COURSEWORK (100%)

This assignment seeks to explore the assessment of language skills and language content employed by teachers in the Malaysian Primary ESL classrooms. The data collected from classroom observations will form the point of reference for a test design and construction and for critical reflection.

TASK I [30% individual]

a. Observe an English lesson and pay special attention to the test type employed by the teacher to assess any language skill(s) or language content used in the lesson. Take note of the test employed and evaluate it with regards to the four basic principles of language assessment.

b. In about 500 words, write a report of your observation and comment on the strengths and weaknesses of the test and suggest improvements to make it more effective. Support your views and opinions with related literature.

Append (if any) pictures, sketches, notes, and other supporting materials.

TASK II [30% Individual]

a. Identify one language skill or language content area you wish to teach and design a lesson plan with appropriate teaching resources. Design a test or an assessment task that can be used to assess the language skill or content area identified in the lesson designed. Take note of the improvements that you have suggested in Part I to make the assessment effective.

b. Carry out the lesson and use the test or assessment task designed to assess the language skill or content area identified.

c. Append the lesson plan, teaching resources and the test or assessment task you have constructed.

d. Write a 500 word essay to justify the design and effectiveness of the test in assessing the language skill or content identified.

TASK III [40% individual]

a. Based on your experience and knowledge gained from task one and two, to what extent do you think language assessment can be utilized to enhance the learning of English in a Malaysian primary ESL classroom.

b. Your write up should be about 1000 words supported by relevant literature.
