SPECIFICATION FOR STRUCTURAL STEEL WORK

1.0 GENERAL

1.1 Standard

A high standard of workmanship in all trades will be required. The Contractor shall ensure that only skilled and experienced workmen are employed.

1.2 Codes Unless otherwise specified in the drawing :

a) All rolled sections and plates shall conform to Grade-A as per IS:2062-1992.

b) Plated structures subjected to dynamic loading shall conform to Grade-B as per IS:2062-1992.

c) High strength micro-alloyed steel shall conform to SAIL-MA 350 HYA/HYB (SAIL product).

d) Steel sheets shall conform to IS:1079-1988.

e) Steel tubes for structural purposes shall conform to IS:1161 1979 (Grade YST-240).

f) Gutters and down comers shall be of copper bearing steel conforming to IS:2062-1992.

g) Crane rails shall conform to IS:3443-1980.

h) Glazing shall be 6 mm thick rough cast wired glass as per IS:3548-1988.

i) All black hexagonal bolts, nuts and locknuts shall conform to IS:1363-1984 and IS:1364-1983 (for precision and semi- precision hexagonal bolts). Washers shall conform to IS:1148-1982.

j) All HSFG bolts shall conform to IS:3757-1985.

k) Covered electrodes for arc welding shall conform to IS:814- 1991.

Coding of electrodes shall be as follows :-

a) ER 421 'C' x for mild steel of Grade A and Grade-B as per IS:2062-1992.

b) EB 542 'C' x H3X for i) Mild Steel of Grade B as per IS:2062-1992 for dynamically

loaded structures (arising out of crane, vibratory screen, equipment etc.)

ii) For SAIL-MA micro alloyed steel 350 HYA/HYB.

iii) When combined thickness (CT) for steel conforming to IS:2062-1992 exceeds 40mm as per Fig.1

"C" is the value of current as recommended by the electrode manufacturer.

1.3 Painting Specification

Primer coat :

A self curing solvent based inorganic zinc primer for steel surfaces suitable to develop water resistance rapidly.

Composition : Ethyl silicate / Metallic zinc, Colour : Grey, Finish : Matt

Intermediate Coat :

A high build epoxy coating reinforced with Micaceous iron oxide ( MIO ) for steel surfaces with suitable abrasion resistance and water impermeability.

Composition : Catalysed epoxy resin pigmented with MIO, Colour : Brown, Finish : Matt

Finish Coat :

An epoxy top coat with good adhesion and water resistance for application on steel surfaces.

Composition : Catalysed epoxy resin suitably pigmented.

1.3.1 Shop Application:

Surface PreparationRemove grease, oil and other contaminants using suitable degreasing solvent. Remove all rust and scale by grit/ shot blasting to a minimum standard of Sa 2 1/2, Swedish standard SIS 05 5900 with a surface profile not exceeding 50 microns. Remove all dust and loose particles by vacuum cleaning or by jet of dry compressed air.

Primer coat :

One coat of Inorganic Zinc rich Primer. Application : By conventional and airless spray, brush for small areas. Over coating interval : Minimum - Over night, Maximum - Dependant on conditions. The primer coat should be fully cured and free from residual solvent before over coating is carried out. Average D.F.T: 32-35 microns.

First primer coat should applied within 4-6 hours after shot blasting.

Intermediate Coat :

One coat of High Build Epoxy coating re-inforced with MIO (Micaceous Iron Ore). Application: By brush, roller or airless spray. Over coating interval : Minimum - over night, Maximum - Indefinite. Average D.F.T : 50-60 microns.

Finish Coat

Two coats of Chloro-rubber finish paint compatible to the primer and intermediate coats.

Application : By brush, airless or conventional spray. Over coating interval : Minimum - over night, Maximum - 7-10 Days. Average D.F.T. per coat : 30-35 microns.

Or

Two coats epilux epoxy finish paint compatible to the primer and intermediate coats.

Application : By brush, airless or conventional spray. Over coating interval : Minimum – over night, Maximum – 7-10 Days. Average D.F.T. per coat : 30-35 microns.

NOTE: THE THREE TYPES OF PAINTS SHOULD BE FROM THE SAME VENDOR. VENDOR TO ESTABLISH THE FINAL PAINTING APPLICATION PROCEDURE SUITABLE FOR HIS PAINT. VENDOR TO DEMONSTRATE THE PAINT APPLICATION AT SITE WITH THE TESTS LIKE PEAL OFF TEST, PAINT HARDNESS, DRYING TIME, FLOWABILITY, SCRATCH TEST COVERING AREA AND PAINT THICKNESS.

Records: All inspection records for surface preparation check. For all coats painting time and thicknesses are to be maintained.

Total thickness of paint should be minimum 135 microns.
