To the Future Weavers:Starting on Jan 21st at the TFN Youth center with the kids, I will share some basic weaving techniques and I hope you may incorporate your cedar weaving teaching into the wool weaving. First, we will make a mini wall hanging, then a pouch/coin bag and lastly a woven headband. We have ten sessions and the first four are Jan 21, Jan 28 and Feb 4 and Feb 11th. I will post the last six after spring break.

Respectfully, Loretta A. Williams

For over 50 years, SFU’s Faculty of Education has been pushing the boundaries of education. Adopting a non-traditional, community-first approach, we are a leader in educational research and a pathfinder in Canadian teacher education — having developed over 20,000 teachers since 1965.

Whether you are still in high school, completing a Bachelor’s degree, or working as an education paraprofessional, SFU offers a variety of pathways for Indigenous students who are interested in pursuing a career in Education.

The PDP is SFU’s long-standing teacher education program. This full-time, post-degree program takes 16 months to complete and involves professional coursework, multiple field experiences, and a teaching practicum. Upon successful completion, student teachers are recommended to the Teacher Certification Branch for a teaching certificate. Unlike other programs, student teachers in the PDP work in modules to help build professional relationships and explore different themes i.e. Indigenous Perspectives Teacher Education Module (IPTEM).

Similar to the PDP, the PLP is a professional teacher education program that has been specifically tailored for educational paraprofessionals. This flexible, (mostly) part-time program has been designed with busy working schedules in mind. It is ideal for indigenous support workers and other para-educators who have at least two years of experience and who are currently working at least three days per week in a school environment. Upon successful completion, student teachers are recommended to the Teacher Certification Branch for a teaching certificate.

FACULT Y OF EDUCATION

PROFESSIONAL PROGR AMS

The BGS in Education is an ideal program for students who have a passion for education, but who also want the flexibility to explore other fields of study. While many of our graduates go on to complete the PDP and obtain a teaching certificate, the BGS in Education can also lead to other exciting career opportunities as it equips students with the skills needed to become highly adaptable, life-long learners. Completion of the BGS requires 120 units, including 45 upper division units. While many of these units can come from a wide variety of courses, all students are required to complete three core courses and satisfy the General Education Option or Double Minor Option.

The Faculty of Education offers support and resources for applicants of Indigenous ancestry from Canada.

EMERGENCY SHELTER FOR JAN. 18-19 POWER OUTAGE The Tsawwassen First Nation Rec Centre (1926 Tsawwassen Drive) will act as an emergency shelter and warming centre for residents of Tsawwassen Lands during the upcoming scheduled BC Hydro power outage. BC Hydro will be shutting off the power to Tsawwassen Lands for a system upgrade on Saturday, January 18, at 6pm and will not be restoring power until Sunday, January 19, at 8am. There will be two TFN staff members in the shelter overnight to ensure that residents are able to use the facility. The shelter will be heated and powered by an emergency generator for the entire 14-hour scheduled outage. Food and drinks will be provided for visitors; however, people are welcome to bring their own snacks or food items. Chairs, couches and tables will be provided for people to sit down.
