ACTIVITY 2: PARAGRAPH HAMBURGER
A writing organizer that visually outlines the key components of a paragraph. Topic sentence, detail sentences, and a closing sentence are the main elements of a good paragraph, and each one forms a different "piece" of the hamburger.

WHY?
• It helps students organize their ideas into a cohesive paragraph.
• It helps show the organization or structure of concepts/idea.
• It demonstrates in a concrete way how information is related.
HOW?
Discuss the three main components of a paragraph,
or story. The introduction (top bun)The internal or supporting
information (the filling)The conclusion (bottom bun)
Ask students to write a topic sentence that clearly
indicates what the whole paragraph is going to be
about.
Have students compose several supporting
sentences that give more information about the
topic.

that restates the topic sentence.

ACTIVITY 3 :
SUBTITUTION TABLE
A substitution table is built on a given sentence pattern. It consists of several text columns, each one of which is formed by words that can play the same role within the sentence.
WHAT?
Young children have very short attention span especially when it comes to teaching them to write; even more so when you teach them to write purely using words and sentences for them to look at. Children, especially aged seven to nine (level one in primary school) need something else other than alphabets on the board for them to look at to get them interested in writing.
WHY USE
?
One simple way to get them to write, let's say about someone, is to introduce the character(s) complete with pictures that they can identify with. And in the case of writing using a substitution table, two sets of characters can be introduced and be used interchangeably.
