TRANSCRIPT
During a cold month of
April we have had a month
of learning and activities
at Malden. Our Badmin-
ton team experienced
learning, sportsmanship
and fun at their most re-
cent exhibition games and
tournaments. As we head
into May we will be very
busy at Malden (see at-
tached calendar)! We
greatly appreciate your
support with our activities.
Together we make Malden
the best place to learn!
For your convenience, you
are able to subscribe to our
school calendar by visiting
our school website. This
would push all of the
events at Malden to your
own personal device!
At the end of May and into
June our grades 3 and 6
students will be complet-
ing EQAO assessments.
Please note the testing
dates that will be sent
home by your child’s teach-
er. We would appreciate
that appointments be
made outside of these
dates to greatly assist your
child in completing the
tests.
Outside, our playground
equipment is being enjoyed
by all of our students. In
order to ensure safety, stu-
dents are not allowed to go
on the playground equip-
ment wearing sandals or
open-toed shoes. Also, for
student safety, during the
school day, it is highly rec-ommended that flip-flop style shoes not be worn to school. Students are also
asked to wear indoor shoes
in the classroom and the
gym. Again, this is for the
safety of all, as well as
maintaining school cleanli-
ness.
The hot lunch program con-
tinues to be popular with
our final order of the year
going home later in the
month. Thank you for your
support in this successful
initiative and for using
School Cash Online to place
your orders. Last order we
had over 120 students use
this convenient method of
payment!!
Our recent Book Fair was a
huge success! All of the
profits from the sale of
books will be going directly
to purchase new reading
material for our library.
Thanks to Mrs. Hadfield
and our parent and student
helpers for all of their work!
We are looking forward to
our upcoming track meet as
well as our Talent Show
and Primary Play Day later
in June. We hope to see
many of you at the school to
enjoy these events as well.
I encourage your continued
involvement in your child’s
education. Please feel free
to contact me at the school
with any concerns, ques-
tions, or news to share.
Have an enjoyable month.

As the school year moves towards its
completion, students will be partici-
pating in a variety of tests and/or
assessments, including the EQAO
Provincial Assessment. Certain
basic supports, such as having a
good breakfast and getting enough
sleep the night before are common
sense, but here are some other strat-
egies that you may choose to imple-
ment to help your child be a high
scorer.
Play strategy games like chess
and Monopoly often. They are
GREAT ways for helping children
make decisions and thinking
through multi-step problems, which
are often a large part of testing.
These types of games will also help
your child to concentrate and build
stamina for the hard thinking he or
she will be doing.
When reviewing formulas,
spelling rules or other facts, use the
eight second rule. When reviewing
notes, have your child focus on the
fact for at least eight seconds while
studying. This extra bit of time will
give the brain a chance to store the
information in its short term
memory.
Try to familiarize your child with
the types of questions that may be
asked. Check with your child’s
teacher on what types of questions
or if there are any extra or practice
test materials available. You may
also like to use items like flashcards
to match words and definitions. The
EQAO website (www.eqao.com) also
has practice tests available in the
parent resource section.
Some research shows that exer-
cise—stretches, jumps, even danc-
ing—can help children focus their
thoughts as they prepare for school
or take a break from homework.
Cross-lateral exercises (ones in
which arms and legs cross from one
side of the body to the other) are es-
pecially good because they use both
sides of the brain and enhance
learning. Encourage your child to do
some simple exercises before s/he
starts studying and then again when
s/he heads for the bus on test day.
Give your child choices. Whether
it’s which movie to watch, how to
spend birthday money, or which ac-
tivity is the better choice, these
types of conversations help your
child become a better problem solv-
er. Many questions on tests are de-
signed so that students must deter-
mine the best answer
from a variety of choic-
es. Often, the answer
is not that easy to se-
lect as two answers
may seem correct or
the better choice.
Take the time to discuss what the
consequences of each choice will be.

EQAO Assessments Gr. 3 and 6 How to Support Your Child
Planning Forward September 2018 With input from the staff, I will begin working on preliminary class lists for
next year’s classes mid June. The staff and I take a considerable amount of
time and use our professional judgment to place your child in a class in which
we feel he or she will be successful. The staff will be considering factors such
as: gender balance, academic balance, behavioural concerns, learning styles,
student conflicts, previous class placements such as combined grades, etc.
when organizing lists. Parents are welcome to contact Mrs. Durham during the
last two weeks of August if they would like to know their child’s teacher for September.
