Dear Friends, As I write this, we have just concluded our “DreamLeaders” weekend here at All Saints. Pastor Jeff Linman was an inspiring leader as we began the process of naming our fears, concerns and anxieties about the future of our congregation, but also the exciting process of sharing our hopes and dreams for our future, as well as the obstacles that stand in our path. There were many great conversations! The Holy Spirit was active in our lives this weekend! But the process is only as good as our follow up. Over the next several months, your congregation council will be looking, dreaming and lifting up our future. Perhaps as separate “Dream Team” will form as a place to begin to discern what our next steps will be – perhaps that will take place in the council itself. All of this is still to be worked out, but the bottom line for me was that God has plans for us! We need to step out and trust and DREAM! Pastor Jeff lifted up a passage from the book of Ephesians, chapter 3, verse 20: “Now to him who by the power at work within us is able to accomplish abundantly far more than all we can ask or imagine...” What a great promise we have here – that God is able to ABUNDANTLY accomplish far more than we can even imagine! I ask for your prayers – and for your dreams and hopes for our future. All of us at the workshop were challenged to write prayers as we moved our way through the day’s conversations. One of the prayers I wrote was this: God, give us the courage to seek you and listen to the directions you are pointing us to. Help us to be emboldened to reach out and try new things, knowing that you are there leading the way. All things are possible with God – what an exciting time this is for our congregation!

In Christ,

Pastor Janet Wold

All Saints Sunday, November 4

The custom of commemorating all of the saints of the church on a single day goes back at least to the third century. All Saints Day celebrates the baptized people of God, living and dead, who make up the body of Christ. On this day or the following Sunday, many congregations will remember the faithful who have died during the past year. You are invited to submit names of your loved ones who have died in the past year. Beginning October 14, Sunday bulletins will include a form to submit names for inclusion in our prayers on November 4.

Library News Family Blessings by LaVyrle Spencer - 44-year old

widow, Lee Reston is enjoying life with her three children and the profitable florist business she has built. But her happiness turns to pain and grief when her oldest son, Greg is killed in a motorcycle crash. Greg's best friend breaks the news to Lee and becomes her source of strength, as well as a surrogate brother to his siblings. But his devotion turns to an affair with Lee, 15 years his elder, causing her to consider the feelings of her judgmental mother, prudish sister, and daughter who has a crush on Chris.

Fields of Grace by Kim Vogel Sawyer is donated by

Youth NEWS October 2018

We know that God is always at work for the good of everyone who loves him. They are the ones God has chosen for his purpose. ~Romans 8:28

The next youth event will be the annual trip to the Corn Maze on Tower Road, put on by Cornerstone Church in Byron on October 14. We will meet at the

maze at 5:30 pm and have fun as we make our way through. They usually have a fire pit there so we can roast some marshmallows and enjoy snacks

afterward. Bring $4.00 to enter the maze plus money for concessions if you choose. They usually have hot cocoa and a nice selection of baked

goods. This maze is fun for families, too! Dress weather appropriate and wear good walking shoes! Youth Group Planning Meeting

There will be a planning meeting for youth group on

Sunday, October 14th between services starting at

9:15 in the Youth Group Room. ALL are invited –

parents, youth, and members! The purpose of this

meeting is to discuss and plan for the continuation of

our youth group until we have a new leader.

2019 Budget Planning Begins The Finance Committee will be asking for budget input for 2019 from All Saints committees starting in September. Committees will receive a letter with a copy of the 2018 budget, current 2018 spending to date, and some prior year financial data to review so they can assess and make their input. We have gotten pretty good at budgeting to our needs. We do not have a lot of fluff or extras built into our budgets. We try to be realistic in estimating what we have spent and where we will go in the next year with our mission and ministries. Thanks to all who support this process!

Altar Guild–Save the Date! The annual Altar Guild meeting will be held on Saturday, January 5, 2019 at 9:00 am in the main conference room. Book Club

October's Book Club selection, Shadows of Lancaster County is a mystery by Mindy Starns Clark. Anna hoped she had left her past behind, but when her brother is missing and his wife asks for help, she comes out of hiding and heads back home. Using skills she learned in Silicon Valley, she follows the high-tech trail he left behind. It's a trail that leads from the simple world of the Amish to the world of DNA research and gene therapy. Anna soon realizes she has something others want and she must depend on her instincts, her faith in God, and the help of the Amish community. Join us on October 22 at 1:00 pm. If you'd like to be added to the list of those passing the book around, let us know or just come for the discussion.

Property News Our new furnace was installed on September 17. This is the main furnace for the office area. The old one was 18 years old and was very unreliable last heating season. We were fortunate in that the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) removed the tree that had fallen from our church property into the ditch on Route 2. We still have four large dead trees on our property on the bank by Route 2, one of which is to be removed for us as it's on the right of way of the road. We are working on getting quotes to remove the three dead trees on church property. The recent storms have made it difficult to get a hold of companies and/or individuals to give us estimates for their removal. Thanks to all of our volunteers who do a fabulous job keeping our grounds in good condition. It seems like the days of a dry August are gone and we'll be mowing until cold weather. Again thank you! Quilters

The quilters will not meet in October. The quilts, made in the last eleven months, will be on their way to Lutheran Relief Headquarters at the beginning of October. September is always the busiest month for us as the finished quilts are displayed in the sanctuary. After that, they are all boxed, labeled and taken to Rockford’s Zion Lutheran Church to begin the journey to Maryland and then shipped to areas in the world where they are needed most. This has been the fifteenth year that the quilters at All Saints have worked together making quilts. None of this would have been possible without your generous donations of Thrivent Action Grants, fabrics and sheets. So thank you so much for all your help. We plan to meet on November 1st to start all over again. Thank you Thank you to all who will be delivering Meals on Wheels for the month of October. Thanks for those who "walked for the poor" on September 29th, and all who made donations for the St. Vincent dePaul fundraisers. Your generosity is great appreciated!

Finance Report

Stewardship Dear Friends in Christ,

Do you consider yourself a disciple of Jesus? Do you consider yourself a steward?

Being a disciple and steward are two very important facets of our journey of faith as

God’s people in Christ. These two elements of our faith journey help us connect the

dots of everyday life and what it means to be followers of Christ as we live daily in

the midst of God’s grace in Christ.

Over the next few months, we will be involved with a ministry initiative entitled

“Growing as Disciples and Stewards.” We will explore together the faith/

discipleship practices of pray, study, worship, invite, serve, and give. With this

initiative, we will celebrate our ministry together as disciples of Jesus and explore

ways we can, as individuals, grow in our understanding and practice as disciples and

stewards.

Our Kick Off Sunday for “Growing as Disciples

and Stewards” is Sunday, October 28, 2018. We

begin our seven - week Stewardship program with

the faith/discipleship practice of PRAY on that

Sunday. Through sermons, Bible Studies, and

activities, we will explore what it means to be

growing disciples and stewards, connecting the dots

between faith, daily life, and our ministry as a

congregation.

An important component of our conversations of what it means to be a growing

disciple and steward, will be the Bible Studies each week highlighting the weekly

faith/discipleship practice. You are invited to be a part of these studies and

conversations of faith and discipleship. Our “Growing as Disciples and Stewards”

Bible Studies will be on Wednesday afternoons at 1:30 PM in the Main Conference

Room beginning October 31st.

Plan to be on hand in worship and join a “Growing as Disciples and Stewards” Bible

Study. How exciting it will be, as together, we grow as disciples of Jesus and

stewards of God’s rich gift of grace in our Lord Christ.

Growing in faith and discipleship together,

Steve Jones, Stewardship Chair
