    Company nameSector: Energy and Utilities

    Location: Brazil

    Increasing demand for testing

    The volume and interconnectivity of software

    intensive systems is expanding exponentially. Theimportance of high software quality will grow and

    therefore the importance of testing. Test

    automation is a practical solution to this

    increasing testing requirement.

    A standardised test language

    Testing software has specific features like a

    verdict, checking data values, result-based path

    decisions, time-outs and in some instances an

    extreme system load. General programming

    languages are in principal suitable for these tasks,

    but a specific test language is of course better.

    Standardising the test language has proven to be

    valuable. It ensures that everyone is specifying

    their test cases in the same way. Standards are

    also very important for making widely applicable

    tools. Test cases can then be exchanged from

    one tool to another, reducing dependency on

    individual vendors.

    The international standard: TTCN-3

    The only internationally standardised test

    language is TTCN-3. The Testing and Test Control

    Notation version 3 standard is published and

    maintained by ETSI: the European

    Telecommunication Standards Institute. While the

    origins of TTCN-3 are in telecommunications, it

    has been applied much more widely in the fifteen

    years since its publication. It has become a

    proven and mature test technology.

    TTCN-3: test language for the future

    TTCN-3 is supported by more and more generic

    and powerful tools from multiple vendors. As it isthe only standard in test automation, it represents

    the future for automated testing. Given the

    growing trend towards outsourcing and off-

    shoring, a standardised language is

    indispensable.

    Benefits and application of TTCN-3

    As TTCN-3 is a generic standard it can be used

    for testing all systems. Greatest benefits will be

    gained when testing:

    G system integrations;

    G service-oriented architectures;G conformance against protocols;

    G complex multi-user scenarios;

    G across multiple platforms;

    G without a graphical user interface.

    As test automation specifications are written in

    one standardised language, TTCN-3 can double

    testing reuse and productivity as well as halving

    long-term maintenance costs.

    Why LogicaCMG?

    LogicaCMG was involved from the start of TTCN-3 by being one of the contributing organisations

    to ETSI. As a thought leader in testing services,

    LogicaCMG was the first to recognise the

    potential of TTCN-3 for all industries. From an

    initial focus on telecoms, we can now support

    TTCN-3 for clients from all sectors through a

    dedicated competence centre.

    TTCN-3: test language ofthe futureTest automation with international

    standard

    Key benefits

    G Increase testingproductivity up to 50%

    G Save up to 20% on testautomation specification

    G Double test ware reuse

    G Decrease short-termmaintenance costs by upto 25%

    G Decrease long-termmaintenance costs by upto 50%

    G Double system quality
