IntroductionCambridgeRefugeeResettlementCampaign(CRRC)isaCambridgeandCambridgeshirebasedorganisation,foundedinSeptember2015asacommunitygroupandregisteredwiththeCharityCommissionasCIO(Foundation)on2May2017.CRRCisentirelyvolunteer-led,andreliesonvolunteers’timeanddonationstodeliveritsstatementofpurpose.CRRCisledbytheBoardofTrustees,andthereisacoregroupofvolunteerswhocoordinatethedifferentareasinsubgroups,orareinvolvedinbehind-the-scenesoperations.Structure,governanceandmanagementThisisCRRC’sfirstreportasaCIO,duringwhichitwasgovernedbybetweenseventotencharitytrusteesatgiventimes.HannahBeckerresignedasatrusteeinFebruary2018,butcontinuedassubgroupleadcoordinatingtheadultEnglishtuition,forwhichweareverygrateful.PaulaPinzonBonillaresignedasatrusteeinMarch2018afterovertwoyearsofintenseengagementwithCRRC.Shewasthankedforherserviceandhasbeenmissed.Theconstitutionprovidesforaminimumoffiveandmaximumoftwelvetrustees.BeingaFoundationCIO,theonlyvotingmembersareitstrustees.Trusteesareappointedforatermofthreeyearsbyaresolutionpassedataproperlyconvenedmeetingofthecharitytrustees.Newtrusteescanbeappointedbyexistingtrustees.Anycharitytrusteeiseligibleforreappointment,andcanserveforthreeconsecutiveterms.Trusteescommittogivingtheirtimeandexpertisefreely.Notrusteeremunerationwaspaidduringthisperiod.Allrelevantinterestsmustbedisclosedbytrusteesandregisteredwiththeothertrustees.Inaccordancewiththecharity’sbestpractice,atrusteemustwithdrawfromdecisionswhereaconflictofinterestarises.Therewerenosuchconflictsofinterestsordecisionwithdrawalsinthisperiod.Trusteesmetatleastmonthlyinpersonand,occasionally,individualtrusteesjoinedviaskypevideocalls.Eachmeetingwaschairedandminuted.Quorumfortrusteemeetingsistwocharitytrusteesorthenumbernearesttoonethirdofthetotalnumberofcharitytrustees,whicheverisgreater.Actions,approvals,charityprogress,accounts,andanyotherbusinessarereviewedineachmeeting.BetweenmeetingstrusteescommunicateusingemailandWhatsApp.Trusteesreviewthebroadstrategyandareasofactivityforthecharityonaquarterlybasis.

VolunteersandSupportersWecouldnotcarryoutourworkwithoutthetremendouscontributionsofourmanyvolunteersandsupporters.CRRCworksinacollaborativemanner,recognisingthatthenatureofavolunteer-ledgrouprequiresflexibility,whilstensuringthatwefulfiltaskswecommittowithingiventimeframesinordertoachieveourobjects.TherehasbeenahighlevelofongoingengagementfromthosegettingintouchwithCRRCtoexpresstheirinterestingettinginvolved,suggestingthattheoperationalmodeliseffective.BetweenMay2017andMarch2018,CRRCscreenedover30peoplewhoregisteredinterestinbecomingactivevolunteerswithCRRC.Roughly70%ofthosecomingintocontactwiththeorganisationtookupanactivevolunteeringrole.Weestimatethatthetotalvolunteertimewebenefitedfromduringtheyearamountedtoover5,000hours.WethankallvolunteersandsupportersfortheirtremendouscontributionstoCRRC’swork!BeneficiariesWhobenefitsfromCRRC'sactivities?
• RefugeessettlingorresettledbytheauthoritiespredominantlyintoCambridgeandCambridgeshirebenefitbybeingassistedintheirsettlementandintegrationintothecommunity.
• Localcommunitiesincludingcommunitygroupsandfaithgroupsintowhichtherefugeesaresettlingorbeingresettledprofitbyfosteringandpromotingdiversityandsocialcohesion.
• Relevantstatutoryauthorities,politicians,andothersinvolvedinpolicy-makinganddecision-makingonissuesaffectingrefugeesbenefitbybeingsupportedinthedeliveryoftheirstatutoryfunction.
CRRCacceptsreferralsfromrefugeesthemselvesorfromotherindividuals,organisationsorauthorities,andconsiderswhetherassistancesoughtisconsistentwiththeorganisation’s’purposes.Decisionsonprovidingassistancearemadeatquoratemeetingsofthetrusteesorasotherwisepermittedbytheconstitution.Thetrusteeshaveregularmeetings,wheredecisionsaretabledatanopendiscussion.Thereisalsotheopportunityforsuggestionstobesubmittedwithinouronlinegroupforum.Oncedecisionshavebeensubmitted,thetrusteesdiscussandthenvoteforthepreferredoption.Thetrusteesdiscussandadapttochanginglocalandnationalcircumstancesandtheneedsofthebeneficiaries.

ObjectivesandactivitiesforthepublicbenefitThecharity'sobjectsCambridgeRefugeeResettlementCampaign(CRRC)isconstitutedforthefollowingpurposes:a)Topromoteanycharitablepurposeforthebenefitofpersonswhohavebecomedisplacedpersonsorrefugeesfromthecountriesoftheiroriginordomicilebyreasonofhostilities,persecution,oppression,discrimination,naturaldisastersorotherlikecauses,includingthroughthereliefofpoverty,theadvancementofeducationandtraining,andthepromotionofgoodcitizenship.(b)Toadvancetheeducationofthepublicingeneralaboutissuesrelatingtopersonswhohavebecomedisplacedpersonsorrefugeesfromthecountriesoftheiroriginordomicilebyreasonofhostilities,persecution,oppression,discrimination,naturaldisastersorotherlikecauses.

BenefitsInsettingCRRC’sobjectivesandplanningouractivitiestrusteeshavegivenseriousconsiderationtotheCharityCommission’sgeneralguidanceonpublicbenefit:

BysupportingandpromotingthewelfareandinclusionofallrefugeespredominantlyinCambridgeandCambridgeshire,thereisapublicbenefittorefugees,thelocalcommunitiesandstakeholdersincreatingawelcomingandsafeenvironmentforrefugees.CRRCachievesthisbyprovidingarangeofpracticalsupport(includingprovidingwelcomepacksandhouseholdsnecessitiestorefugees),organisingsocialeventsfortherefugees,CRRCvolunteersandthelocalcommunities,andsecuringandpreparingaccommodation.Bysupportingrefugeestoadapttotheirnewenvironment,thelocalcommunitiesbenefitfromtherefugees’contributionsandinvolvementinthelocalcommunity,whetherbywayofemployment,socialcohesionetc.Inadditiontotheexamplesprovidedabove,CRRCassistsrefugeestodevelopemployabilityskillsandworkswithlocalemployerstoidentifyappropriateopportunities.

Byprovidingpracticalsupporttolocalauthoritiesinaccommodatingrefugees,bothbenefitfromCRRC’sassistanceinovercominglogisticalandeconomicchallenges(amongothers)duringtheprocessofsettlingin.CRRCrendersthisassistanceby,asmentionedabove,securingaccommodationforrefugeesandfosteringopportunitiesandotherformsofsupportforunaccompaniedrefugeechildren.Bypublicisingandcelebratingthecontributionofrefugeestolocalcommunities,UKsocietyandculture,refugees,localcommunitiesandthepublicatlargebenefitfromembracingdiversityandchallenginghostilityanddiscriminationinsociety.CRRCachievesthisbyorganisingsocialandfundraisingeventsforrefugees,localcommunitiesandvolunteers,informingfaithandcommunitygroupsandotherinfluencersontheplightofrefugeesandtheircontributionstoUKsociety.RiskManagementThetrusteeshaveconsideredthemajorriskstowhichthecharityisexposed,havereviewedthemandputinplacemitigations.Themainrisksthattrusteeshaveidentifiedare:ExternalenvironmentThehardshipsfacedbyourbeneficiarieshavebeenexacerbatedbychangestothebenefitssystem,risesinutilitybillsandtransportcostsandmisunderstandingsabouttheirresponsibilitiesasbenefitsclaimants.Somebeneficiarieshavesufferedfromhostilitytowardrefugeesortotheirreligionintheirlocality.TheintroductionofUniversalCreditinCambridgeaffectsourbeneficiarygroupandhasputadditionalpressuresonbeneficiariesandvolunteersworkingcloselywiththefamilies.Weworktomitigateitseffectsbyassistingwithbudgeting,negotiatingrepaymentplanswithutilitycompaniesandseekingcheaperoptions.Wherenecessaryweprovideemergencysupportandencourageourbeneficiariesandvolunteerstoadjusttochangesbypreplanningandtakingadviceearly,forexamplethroughtheirCouncilkeyworkerorCAB.FinancialsecurityOurabilitytocontinueCRRC’sworkreliesonmonetarydonationsanddonationsinkindfromgroupsandindividuals.Weencouragedonationswithinthelocalcommunitythroughsocialmedia,fundraisersandPRwork.

Whereappropriatewerequestgiftaidfordonations,and,aspartofthisrequest,requiretheindividualtocompletegiftaidinformationinorderforustoreclaimthetax.Intheeventofalarge,significantdonation(over£10000)werequesttheindividuals/companiesaddressdetailsandundertakeduediligencecheckstosatisfythetrusteesastothesourceofthedonations,andensurethattheprospectivegiftdoesnotconflictwiththecharity’sobjectives.Themajorityofpaymentsarebycash,chequeorbanktransfer.Therehavebeennoconcernstodateinrelationtopublicdonations,andafullincomeandexpenditurespreadsheethasbeenmaintained.Donors’namesareacknowledgedinourpublicityandaccountswiththeconsentofthedonor.OperationalrisksAsCambridgeRefugeeResettlementCampaignexpandsitsrangeofprojectsandpartnershipsthiswillinevitablyincreasethenumberofoperationalrisks,whichneedtobemanaged.CRRCcarriesoutriskassessmentsforallnewactivitiestoensurethatemergingrisksareunderstoodandpoliciesandproceduresareinplacetomitigatethese.CRRChasreviewedandupdatedpoliciesandproceduresaroundsomekeyriskareasincludingsafeguardingandDBSchecks.Ourvolunteerdriversensurethattheirinsurancecompaniesareawarethattheyareinvolvedinprovidingliftstobeneficiaryfamilies,andfamiliesareprovidedwiththecorrectsizechildseatsforusewhenbeingdriventoanappointmentorevent.AchievementsandperformanceIntheperiodpriortoourregistrationCambridgeRefugeeResettlementCampaignwasfoundedinSeptember2015byStefanHaselwimmerandasmallgroupofcommittedindividualsundertheumbrellaofCitizensUK,withtheaimofsupportingthelocalauthorityinfulfillingthepromiseofresettling20,000SyriansintheUK.Therewasimpressivefeedbackfromthelocalcommunitywhichenabledtherecruitmentofexperiencedandcommittedvolunteers.Initially,CRRCfocussedoncampaigninganddidalottobuildourrelationshipwiththelocalauthorities.

MeetingthefirstfamiliesfromSyriainDecember2015wasveryemotional.ItfeltasifallCRRC’seffortshadbeguntopayoff.Aftersomanyweeksoftalkingaboutwelcomingrefugees,wewerefinallyactuallyabletogreetthem.CRRCkickedintogearwithwelcomepacksforthefamiliestoreceiveattheairportandboxesofessentialfoodandhygieneitemswaitingforthemintheirnewhomes.Thefirstsocialwasorganisedforjustdaysaftertheirarrival.Fromthebeginning,CRRCorganisedanregularAdultEnglishLanguageProgrammeprovidedbythemostdedicatedvolunteers,allqualifiedESOLteachers,withaccompanyingchildcare,focussingonfunctionallanguagetohelpthefamiliesbecomemoreindependent.ThescopeofCRRC’sworkincreasedquicklyandsubgroupswerecreatedtomanagekeyareasofsupport.CRRChasbeenworkingcloselywiththeCambridgeCityCouncilandtheCambridgeEthnicCommunityForum,andwehaveorganisedeventswitharangeofothers,suchasCambridgeAmnestyInternationalandCamCRAG.CRRCbecameanUnincorporatedAssociationinMarch2016,beforebeingregisteredasaCharitableIncorporatedOrganisationinMay2017.CRRChasbeenamemberofCambridgeCouncilforVoluntaryServicessince2016.

CRRC’smainactivities:
DirectsupportforfamiliesandindividualsBytheendofthefinancialyearinJune2018,CRRCsupportedseventeenrefugeefamilies,mostlyfromSyria,afewfromIraqandonefromSudan,numberingclosetoonehundredbeneficiaries.Inordertoprovidemeaningfulsupport,effectivecommunicationbetweenbeneficiariesandCRRChasbeencrucial.Oneofourvolunteershasactedasthe(Arabicspeaking)ContactPointforthefamilies,arolethatiscrucialinconveyinginformationandrequeststoandfromCRRCandbeneficiaries.CRRChasalsotriedtoappointtoeachfamilyavolunteertoactasaso-calledFocalPoint(FP).TheroleoftheFPisbroadlytoensurethatthetrusteesareawareofthefamilies’particularandindividualneedswhetherforgoodsorservicesthatCRRCmaybeabletoassistwithinorderforthefamilytorebuildtheirlivesinCambridgeandfacilitateintegrationintothecommunity.

Aftergettingtoknowthefamily,whichisimportanttounderstandwhatthefamilyneeds,theFPvolunteerplaysacentralroleinlinkingthedifferentCRRCfamilysupportserviceswitheachotherandwiththetrustees.KnowledgeofspokenandwrittenArabicfacilitatesthetaskofbeingafocalpointimmensely,butvolunteerswithnooronlylimitedknowledgeofArabichavealsobeenabletosupportfamiliesveryeffectively,eitherenlistingthehelpofanArabicspeakingvolunteertointerpret,orusingtranslationapps,or,often,acombinationofthoseincludinghandsandfeet.SinceregistrationasaCIO,wehavestrengthenedourvolunteertraininganddocumentationtoensurethatthesecriticalrolescentringarounddirectfamilysupportcanbefulfilledtoahighandconsistentstandard.Allvolunteersarerequiredtoabidebyourpolicies(e.g.confidentiality,safeguardinganddataprotection)andourprofessionalcodeofconduct.CRRCvolunteersaremadeawarethattheyneedtoobtainconsenttoshareinformationaboutthefamily,withinCRRCorwithothers.TherearemanyareasinwhichFPvolunteershavesupportedourbeneficiaries.Generally,theFPisnotexpectedtodeliverallthefamilies’additionalneedsthemselvesbutrathertofacilitateprovisionwhererequired,butmanyFPshaveinvolvedthemselvesataverydirect,hands-onlevel:
• OnebeneficiarystudiedonceaweekwithaCRRCvolunteerforthedrivingtheorytest.
• OneFPorganisedaswiftreplacementforabrokenwashingmachineforafamilyoffive.
• ManyFPshelpedwithhealth-relatedissues,forexamplearrangingdoctor’sappointmentsandensuringthatthebeneficiaryisregisteredasArabicspeakingandneeding(languageline)interpretation.
• Othershelpedwitharequestforafemaleinterpreter,afemaledoctorornurseandwithapplyingforvitamin/fruit/milkvouchersforchildrenandpregnantwomen.
Generally,CRRCencouragesthebeneficiariestoinsistontheuseofprofessionalinterpretersprovidedbytheNHS,butsupporthasregularlybeenrequiredtoensurethatthisisputinplaceeffectively.Onebeneficiarywasthevictimofahit-and-runbicycleaccident,andtheFPhelpedtoorganiseprobonolegaladvice.

WiththehelpofadedicatedCRRCgardeningteamseveralfamilieshavetransformedtheirsmallgardensintolusciousvegetablepatches,andacoupleoffamilieshavebeenhelpingoutanallotmentplotholderattheTrumpingtonAllotmentSociety,waitingforanallotmentoftheirown.
Eachfamilyhasdifferentneedsandrequirementschangeovertime.AcentralaimofCRRChasbeentohelprefugeestobecomeself-sufficientandtoencouragethemtoparticipatefullyintheirnewcommunity.Therefore,weemphasisetoourFPvolunteersthatallactionstakenshouldbedirectedtosupportingbeneficiariestotakecontroloftheirownlivesandbecomeindependentofsupportservices.IthasbeenaprivilegeandapleasuretoseebeneficiaryfamilieshelpingoneanotherthroughsicknessandchildcareatdifficulttimesorgoingoutoftheirwaytopreparefoodandwelcomeforEnglishvisitorsandneighboursevenwhentheyhavesolittlethemselves.

SocialsTheCRRCsocialshavebeenrunningsinceshortlyafterthefirstthreefamiliesarrivedinCambridgeinDecember2015.Thesearemonthlyevents,andtheyhavebecomeaveryimportantdateinthefamilies’andthevolunteers’socialcalendars.Theyhavegrownenormouslyovertheyearsandarenowattendedbyapproximately60-70adultsand40-50children,anumbermadeupofrefugeefamiliesandCRRCvolunteers.Untilsummer2017thesocialswereheldatHartingtonGroveQuakerMeetingHouse,butfromautumn2017,theyhavebeenheldatMayfieldPrimarySchool.WithlimitedtransportationforfamiliesspreadoutacrossthecityandnorthCambridge-shire,itisvitalthatweprovidearegularvenuefortheseevents,andCRRCalsoprovidestransporttothesocialseitherbyaskingvolunteerstoofferliftsorbyorderingtaxis.Everyonewhoattendsisencouragedtobringfoodordrinktoshare.Volunteersareencouragedinadvancetosignuptohelpwithaspecificroleattheevent.Thereisalwayschildcarearrangedwithspecialactivitiesforthechildren,andthereissometimesmusic.
Regularlythesocialisalsousedformakingannouncementstothecommunity;introducingnewvolunteers;orfortouchingbasewithfamiliesandkeepinguptodateontheirneedsandissues.

EnglishlanguagesupportforadultsUntil2017classesorganisedbyCambridgeRefugeeResettlementCampaignweretheonlyEnglishlanguageprovisionforrefugeeswhohadcometoCambridgethroughtheVulnerablePersonsResettlementScheme.TheywereanabsolutelyessentialservicefornewlyarrivedrefugeesinCambridge.Sincethebeginningof2017,classesatCambridgeRegionalCollege(CRC),fundedbyCambridgeCityCouncil,becameavailable,however,noteveryonehasbeenabletoattendasthereisnochildcareprovisionforchildrenagedunderone.Therefore,CRRCvolunteerscontinuedtoprovideweeklyclasseswithchildcare.During2018,CambridgeRefugeeResettlementCampaigncontinuedtoprovideessentialEnglishclassestothosewhocouldnot,forvariousreasons,attendthefulltimeclassesatCambridgeRegionalCollege.Forthefirstpartoftheyear,thesewereheldatStLaurence'sChurchandweareverygratefulfortheirsupporttothisprogramme.Fromthesecondhalfofthesummerterm,CRRCworkedwiththeCityCouncilandC3churchtotrialclassesthreemorningsaweekinordertoprovidemoreteachingtothoseunabletogotoCRC.Theresultswereoverwhelminglypositiveandthecollaborationhascontinuedsince.Weareincrediblygratefultothevolunteerteachersandchildcaresupport,whomakethispossible. Photo:HilarySuttonClassesweresupplementedbyweeklyone-to-onein-homesupportfromdedicatedCRRCvolunteers,consolidatingessentialvocabularyandgrammarlearntinclassesruneitherbyCRRCorCRC.Inaddition,aseriesoffirstaidclasseswereprovidedgivingattendeesnewskillsandincreasingtheirconfidence.AllvolunteerEnglishsupportorganisedbyCRRCisprovidedbyexperiencedandqualifiedESOLEnglishteachers.Throughouttheyear,theteamcontinuedtoworktowardsseveralmainaims,suchasimprovingthelevelofconfidenceinapplyingEnglishlanguagepurposively;providingsupportwithfunctionalEnglishlanguageforanyindividualswhowishit,asappropriatetotheirneeds,andencourageothers;ensuringthatCRRCactivitiesencouragetheuseofEnglishlanguage,encouragingandsupportingexposuretoEnglishlanguageindaytodayliving,andtheneedtocommunicateinEnglish.

• Onemanhelpedanothertocontactaphoneproviderandnegotiateonhisbehalf.• Onemanhasengagedwithseveralvoluntaryjobs,onewithOxfamandonehelping
peoplewithlearningdifficultiesinusingcomputers. • Severalwomennowmakeconfidentlydoctor’sappointmentsanddealwithfamily
healthissueswithoutthehelpofavolunteerinterpreter.• Severalwomenareabletomakelinkswiththeirlocalcommunity,sharefoodand
celebrationswithherneighboursandattendlocalparentandbabygroups.EducationalsupportforthechildrenNearlyallschool-agedchildrenfromCRRC’sbeneficiarieshavebeenenrolledintheone-to-onelanguageandmathstuitionprogrammeprovidedbyCRRC’schildren’stuitionteam.Somepre-schoolchildrenalsohavetutors.CRRCvolunteersarematchedwiththefamiliesandtheymeetthechildrenonceaweek,usuallyonaSaturday.Theaimofthissupportistohelpthechildrendeveloplanguageandmathsskills,conceptualunderstandingandknowledgeoftheirculturalcommunity;andtobuildconfidenceandself-esteem.ManyoftheCRRC’schildren’stuitionteamvolunteersalsobelongtoRefugeeEd,auniversitybasedcharity.Theseyoungpeopleoftencontinuetheirinterestintherefugeecrisis.OnevolunteerhasspentayearinacampinGreeceteachingyoungchildren.Anothervolunteer,ongraduation,ishopingtoworkwithethnicminoritiesinherhomecityofHongKong.Thegroupofvolunteersmeetonceamonthtoexchangeideas,resourcesandconcerns.ManyvolunteershavesignedforwebbasedtrainingwithFutureLearnandindeedmanyhelpedtocreatethison-linetraining.Theone-to-oneteachersofschool-agechildrenoftenalsohelp,afterobtainingwrittenconsentfromthefamily,withliaisingwiththechild'sschoolsothatthechildissupportedinfollowingthecurriculumattheappropriatelevel.Welearnedthatschoolssendasignificantamountofemailsorletterstofamilies,whichtheymaystruggletounderstand.Withwrittenconsentfromthefamily,ithasbeenpossibletogetroutineemailsfromschoolsdirectedtoaCRRCmembersothatimportantmessages,suchasnoticeofaparent'seveningcouldbeflaggedtothefamily.

SchoolholidayactivitiesIntheschoolholidays,theEnglishteamoffersfamilyactivitydaysthatcombinefunandlanguagelearning.Inthesummerof2017,wecoordinatedarichmixofoutingsandeventsaroundCambridgeforlocalrefugeefamilies.TheschoolholidayswereagreatopportunitytoexploreCambridgeshire,practiseEnglish,andgettoknowpeople.CRRCvolunteersorganisedafantasticprogrammeandmostfamiliesattendedatleastoneevent:
• NationalTruststaffatAngleseyAbbeywereverywelcomingandthechildrenwerefascinatedbythewatermillatLode.
• AtthehomeoftheCambridgeModelEngineeringSociety,familiesandvolunteersenjoyedatriponthemodelrailwaythroughthewoodspopulatedbyfriendlyteddybears.RealliveanimalsawaitedatSheprethWildlifePark,wherewewerekindlyoffereddiscountedticketssothatthegroupwereabletoseemonkeys,bigcatsandcheekyprairiedogs.
• AtCambridgeUniversityBotanicGardens,aclassroomwasmadeavailableforcraftactivities.
• Puntingwasparticularlypopular,withScudamore’sprovidingtwofreepuntswithguidesandafurtheroneatadiscountedrate.
• AnotherhighlightwasatriptoElyasguestsofElyRefugeeResettlementCampaign,duringwhichthegroupwereaccompaniedbyacaseworkerfromCambridgeCityCouncil.ElyCathedralinvitedthegrouptolunchandthechildrenhelpedtotranslatetheguidedtourofthebuildingintoArabic.Afterawalkaroundthetownandalongtheriver,theyreturnedtoCambridgebytrain.
Thevisitswereallbypublictransporttogivethefamiliessomeexperienceandconfidenceinusingbusesandtrains.ThehighlightofthewinterholidayswasavisittothePantoattheCambridgeArtsTheatre,whichwasverywellattendedbybeneficiaryfamiliesandvolunteers.InFebruary2018CRRCwasgenerouslyinvited,forthesecondyearinarow,toattendtheconcertofNatachaAtlasaspartoftheAhbabfestivalatTheJunction.InMarch,CambridgeUnitedFootballClubofferedticketstoamatchagainstSwindonTown,attendedbyover30familymembers,andlaterarrangedforastadiumtourduringtheEasterbreak.TheEasterholidaysalsosawapopularForestSchoolinMiltonCountryPark,wherethechildrenlearnedwoodlandcraftsandskillssuchaswhittling.

Donations/supportforthehomeTheDonationsteamhaveworkedveryhardtomeetthefamilies'needsfordonationsandequipment.Theyhaveadvertisedtheneedsonourwebsite,socialmediaandthroughwordofmouth,createdpartnershipswithorganisationssuchasCambridgeReuse,LittleBundles,OWLandothers,dealtwiththelogistics,organisationandtransportationofdonateditems,andmanagedthedonationswehaveinstoragesothatwedonotamasslargeamountsofdonatedgoods.Thesystemofaskingforspecificdonationsratherthanacceptingalargevarietyofunspecifiedgoods,hasproventobeverysuccessful,andwhenwehavetostoreitemsfortemporaryperiodswehavebenefitedfromthegeneroususeofasupporter'sgarageinCambridge.Oftenequipmentandsportsclothesforchildrenandchildcareareonthewishlist,butalsowarmclothesforchildrenofschool-goingage,andtheparents,inparticularwomen.

hasshowntobeessentialformostoftheminordertogetaroundsafely,withsupportofadedicatedvolunteerforbikemaintenanceandtrouble-shootingandnumerousvolunteerswhohaveassistedwithtransportationofbikesatthepointofdonation.
Allofthesedonationsmakearealdifferencetoourbeneficiaries.Wedeeplythankthemany,generousdonorsandthevolunteerswhoactresponsivelywhendeliveriestofamiliesarerequired.Grantsforchildren’sactivities/communityactivitiesCRRCgivesfinancialsupportforcommunity-basedactivities(e.g.sports)tobeneficiaries,inparticularly,butnotexclusively,childrenandwomen.ThishasenabledthebeneficiarychildrentofindoutwhatCambridgehastoofferafterschool:Halfadozenboysandgirlsareregularlyplayingfootball,whileothershavehadagoattrampolining,artclassesandevenmartialarts.CRRCassiststhechildreninfindinganactivitytheyenjoy,andsupportsthemwithgrantstopayformembershipfeesandtobuythenecessaryequipment.Inaddition,weareproudtobeliaisingwithAccessArt,whohavealreadygenerouslyprovidedCRRCwithcomplimentarymembershipoftheirorganisation.Thishasenabledamemberofabeneficiaryfamilytoattendcreativeworkshopsaspartofacharitablescholarship.

EmergencyHardshipGrantsCRRChasprovidedseveralemergencyhardshipgrantsand-loanstolocalrefugees,whowereexperiencingseverehardshiporanemergency.Thistypeofsupportisintendedasashort-termsolution,ratherthanalong-termfinancialcommitment.IssueswithbenefitpaymentshaveaffectedseveraloftheresettledfamiliesinCambridge,causingserioushardship.Theapplicationprocessforahardshipgrantisoverseenbythetrusteesandfollowstheemergencyhardshipgrantpolicy.CRRCalsoactsasadistributorofvouchersfortheCambridgeFoodbankforbeneficiariesinespeciallydifficultcircumstances.

TheyeartoJune2018sawCRRCcontinuetocampaignfortheresettlementofmorerefugeefamiliesintheareaandweensuredthatrefugeeswereonthelocalpoliticalagendabyjointlyorganisinghustingsforboththemayoralelectionsinApril2017andtheGeneralElectioninMay2017.Theseweresuccessfullypromotedwithpressreleases,achievinggoodcoveragefromthelocalpress.InpartnershipwithCambridgeCityofSanctuary,wehostedamajorpublicdebateduringRefugeeWeek2017attheIntellectualForumatJesusCollege,hostedbyformerCambridgeCityMPJulianHuppert.Thisalsoreceivedgoodpresscoverage,inparticularforcallstoinstitutearefugeebursaryschemeatCambridgeUniversity.Asinpreviousyears,ourstallattheStrawberryFairinJune2017offeredinformationandadvicetoencouragemorevolunteeringandawarenessofrefugeematters.AnewlogowasinstitutedinMay2018andtheprocessbegunofre-designingtheCRRCwebsite.Themainfocusofouractivitieswasthroughsocialmedia.PostsonourmainFacebookpageregularlyreceived500hits,withboostedposts(suchaspetitions)achievingover1,000.OurFacebookgrouphadover950members.CallsfordonationsofspecificitemsaswellasforvolunteersforparticularroleswereadvertisedsuccessfullythroughFacebook.WealsomaintainedaTwitteraccountandaregularnewsletter.ThenewsletterwasgivenanewlookforitsAutumn2017issueandcontinuedtoincludeshortnewsreportsonourownactivities,aswellasthoseofrelatedgroups,acknowledgementsofdonationsandsupport,announcementsandpromotionofevents.WiththeadventofnewGDPRrulesinMay2018,wesawaslightdipinsubscriptionsbutthesearegraduallybuildingupagain.ProfessionaldevelopmentopportunitiesWhileacknowledgingtherefugees’dependenceonlearningEnglish,wehavebeenlookingforwaystoenablethemtogetintoemployment,asimportanttotheirself-respectastotheirfinancialindependence.Weareexploringanumberofavenueshowbesttoobtaincertificates,findingemployerswillingtotakethemonastrainees,helpingwithCVsandinterviews,aswellaslinkingwithothersupportiveorganisationswhohavealreadydevelopedwaystohelp.Giventheyouthofourorganisation,thisisoneofourmajortasksfor2019-2020.

FinancialreviewandreservespolicyDuringthisfirstyearofoperations,thebudgethasbeenreviewedduringregulartrusteemeetings,ensuringthatnewexpenditureischeckedandauthorisedbythetrustees.TheBoardofTrusteesisresponsibleforensuringthatexpenditureremainswithinagreedlimits.Thenetreceiptsfortheyearwere£12,020.At30June2018,CRRC’sfreecashreserveswere£32,999.Thecharitydoesnothaveareservespolicy.Trusteesreviewspendingregularly,adjustbudgetsasrequired,encouragedonationswithinthelocalcommunityandplanfundraisingactivitiestoensurethatongoingandplannedsupportofbeneficiariesandallCRRC’sactivitiescanbecontinuedasplanned.PlansfortheFutureThetrusteesconfirmtheirongoingcommitmenttoworkinginsupportofrefugeesinCambridgeandCambridgeshire.Inthecomingyearwewillcontinuetomatureandgrowourreputationasatrustedorganisationandlocalcharityforpublicsupportofrefugees.Wewillcontinuetoencouragedonationswithinthelocalcommunityandwillendeavourtomaintainafruitfulrelationshipwithourmanyvolunteersandsupporters.Wewillalsoconsiderbroaderfundraisingactivitiesasappropriate,e.g.throughgrantapplicationorapplicationstoTrustFunds.CRRCbeneficiarieshaveleftfamilyandsupportnetworksintheirhomecountriesandscatteredacrosstheMiddleEastandEurope.TheyarrivewithlittletonoEnglish,havelowjobprospectsandhavetonavigatethecomplexbenefitssystem.Thereisoftenconfusion,home-sickness,fear,fatigue,illnessandseverepoverty,aswellasconstantbadnewsfromhomecountriesandfamilies.However,thereisalsoenormoushope,commitmentandadesiretoformnewcommunitiesandfriendships.Forarefugee,beingwelcomedintotheUKisjustthebeginningofanewstart.CRRCrecognizesthegreatchallengesfacedbythesefamiliesandindividualsandwearecommittedtocontinuingtosupportthemfindanewlifeinandaroundCambridge.
