CONTENTS HELLO
!!!!
Welcome to 2013 Truro & Penwith College Fal River Festival. Now in its eighth year, this unique Cornish festival is a celebration of life on the Fal River.
This stunning river, steeped in rich history and heritage, runs through an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty linking Truro and Falmouth.
The river helps the economy in this small corner of the world thrive and grow stronger year on year. It is enjoyed by thousands of visitors and cherished by the people who are fortunate enough to live here.
This 10-day festival celebrates everything that makes the river an inspiration to so many people. You’ll find art, music, drama, sport, food, walks, history, culture and more - all linked by a love of the river.
The Festival offers something for people of all ages and we hope that you will explore, discover and celebrate in its magic with us.

WELCOME AND
THANK YOU
As we prepare to enjoy the 8th Fal River Festival, we’d like to take this opportunity to thank the sponsors, supporters and friends, especially our title sponsor Truro & Penwith College, who have made the Festival possible.
Everyone’s continued involvement has allowed us to put on a really wide programme of events this year, in many different locations around this very special Cornish river.
Everything you need to enjoy the Festival is in this guide, including an overview of all the events on pages 4 and 5, and then each day covered in detail. We hope you’ll use it to plan your Festival week and to make sure you don’t miss a thing!
If you need any information throughout the Festival, including maps, ferry timetables and Mussel Cards, just call into the Festival Hub at the Fal River Visitor Information Centre on Prince of Wales Pier in Falmouth.

FRIDAY

Crafts of all shapes and sizes join our fleet of classic ferries as we mark the ceremonial passage of the beer from Truro to Falmouth for the start of the Fal River Festival.
The celebrations start as guests board the first boat at 3.30pm at Prince of Wales Pier in Falmouth. Other boats join the fleet throughout the afternoon and everyone meets at King Harry/Trelissick to make the final journey down to Falmouth
Harbour, including the A&P Group tugs, sponsors of the first day of the festival.
On board the ferries will be complimentary Skinner’s ale, soft drinks and pasties. If you have your own boat or craft, we would love for you to join the Beer Fleet and escort the beer down the Fal River – it really is the more the merrier!
At approximately 5.30, the Beer Fleet makes its grand entrance to Falmouth Harbour, which is
the cue for the A&P tugs to open their water cannons, always an amazing sight.
The fleet lands at Prince of Wales Pier at approximately 6pm. The Beer Fleet will then parade through town to Events Square, at the head of which will be the barrel of Skinner’s beer, accompanied by music from Truro School of Samba.
On arrival at Events Square, the party really begins!

College Fal River Festival.

stars. The bar will be open till late and dancing is guaranteed – you might even get to hit the dance floor with Skinner’s legendary Betty Stogs!
To really get the Festival underway, the marquee will host a showcase of some of the amazing musical talent that our title sponsor, Truro & Penwith College is nurturing.
Whether your taste is for cool jazz, hot rock or party pop, the evening’s line up is certain to have something to excite your eardrums and is your chance to hear some of tomorrow’s music

Kenneth Grahame stayed at the Greenbank Hotel in Falmouth in 1907. During his holiday he found inspiration on a boat trip from Fowey. Whilst passing the riverbanks, his thoughts turned to beginning the novel ‘The Wind in the Willows’.
The story began as a series of letters. Grahame wrote the first two Wind in the Willows letters which he sent to his son Alastair, while staying at the Greenbank Hotel.
During the Fal River Festival we will be giving you the opportunity to read a re-creation of these letters when you join us for lunch or High Tea any day from Friday 24th May until Sunday 2nd June. Paul Spooner specialises in a field known as ‘mechanical automata’.
He makes elaborate constructions from various materials - with a strong preference for wood - as much for the joy of making them, as to further any practical purpose.
Also known as ‘vintage hacking’, his work fuses the worlds of conceptual art, cartooning, engineering and theatrical set design.
Commissions can come from a variety of sources, including galleries, museums, theatre companies, private collectors and companies who require an elaborate contraption, including,
for example, Louis Vuitton. After studying Art and Design at Lancaster and Cardiff, he went on to carve out a reputation through Cabaret Mechanical Theatre, in Falmouth.
Opened in 1979 by founder Sue Jackson, it sold simple wooden toys alongside knitwear and ceramics, but went on to become an institution dedicated to mechanical automata, eventually relocating to Covent Garden in London in 1985, as its reputation and popularity grew.
He can talk for hours about these and other enterprises including his current project, a goat which will perform a handstand on top of a 3 metre pole!

A young, trainee teacher arrives at a failing school, determined to raise the aspirations of poverty-line pupils. As she struggles with a difficult class, she turns increasingly to her single, middle-aged mentor for help.
But her mentor has troubles of his own. Disillusioned, alienated, and recently bereaved after years of caring for his declining mother, he finds solace as the star of his own Fred Astaire fantasy. And now he’s looking to cast his own Ginger Rogers whether she wants to dance or not.
The unflinching reality of modern schools collides with the escapist 1920s glamour of Astaire and Rogers, with potentially horrifying consequences. Blending film and theatre, knife-sharp dialogue and dance, Cube Theatre presents AUBADE.

Performed by David MynneDirected by Simon Harvey Adapted by Andrew McPherson
Deft, daft, delightful...and definitely Dickens!
Christmas Eve, 1803. Pip, a seven year-old orphan boy, visits his mother’s grave. A frightening encounter with an escaped convict begins a series of events that will change his life forever.
Written by one of England’s greatest authors, Charles Dickens, Great Expectations is
the profound and complex story of Pip’s journey through life.
Some of his most memorable characters – the terrifying Magwitch, Joe Gargery the kind and generous blacksmith, the eccentric Miss Havisham, the cold and beautiful Estella, Mr Jaggers the pompous lawyer and Pip’s wise friend Herbert Pocket – are vividly brought to life in this anarchic and joyful telling of this glorious tale.
Using original words and speech (well, mostly!), David Mynne (Rabbit Theatre) will take you
Great Expectations by Charles DickensWI Hall, Webber St, Falmouth TR11 3AU, £8 / £6
His talent for putting such excellence into his performance with no other support than a chair, a table, a suitcase and a minimum of small props was truly amazing - not to be missed!
on a journey that brings you a ‘cast of thousands’ in this skilful, one-man adaptation of Charles Dickens’ epic novel.
Be prepared to be scared and amazed and cry and laugh ...a lot! Suitable for adults and accompanied children over 10. David Mynne is a Cornish based actor and a founder member of Kneehigh Theatre.

Sue Lewington River Fal Exhibition18 May - 9 June, 10.30am - 5.30pmTrelissick Gallery
Sue Lewington takes an artist’s journey along the River Fal. The resulting exhibition called ‘From Source to Sea’ is at The National Trust’s Trelissick Gallery.
Well known for her published sketchbooks of Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly, Sue’s paintings, drawings and sketches are detailed with observations and insights. From the upper reaches of a small brook to the expanse of Carrick Roads with Falmouth and its Docks, Sue’s curiosity and artist’s eye delights in discoveries as she travels along the River’s course. Scenery, wildlife, history and forgotten corners are captured in watercolour and pen often accompanied with notes.
The last day of the Festival gives you three different op-portunities to really get out and enjoy the Fal River and the Carrick Roads. “When I decided to follow the Fal from its source to the sea I had no idea how secretive the river is.
I soon learned to love its little glimpses of sparkling water, tiny lanes, bridges and muddy paths through the tree-lined banks and marshy valleys until the sliver of light in the distance became the huge expanse of the estuary.
Finally, I felt the river had become secret again disappearing in curving waves to the horizon.” Sue Lewington
As well as the exhibition, Sue’s work is available as a published sketchbook called ‘Fal - Source to Sea’ available from Trelissick Gallery priced £9.99.
She will also be running a workshop on watercolour painting at Trelissick on the 19th of May – details from Trelissick Gallery

A LITTLE HELP FROM OUR FRIENDS...
The “Friends of the Festival” scheme is an opportunity for organisations to benefit from the big profile that this popular event can offer.
We’d like to say a huge thank you to all of this year’s friends for helping support the 2013 Truro & Penwith College Fal River Festival.
The Festival is a not-for-profit event and it couldn’t be run without the support of our friends and sponsors.
Throughout the 10-days be sure to pop into the ‘Festival Hub’ at the Fal River Visitor Information Centre on the Prince of Wales Pier in Falmouth.
Here you’ll find all the latest goings on and detailed information about how to best enjoy the Festival.
Make sure you grab a Fal Mussel Card Visitor, our great value ‘hop-on hop-off’ travel pass that will give you unlimited travel on ferries, buses and trains during the Fal River Festival.
If you have any questions or need any further information about the Festival please email us on [email protected] or call 01326 741194.
