 years ago, Mr.Smith and a number of nearbyresidents dug through from thesite of the present marina toBeaver Dam creek. Mr. Smithemployed a mudsucker to takeout mud to a depth of 20 feet.He also laid a sand and gravelbottom, and the place became apopular swimming spot. A yearlater, Mr. Smith opened his bus-iness which he retained until he

sold it to William Droste, fromwhom he bought it back in 1937.

The hurricane of 1938 emptiedthe boat basin, and all craft init sat on the bottom until thewind shifted, bringing in mudand water from the bay. Thebottom has never been free ofmud since. Other than a fewminor occurences, the basin hassuffered no major damages sincethat time. Mr. Smith still liveson the edge of the basin.
