Fred Trump, who died in 1999, was a self-made construction mogul who began his career in the late 1920s by building houses in the Queens district of New York. He founded the monumental real estate corporation that Donald Trump runs to this day.

He gave his son the Manhattan district of New York in the mid-1970s, lending him money to get established in the trade, and by the time he died in 1999 was worth an estimated $300m (£215m). He bought a new Cadillac every three years with the number plate 'FCT' but otherwise rejected ostentatious displays of wealth. He collected unused nails at his construction sites to avoid wasting money.

Friedrich Drumpf (changed his name to Trump)was born in Kallstadt, Palatinate, then part of the Kingdom of Bavaria, to Christian Johannes Drumpf and Katharina Kober. The Trump family were Lutherans, as were most residents in the town, although Bavaria was majority Catholic. Trump’s earliest known ancestor, the lawyer Hanns Drumpf, was recorded in Kallstadt in 1608. The Palatinate, then a relatively impoverished region, has been known for its viticulture since the Roman Empire. After the devastation during the Thirty Years' War, the family had the opportunity to become winemakers.He emigrated to the United States at the age of 16 and started working

as a barber. Several years later in 1891, he moved to the Northwest. He made his fortune operating boom-town restaurants and boarding houses in Seattle and a mining town to the north, and in the Klondike Gold Rush. He later returned to Germany and married. When authorities found that he had emigrated when young to avoid fulfilling his military service, he lost his Bavarian citizenship; he and his family returned to the United States.

Trump returned to Kallstadt in 1901 as a wealthy man. Biographer Blair said that "the business of seeing to his customers’ need for food, drink and female companionship had been good to him. He quickly met and proposed to Elisabeth Christ (October 10, 1880 – June 6, 1966), daughter of a neighbor; she was much younger than Trump, and had been 5 years old when he left town. Trump’s mother disapproved of Christ because she considered her family to be of a lower social class. Trump and Christ married on August 26, 1902, and moved to New York City.At his death his net holdings included a 2-story, 7-room home in Queens; 5 vacant lots; $4,000 in savings; $3600 in stocks; and 14 mortgages. Altogether his net value was $31,359 ($499,900 today). Elizabeth Sr. and Fred continued his real estate projects under the Elizabeth Trump & Son moniker.
