Bilingual Stations of the Cross: The final Stations of the Cross for this Lenten Season will be held Friday, March 18 at 5pm in the church. Please join us.

Lenten Book Study:

All are invited to join our book study on HABITS OF THE SOUL: Learning to Live on Purpose which is held each Thursday in the Priory Chapel 6:30 to 8:30 pm. See the flyer for details.

Fifth Sunday of Lent ~ V Domingo de Cuaresma

En la segunda lectura encontramos las firmes palabras de San Pablo. Él revela

en términos indudables que la vida en Cristo es nuestra meta. Todo lo demás, afirma él,

es “tontería.” Chatarra. Desperdicio. Basura. ¿Es esto cierto? ¿Todo lo demás es

“tontería” comparado con la profundización de nuestra relación con el Señor? ¿Qué dice

usted acerca de poner las actividades recreativas antes que asistir a Misa? ¿O preferir

pasar horas ininterrumpidas jugando los últimos videojuegos o viendo

la televisión en lugar de dedicar tiempo para asistir a un grupo de estu-

dio bíblico, practicar en el coro o servir en una cocina popular? ¿O

mantener horas extras en el trabajo por encima de compartir el Evan-

gelio con amigos y vecinos? ¿En qué medida ejercitamos la corre-

sponsabilidad acerca de nuestra relación con Cristo?

El bailarín que llegó a la santidad. Nació en Asís (Italia) en 1838. Su nombre en el mundo era Francisco Possenti. Era el décimo entre 13 hermanos. Su padre tra-bajaba como juez de la ciudad. A los 4 años quedó huérfano de madre. El papá, que era un excelente católico, se preocupó por darle una educación esmera-da, mediante la cual logró ir dominando su carácter fuerte que era muy propenso a estallar en arranques de ira y de mal ge-nio. Tuvo la suerte de educarse con dos comunidades de excelentes educadores: los Hermanos Cristianos y los Padres Jesuitas; y las enseñanzas recibidas en el colegio le ayudaron mucho para resistir los ataques de sus pasiones y de la mundanalidad. El joven era sumamente esmerado en vestir-se a la última moda. Y sus facciones ele-gantes y su fino trato, a la vez que su rebo-sante alegría y la gran agilidad para bai-lar , lo hacían el preferido de las mucha-chas en las fiestas. Su lectura favorita eran las novelas, pero le sucedía como en otro tiempo a San Ignacio, que al leer novelas, en el momento sentía emoción y agrado, pero después le quedaba en el alma una profunda tristeza y un mortal hastío y aba-timiento. Sus amigos lo llamaban "el enamo-radizo". Pero los amores mundanos eran como un puñal forrado con miel". Dulces por fuera y dolorosos en el alma. Al terminar su bachillerato, y cuando ya iba a empezar sus estudios universitarios, Dios lo llamó a la conversión por medio de una grave enfer-medad. Lleno de susto prometió que si se curaba de aquel mal, se iría de religioso. Pero apenas estuvo bien de salud, olvidó su promesa y siguió gozando del mundo. Un año después enferma mucho más grave-

mente. Una laringitis que trata de ahogarlo y que casi lo lleva al sepulcro. Lleno de fe invoca la intercesión de un santo jesuita martirizado en las misiones y promete irse de religioso, y al colocarse una reliquia de aquel mártir sobre su pecho, se queda dor-mido y cuando despierta está curado mila-grosamente. Pero apenas se repone de su enfermedad empieza otras vez el atractivo de las fiestas y de los enamoramientos, y olvida su promesa. Es verdad que pide ser admitido como jesuita y es aceptado, pero él cree que para su vida de hombre tan mundano lo que está necesitando es una comunidad rigurosa, y deja para más tarde el entrar a una congregación de religiosos. Y el día menos pensado muere la hermana que él más quiere. Considera que esto es un llamado muy serio de Dios para que se vaya de religioso. Habla con su padre, pero a éste le parece que un joven tan ami-go de las fiestas mundanas se va a aburrir demasiado en un convento y que la voca-ción no le va a durar quizá ni siquiera unos meses. Al entrar de religioso se cambia el nombre y en adelante se llamará Gabriel de la Dolorosa. Gabriel, que significa: el que lleva mensajes de Dios. Y de la Dolorosa, por-que su devoción mariana más querida consiste en recordar los siete dolores o penas que sufrió la Virgen María. Desde entonces será un hombre totalmente trans-formado.
