By serving, whether by greeting, ushering, teaching, singing, giving, clip- ping box tops, helping outreach projects, cooking, tending the grounds, dancing, managing the library, baking, quilting, praying, photographing, running audio-visual equipment, playing instruments, or being part of a fellowship group, you fulfill God’s purpose for your life. TrumpetStained Coff ee Pot

A couple Sundays ago I was helping cleanup and noticed the coff ee pot was quite stained. Well, with some help I tried cleaning it. Our eff orts made little diff erence and I went on my way. Over the next couple weeks the coff ee pot kept coming to mind. I fi nally got the proper things and cleaned it.

Sometimes God has a funny way of letting us know what we are to do to serve Him. By serving, whether by greeting, ushering, teaching, singing, giving, clip-ping box tops, helping outreach projects, cooking, tending the grounds, dancing, managing the library, baking, quilting, praying, photographing, running audio-visual equipment, playing instruments, or being part of a fellowship group, you fulfi ll God’s purpose for your life.

Now, God wants to help you fulfi ll His purpose for you. When we serve others, they get a picture of our heavenly Father. “For we are God’s workman-ship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.” Ephesians 2:10(NIV) So, how do we know what good works to do? Th ere are so many good causes. Sometimes we just know we are to do something. It is perfectly

clear the moment the opportunity is discovered. Many times though, we do not recognize the task set before us by God. God will send you many messages so that you will not miss the way He has planned for you. Ministry, serving others, is more than an opportunity of a lifetime, God off ers an opportunity beyond your lifetime.

Serving others has great rewards here on earth; fi rst, is the fulfi llment of a job well done selfl essly, build-ing friendships in a Christian community during group projects, the possibility of bringing someone to Christ as they witness your example. With rewards come risks. Fear and doubt of being adequately equipped often hinder our ability to step forward and say YES I can do and will do that. But our greatest fear should not be of failure, but of succeeding at something that does not really matter.

Th ere are always opportunities to serve. We have to take the fi rst step to serve and succeed. Just say YES.

It is time once again for Moun-tainside to partner with the East Mountain Food Pantry to help our neighbors during the Christ-mas season! It seems the earlier we begin collecting... the more families are helped each year! Just bring a non-perishable food donation to church each Sunday and place it in the collection box in the entry-way. Donations of small sturdy card-board boxes (computer paper boxes are ideal) are also helpful as we sort and store the canned goods weekly upstairs in the youth classroom.

Suggested items for each week:Week Of:Sept. 12 canned meatsSept. 19 canned green beansSept. 26 jars of peanut butterOct. 3 jelly/preservesOct. 10 canned cornOct.17 canned beans, re-fried beansOct. 24 canned soups (esp. cream of mushroom)Oct. 31 canned fruitsNov. 1 canned cranberry sauceNov. 7 salad dressings, gravy, salsaNov. 14 pastas and saucesNov. 21 boxed stuffingNov. 28 dry beans and riceDec. 5 cake mix, frosting and pie fillingDec. 12 candy canes, flour, sugar, oil, spices

We will meet in the fellowship hall on Saturday December 18th at 9 am to assemble the boxes. At last count the EMFP was helping more than 130 local families! This outreach has been proven to cure the toughest cases of "Holiday Blues" as we see God's love in action. Please plan to join us!

East Mountain Food PantryWe had the mission trip to McCurdy to support

them. We also collect box tops and Campbell’s soup labels for McCurdy School. Winnie Pearsall will be delivering these the third week of October, so bring those box tops and labels you’ve been saving. We need a little time to trim and sort them. There is a bag on the bulletin board in the hall way for box tops and Campbell’s soup labels. Any questions contact Mary Brink 506-4501, [email protected] .

Wednesday Night ClassThe Life and Ministry of the Messiah

What would it be like to haul in a miraculous draft of fish at the command of the Master . . . or hear the ram's horn sound from Herod's temple at the very moment when Jesus is breathing his last breath? In the month of October our Wednesday Night Class is doing another study with Ray Vander Laan and going on location through video to se the sights and sounds of the places of Jesus’ ministry. Feel free to join us any Wednesday night from 7-8 p.m. in the Sanctuary

Asbury Café UpdateMany thanks to all the

Mountainside UMC peo-ple who have helped make the Asbury Café ministry at the State Fair such a success. Th e folks listed below made pie dough, rolled out crusts, mixed

all kinds of fruit for fi lling, fi lled the pies, crimped the tops, froze the made pies, baked the frozen pies, collected the pies at the church, and transported them down to Asbury UMC for pickup (whew, that’s a lot of stuff ).

Pie Team: Elaine Koslowski, Pat Luna, Barbara Burkdoll, Beth Cliff ord, Betty Zimmerman, JoAnn Cahill, Loreta Crawford, Connie Patterson, Rita Crawford, Barbara Manzanares, Kaeli Manzanares, Laura Crew (plus Chuck Champlin who baked a bunch), Julie Hall and friends, Cathy McReynolds, Karen Blackmore, Ann Merkley, and Janet VanAllen.

Th e famous Mountainside Pie Team made around

80 pies (we had signed for 50) which were sold at the Asbury Café during the fair. Proceeds of around $55,000 is expected this year and will be distributed to eight charities in the Albuquerque who have a mission to feed the hungry. Interviews with fair-goers who sampled the pies provided feedback that the Moun-tainside pies were “excellent”. Of course what would you expect from hardcore Methodists?

Th anks again and God bless. Bob VanAllen
