Stations of the Cross Each Friday of Lent you are invited to join with the sufferings and love of Jesus as He advanced toward His death and Glory. The stations are celebrated at 4:30 p.m. and last about 30 minutes.

A Step toward Baptism Last Sunday Gillian Reed, a young catechumen, was sent by this parish to the Diocesan Rite of Election at St. Amelia’s Church in Tonawanda. There, Bishop Malone acknowledged publically that she and dozens of other catechumens and candidates from around the eight counties of this diocese are ready to be admitted to the sacraments at the Easter Vigil. This Lent let us pray for her and so many others throughout the world who seek new life in Christ

A Glimpse into the Past Picture St. Patrick’s Day, 1854: The first Mass was celebrated in the new church built for the Irish immigrants who arrived to build the railroads and stayed to work in the Dunkirk factories. The new church replaced a smaller wooden building. That will be 160 years ago this weekend. Abraham Lincoln was not as yet elected president, the Civil War was years away and the West was still not tamed. The edifice now used as St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Church was very simple 160 years ago: there were no stained glass windows, no vaulted ceilings and no steeple. The history of Dunkirk is reflected in the beauty of the present church. As Dunkirk grew more prosperous, the church building went through many changes and improvements. As we worship this St. Patrick’s weekend, remember the fervor of these Catholics 160 years ago. As we celebrate our Eucharist let us share that same joyful anticipation of bringing the Gospel message to our Dunkirk community.

Please Don’t Toss It! We all receive too much junk mail daily, but be sure to watch for the letter from the parish concerning the Catholic Charities Campaign 2014. It is important! Your prompt response will make a difference in the lives of those who need the crucial services of Catholic Charities. You may either send a donation to the central office in Buffalo or place it in the parish collection basket. Either way your donation will be credited to this parish when you use the enclosed donation card. If you recently made a gift and yet received a second letter, we apologize. Sometimes letters cross in the mail.
