Principal’s
Message
Last week we welcomed Ryder Alvey into Year 3.
This week we welcome back Terry and Micheal
Ede. Hopefully this is the start of many new
enrolments helping to reduce the impact of
possible job losses across the school in 2021. This
school was at 127 students only two years ago, so I
am confident with improved agricultural seasons
we can return to those numbers. Hopefully, the
department will look at the link between the
agricultural conditions and school numbers and
maintain staff rather than short term reductions.
The mine at Fifield that was either going to save us
creating a rental boom or create a traffic
apocalypse, seems to have gone remarkably quiet.
It appears to, yet again, been put in the too hard
basket because of ore prices, water supply, finance
or whatever. The sad truth is, this town relies of
three main sources of income: farming,
government workers and welfare. Welfare seems
to be flowing in abundance thanks to COVID-19
but farming and government workers are under
threat. This reduces numbers in schools short
term but when conditions pick up, quality staff are
hard to recruit. A very difficult situation for the people up the chain responsible for staffing
decisions. I realise stating the obvious that this
town struggles to support two schools, gains me
looks of disgust from many long term residents but
a town of 380 people with two schools is, if we are
rational rather than emotional, an unsustainable
situation.
COVID-19 restrictions on schools continue as part
of the new-normal of school operations. The
enhanced hygiene measures are likely to continue
until a vaccination or cure is found. Our students
have been as usual consistent and compliant with
all additional requests. Indeed, some students have
been washing their hands so much they have
developed dry skin and soreness. Please apply
some cream and a generous amount of praise to
your children for following these tight restrictions.
COVID-19 the mini-series, has caused the
cancellation of numerous events in this school. This
has the dual effect of robbing children of
opportunity but it also increases the stress on
some students. For example, when I was at school
I could tolerate Mrs O’Connor teaching Narrative
poetry (do not worry I still have no idea what it is
as well) because in Week 5 there would have been
an athletics carnival or a football trip. This broke
up the term and allowed a degree of tension to be
released.
Restrictions are gradually being reduced. In Term
3, excursions, inter-school visits, external
providers such as SRE will be allowed with increased hygiene measures. I have asked staff to
take every opportunity to get our children out of
Trundle for sport and other cultural activities next
term. A change of environment stimulates the
brain and allows children to learn through
experience to be immersed in environmental
stimulus.
Pasi Sahlberg is a research director of the Gonski
Institute for Educational Research which is part of
UNSW Sydney. Professor Sahlberg is a respected
educational researcher who is asked to consult the
educational systems across the world. He has
stated that students after the COVID-19 lockdown
should be given more brain breaks and stressed
the importance of activities such as music and art.
This is against the view of some educational
commentators who want intensive Literacy and
Numeracy instruction. Again when delivering a
wedding cake to a colourful Sydney crime boss’
daughter, balance is the answer.
The school will report on your child’s semester
one progress in Week 2, next term. This is well
ahead of the Week 6 deadline set by the
Department. This will allow for a more
comprehensive Semester 2 report. This is the plan
at this stage. However, at the start of the year we
did not suspect bushfires, COVID-19 lockdowns
and millions of people to be out of work, so plans could change. It may be an idea to put up the
Christmas tree and call off the rest of 2020 as it
has been a shocker.

In Sunday’s Telegraph newspaper which is usually a
fountain of educational research and quality
literature was an article on public schools. NSW
public schools are some of the most judged and
commented upon schools in the world. Also,
negatives sell news, not the millions of positive
things that occur in schools each day. In one
paragraph, Mark Scott who is the head of the
Department of Education was quoted in saying that
schools need to offer a greater range of
vocationally based subjects for those students who
are not wanting to sit the HSC but would prefer a
trade based pathway. Those people that regularly
read this newsletter would realise that I have been
stating the same thing for at least 6 years. The Department is getting me way too cheap. The
reduction in the status given to the trades and this
false perception that the HSC is the only exit
credential for school is disgraceful, naive and
dangerous in my opinion.
The protest movement that started in America has
spread across the world. Almost faster than
COVID-19. Some children are asking about why
people are protesting despite the danger of
COVID-19 infection. I suspect the reasons are
varied and complex but one thing I cannot explain
to children is the defacing of statues and
monuments. Spray painting a statue does not
change the thought process and actions of the past
or establish a platform for reform in the future, so
to me it is meaningless destruction. This is the only
way I can describe it to senior students. An
Aboriginal politician was on ABC today and I think
expressed an opinion beautifully. These figures that
are being defaced and labelled racist were living in
a different time, but are part of history. Why not
create monuments to people in Aboriginal history
that were significant in culture and bringing about
reform. Such as those people that were involved in
The Uluru Statement. I could not agree more.

Ajax’s
Weekly Woof
Woof Woof Awards: 500 happy woofs to primary. The preparation for
your virtual assembly looks amazing. A virtual
assembly is not the best, but it is the world we are
living in at the moment. I even have to face time my
girlfriend. It is not the same as gazing into her eyes
and smelling the Pal on her breath. Chasing my tail
is not as good as chasing hers. It is hard when she
lives on a farm with 25 of her brothers and sisters.
500 happy woofs to students for not feeding me.
Southo said I would need a reversing buzzer on my
backside if I put on more weight. Note, perfect
birthday present for the old cranky guy, a mirror!
500 happy woofs to Trundle Services club for
having the courage to conduct a community survey.
The town owns the club and should have a say. Well done!
5000 happy barks to all the boys who are polite
and respectful around women. You boys obviously
have realised that women really run the world. For
those of you that are not, Southo is on the war
path as it is his pet hate, other than Manly. Get
over the 1978 grand final. It was a long time ago.
5000 happy barks to those members of the
community that positively promote our town.
Survival is not only a show on television it is
something proactive innovative towns do. Public
education, imagine a Labrador understanding
proactive and innovative.
5001 to Mr Mark Scott, boss of the Education
department. Finally vocational subjects and
developing students with skills for employment in
the trades is becoming important again. We need
doctors and lawyers, but they usually do a crap job
of fixing your car. All skills are important.
500 angry growls to those people who have stopped dropping in and checking on people since
Senior Constable Budd has been on duty in
Trundle. He tries but even he cannot get around to
check on all the people for that 5 minute drop in.
In the Sunday paper public education got another
bashing. It is easy to criticise schools because they
cannot fight back. It seems funny that when the
COVID-19 nightmare was in full force the opening
of schools were vitally important for the nation.
Public schools also are transparent without a team
of old boy lawyers for the cover up when
something happens.
Bark with laughter with

He was a boxer!

We have some fabulous events coming up over the
next few weeks so stay tuned……
Simultaneous Storytime
Last week the students participated in the
Simultaneous Storytime in their classrooms. We
postponed this event from its original date as it was
the student’s first full week back at school. Over
the week the students participated in classroom activities based around the story ‘Whitney and
Britney Chicken Divas’.
Harmony Day
Harmony Day is usually
celebrated on March 21st.
Unfortunately, this date was the
beginnings of uncertain times
and many events were either
postponed or cancelled.
Now more than ever, an understanding of inclusiveness, respect and a sense of belonging for
everyone is a vital.
This year the students from K-6 will participate in a
walkathon. The student will walk laps of the oval
with a partner, stopping at the end of each lap,
changing walking partners and using this lap to
initiate conversation around the concepts of
inclusivity, respect for themselves and each other
and kindness towards peers. The goal of our
walkathon is not to raise money but awareness.
Harmony day is usually represented by the colour
of orange but for our Trundle Central School
Harmony day the students will be asked wear
bright colours. They can come in as many colours
as they can possible add to an outfit, remembering
that their outfit needs to be practical as they will be
walking on the oval. We will be following the social
distancing guidelines during this fun activity.

Year 9/10 students Star Reading
Secondary incorporated Star Reading Program into their English classes which entails reading a book
of their choice for 20 minutes in each English class. All students were tested and placed in their reading
levels. After finishing the book, each student has to complete an online quiz to demonstrate the
understanding of the book. The aim of the program is to improve reading skills and consequently
enhance writing skills as a part of the 2020 School Plan.
