Dear Shaareth Israel FamilyLast year, at this time, we were still in shock and

doing what we could to adjust to what the pandemic meant for each of us in our own lives.

This year, we are now “seasoned”, we have fallen into our routines. Some of us might be settled into our routines, some might have ventured out into the new world of vaccines, and others might still feel safer at home. Wherever we are in this spectrum, we now have much more than a pandemic year’s worth of experience. Hopefully, most of us are no longer at the same level of panic we found ourselves in when it all began.

August 9th will be the first day of the month of Elul, the month that leads into the High Holy Day season. The kind of self-reflection that our tradition expects from us will probably feel more familiar this season than in years past.

What could the month of Elul and this prolonged pandemic season have in common? Many of us slowed down, were more aggressive in assessing our daily priorities that authentically matched our larger desires. Or perhaps, we discovered what are the things we truly miss.

The pandemic did not push us towards “perfection”. Some of us may have discovered new hobbies, but none of the survivors of this season have reached physical, emotional, financial, professional, ethical, spiritual, or religious perfection. We are humans, stumbling our way through life. Just as we stumbled our way through the pandemic, we will stumble our way through the High Holy Day season.

The goal of preparing for the High Holy Days, during the month of Elul, isn’t perfection. Rather, the goal is to mindfully stumble through. And this year, we can look back at the pandemic season and ask ourselves what new routines and habits did we fall into that we would like to continue carrying with us as we move forward? Did we uncover any aspects of ourselves that we are not so proud of? If so, what can we do to change that?

May we find the wisdom to be honest with ourselvesMay we be kind and forgiving to ourselvesMay we continue to foster relationships and communityMay all our prayers guide us into the futureMay all those of us who survived this past season continue to grow and learn

L’shanah Tovah U’metukah, May we have a sweet and good new year,

Rabbi PS: On a different note, please remember that our community is small and mostly volunteer- run. All Board members have full time jobs and/or responsibilities, they do the best they can and do a phenomenal job of keeping our small community thriving. Patience and kindness are appreciated when you communicate with us. We know that both during this prolonged pandemic season and as we confront our mortality and weight of the High Holy Days, strong emotions arise. If you truly need to communicate strong emotions, please direct these to me and not to our volunteers. There is always room for improvement and we welcome guidance at all times (both myself and the members of the Board).

CSI VoicesA recurring feature to capture the voices of those associated with Congregation Shaareth Israel. Would you like to share your voice? There are three questions:

1. What are your first memories of Congregation Shaareth Israel?2. What role has the Congregation played in your life?3. What role has the Congregation had in this community? For more information, contact Stephanie Shine.

FELA SHTURMAN, Lubbock, member since 1981-82 1. What are your first memories of Congregation Shaareth Israel?

Leon and I came to Texas Tech University in 1978 to attend Graduate School. When we asked my advisor Jane Winer about the Jewish community in Lubbock, she directed us to Monty Strauss. We started attending services at the old temple and since the beginning everybody was very welcoming and friendly with us. We were invited to parties, temple events like Bingo nights, and Passover and High Holiday dinners. We felt like a part of the congregation since the beginning and became members around 1981~1982.

2. What role has the Congregation played in your life?

CSI has played a very important role in my life. It has given me a feeling of identity and belonging. I grew up in a city with a large Jewish community, and I needed the continuance of my Jewish upbringing. CSI became not only my house of worship, but also my family and social life. CSI will always have a very special place in my heart and will always be home to me.

3. What role has the Congregation had in this community?

I think CSI has had a very important role in this community because West Texas is not very diverse when it comes to having different religions and traditions.

What’s the Board Up To?

The Board did not meet in the month of July. Our next meeting will be on Wednesday, Aug 18. Leon Shturman has been designing and managing our remote streaming which has been a great success! Mike Akins has been working hard, getting ready to take the treasurer reins from June Wagner on August 1. We wish June and Mitch the very best!

The Board invites your questions, comments, and suggestions. We also welcome your letters to the editor for publication in the Temple Times. If you are writing a letter for publication, please specify in your email. We will check with you before publishing any communications. You are welcome to contact us by emailing [email protected].
