GENERAL TRYOUT INFORMATION & F.A.Q.

WHAT SHOULD I BRING TO TRYOUTS? Please bring water, snacks, & athletic/dance shoes; bring a layer to wear during talking/presentation portions of the tryout to keep muscles from cooling down; bring a sack lunch/dinner for the longer days.

HOW CAN I PREPARE FOR TRYOUTS? Attend the Audition Prep Clinics on Saturday, March 9 & March 24 @ 11a-3p. The prep clinics are not mandatory to tryout, though highly suggested as they are structured to help applicants specifically prepare for aspects of the GCU Dance Team Tryout. Please visit http://www.gcudancecamps.com for registration and further details about the clinic.

HOW MANY MEMBERS WILL MAKE THE TEAM? We anticipate taking 28-32 athletes for the 2019-2020 season.

DO VETERAN DANCE TEAM MEMBERS HAVE TO TRYOUT? Yes. We believe it is very important for everyone to tryout each year to avoid complacency. All returning athletes are required to re-audition each year, though they are exempt from the first cut on the first day.

DO YOU HAVE A SEPARATE TRYOUT FOR INCOMING FRESHMEN OR OUT-OF-STATE STUDENTS? No. All prospective dancers attend the same audition for the team – incoming freshmen, transfer students, and returning athletes. Many students travel in from out-of-state to tryout.

MAY MY FAMILY WATCH TRYOUTS? NEW THIS YEAR We are opening the Saturday morning 4x8 and Rallying portion ONLY to the public! All other parts of the tryout are closed for public viewing to insure the most objective environment for all participants.

I AM TRAVELING FROM OUT OF TOWN. WHERE CAN I STAY? Grand Canyon University Hotel 5115 N. 27th Avenue, Phoenix, AZ 85017, Phone: 1-844-683-5428 Email: [email protected], Website: http://www.gcuhotel.com

MAY I STILL TRYOUT IF I CANNOT COMPLETE ALL THE SKILLS LISTED? We will ask that you demonstrate each skill to the best of ability, if you are safely able to do so, in order to to assess your current level. Mastery of all skills are not an absolute requirement, but highly suggested.

CAN I TRYOUT BY VIDEO? We encourage you attend the live audition if you are a serious candidate for the 2019-2020 team. We are provisionally accepting video tryouts for one more year, and only by request from individuals who simply have no way to attend the live tryouts on the tryout dates due to an immobile life-event commitment (high school graduation, immediate family wedding, etc.) Video tryouts will be required to submit verifiable proof of the conflicting event. If selected, video candidates will be placed on the team on a provisional basis and are required to attend the summer rehearsals for further consideration. If video audition is truly your only option, please contact Coach Jacque Genung-Koch at [email protected] not later than March 1st to discuss the requirements and expectations.

Page 14: TRYOUT PACKET 2019-2020 - Amazon S3€¦ · • Attend summer work-outs and technique classes OR follow set home work-out/dance technique regime if you live outside the Phoenix area

14

WHAT IS THE EXACT SCHOLARSHIP AMOUNT? All team members receive a scholarship contingent on eligibility and university cap. The award amount varies each year and is based upon the program’s overall scholarship budget and the number of veterans/rookies. Dancers receive their award amount in June.

IS IT DIFFICULT TO BALANCE SCHOOL AND DANCE TEAM? Being a collegiate athlete is a large time commitment with high mental, emotional, and physical demands. As a college dancer, you learn to time manage, prioritize, and maintain responsible communication with your professors and coaches. Our dancers have several support programs in place to be student-athletes successful at both school and dance.

I’M FROM OUT OF STATE. WILL I GET TO GO HOME OVER SCHOOL BREAKS? We do our best to provide students with some time off over school breaks to travel home, though it is not guaranteed. Due to our performance schedule, nationals rehearsals, and unannounced athletic schedules for the 2019-2020 season, we are not yet able to share what dates will be available for travel home. As GCU Athletics become more successful, we are provided more opportunities to support our school teams! We also encourage family to visit us in AZ when possible!

HOW ARE SQUADS DETERMINED THAT PERFORM AT DIFFERENT EVENTS? The coaching staff will assign all dancers to squads for soccer games, basketball games, baseball games, and nationals. Squads are broken up depending on the needs of the event or activity. Squads for fall semester are usually determined by end of August.

CAN GCU DANCERS ALSO BE ON A PRO TEAM, DANCE COMPANY, OR DANCE MAJOR? Because of the large time commitment and rigorous physical schedule, we do not allow GCU Dancers to simultaneously dance for other teams, companies, or major in dance.

DOES THE GCU DANCE TEAM COMPETE? We have participated in Collegiate Dance Nationals and Championships for the past 6 years, and plan to compete again during the 2019-2020 season. Depending on the season, we may compete at UDA in Orlando, FL and/or USA in Anaheim, CA.

DO ALL GCU DANCERS PARTICIPATE IN NATIONAL COMPETITION? We are first and foremost a Game Day team. Performances and appearances at our home athletic contests and GCU events is our highest dance-related priority. As we do compete however, all team members are required to audition for placement on the competition squad. From there, the coaching and choreography staff assign members appropriately to fulfill both roles for Game Day Squad and Nationals Squad. All dancers have a rigorous schedule, and we plan our practices, events, and opportunities to make it as equitable as possible for all athletes.

WHERE CAN I LEARN MORE ABOUT THE POLICIES OF THE GCU DANCE TEAM? When the tryout choreography is emailed out, we will attach our updated Policies and Procedures handbook. If you have immediate questions about any policies, procedures, regulations, or rules for GCU Dancers, please contact Coach GK at [email protected]

IS IT MANDATORY AS A GCU DANCER TO LIVE ON CAMPUS? It is not mandatory to live on campus, though due to our rigorous schedule and the amenities and support provided our dancers, it does make it easier on the athlete. We encourage anyone who is unsure to ask questions and look into the option of campus living.

GCU DANCE TEAM TRYOUTS WAIVER AND RELEASE FROM LIABILITY I recognize and expressly agree that participating in any sport or activity associated with athletics is an inherently dangerous activity. Further, I recognize that certain safety precautions must be followed, yet even strict adherence to those procedures does not guarantee nor does Grand Canyon University guarantee Participant’s Safety.

Waiver and Release from Liability: In consideration of permission to use, today and on all future dates, the property, facilities, staff, equipment and services of GRAND CANYON UNIVERSITY. I, for myself, my heirs, personal representatives or assigns, do hereby release, waive, discharge, and covenant not to sue The Grand Canyon University, its directors, officers, employees and agents from liability from any and all claims including the negligence of Grand Canyon University, resulting in personal injury, accidents or illnesses (including death), and property loss arising from, but not limited to, participating in activities, classes, observation, and use of facilities, premises, or equipment.

Assumption of Risks: Physical activity, by its very nature, carries with it certain inherent risks that cannot be eliminated regardless of the care taken to avoid injuries. GRAND CANYON UNIVERSITY has facilities for and provides for activities such as weight lifting, running, aerobic activities, classes and sporting activities. Some of these involve strenuous exertions of strength using various muscle groups, some involve quick movements involving speed and change of directions, and others involve sustained physical activity which places stress on the cardiovascular system.
