Detroiters can get ready to rock because Chevy’s Rockin’ on the Riverfront concert series is about to begin. On models equipped with an available 12-inch, all-digital in- strument display, drivers will see an industry-first, video-game-like Smokin’ Mustang Peels Out With New-Line Lock Feature HELSINKI (AP) – Volvo plans to build only electric and hybrid ve- hicles starting in 2019, making it the first major automaker to abandon cars and SUVs powered solely by the internal combus- tion engine. CEO Hakan Samuelsson said the move was dictated by cus- tomer demand. It means that in two years, all new Volvo vehicles will have some form of electric propulsion. The rest of the auto industry is likely to make similar moves in a few years, said Sam Abuelsamid, senior analyst for Navigant Re- search, with luxury automakers leading the way. “I think we’ll probably see most of the premium brands do the same thing in roughly the same time frame,” he said. “More high-volume mainstream brands will be a little slower.” In order to meet government fuel economy requirements worldwide, automakers are de- veloping more hybrid systems that use both gas engines and electric motors. Many are 48-volt “mild hybrids” that assist a gas engine to move a car to make it more efficient, improving gas mileage by 10 or 15 percent, Abuelsamid said. Such systems generate enough electricity to allow au- tomakers to move functions such as air conditioners and wa- ter and oil pumps to electric power, getting rid of mechanical belts that are a drag on the en- gine. Those systems can run on- ly when needed, and that can save another 2 or 3 percent on Volvo To Offer Only EV and Hybrid Engines by TOM KRISHER AP Auto Writer DETROIT (AP) – Ford, General Motors, Fiat Chrysler and Hyundai all reported U.S. sales drops last month, apparently dragging the industry to its sixth straight month of declining num- bers as auto sales slow from last year’s record pace. Fiat Chrysler sales were down 7.4 percent, while Ford said its sales declined 5.1 percent. GM was off 4.7 percent and Korean automaker Hyundai posted a hefty 19.2 percent decrease. Analysts are predicting an overall June drop of more than 2 percent when all sales numbers come in this week, even though Toyota, Nissan and Honda each reported small gains. If June sales fall as expected, sales for the first half of the year would be down for the first time since the financial crisis in 2009. But Autotrader senior analyst Michelle Krebs said a small dip is not an indication of economic troubles since unemployment is low and consumer confidence re- mains high. She doesn’t expect a big recovery in the second half of the year, but also doesn’t see a huge decline, predicting full-year sales from between 16.8 million to 17.3 million. That’s below last year’s record of 17.55 million. “We think the second half could be a little bit stronger than the first half was,” says Krebs, who expects 2016 still to be the fifth-best year on record. “We don’t see any imbalances that suggest anything is going to col- lapse.” Krebs says sales should re- main healthy even though credit is tightening slightly and auto- makers are cutting back on sweet lease deals. “We’re down but not out,” she said. DETROIT (AP) – Mazda is re-calling more than 307,000 carsbecause the parking brake maynot fully release or could fail tohold the cars, increasing the riskof a crash.The recall covers certain Maz-

da 6 cars from the 2014 and 2015model years and the Mazda 3from 2014 through 2016.The company says water can

get into the brake caliper, caus-ing a shaft to corrode and bind. Ifthat happens, the parking brakecan get stuck in the on positionor fail to fully engage. That canlet the cars roll unexpectedly ifparked on a slope.The problem affects only cars

with a hand-operated parkingbrake lever system, according todocuments posted June 30 bythe U.S. National Highway TrafficSafety Administration.The company got its first re-

port of the problem in April of2015 in Canada but decided tomonitor it because it hadn’t re-ceived other reports. By Febru-ary of 2017 Mazda had 13 re-ports in the U.S. of the problemhappening on both models. Ittraced the cause to a sealingboot that wasn’t keeping waterout.A company spokeswoman in

the U.S. says more than 307,000cars were recalled in the U.S.,Canada, Puerto Rico, Guam andSaipan.Owners will be notified start-

Along with breaking ground fora new Vehicle Test Center build-ing at its North American head-quarters in Auburn Hills on June26, FEV North America, Inc.(FEV) unveiled plans to furtherexpand its campus, with the con-struction of a new building.Jochem Wolschendorf, execu-

tive vice president of FEV NorthAmerica, said that the expan-sions are needed because FEVhas outgrown its original facilityin Auburn Hills.The Vehicle Test Center Build-

ing construction, Wolschendorfsaid, will take about a year. Oncethat building is up and running,FEV will begin construction ofthe newly announced facility.“We have taken a two-phase

approach,” Wolschendorf said.“Phase One is the Vehicle TestCenter building. Phase Twostarts in a year. This building willcontain offices and labs.“The ultimate goal of all the

servicing all those vehicles willstill be a challenge. Model S andModel X owners are already wor-ried about having to share Tes-la’s company-owned chargingstations with an influx of newcars. And while Tesla is promis-ing to increase its network ofstores and service centers by 30percent this year, it began 2017with just 250 service centersworldwide. That leaves many po-tential owners miles from a serv-ice center.Musk has said a new fleet of

mobile service trucks will be de-ployed to help customers whoare far from service centers.

Cars’ communications sys-tems have the ability to “talk” toother cars. Now, Cadillac is test-ing a system that will allow carsto talk to the road.Cadillac’s CTS sedan, one of

the first production vehicles inthe world to contain Vehicle-to-Vehicle (V2V) communication,has now successfully demon-strated Vehicle-to-Infrastructure(V2I) capability in Michigan.Cadillac CTS development ve-

hicles received real-time datafrom traffic controllers on signalphasing and timing during suc-cessful demonstrations recentlyconducted in collaborationwith Michigan road agencies,said Cadillac spokesman SteveMartin.V2I connects the Cadillac de-

velopment vehicles to its sur-rounding infrastructure, allow-ing the vehicle to alert thedriver when there are safety,mobility or environment-relatedconditions ahead, Martin said.The traffic signals, located ad-

jacent to the GM Warren Techni-cal Center campus at the inter-sections of 12 Mile and 13 Mileroads, were able to send real-time data using Dedicated Short-Range Communications (DSRC)protocol to the development ve-hicles, which alerted the driversof a potential red light violationat current speed.This alert helps avoid the dan-

gerous decision to either brakeabruptly or accelerate through abusy intersection.To ensure the privacy of the

driver, the vehicles do not trans-

mit any identifying informationsuch as VIN number, registrationor MAC address, in their mes-sages, Martin said.For example, if a connected

car runs a red light, the trafficsignal may be able to say some-one ran a red light, but will notbe able to say who or what vehi-cle.As for cybersecurity, firewalls

and other measures are used toensure the DSRC signals cannotbe interfered with and are onlyexchanged between the vehicleand the infrastructure.This is similar to the encryp-

tion used on Cadillac’s V2V tech-nology.The Michigan Department of

Transportation, Macomb Coun-try Department of Roads, andGeneral Motors’ Research & De-velopment are collaborating to

showcase leadership in the con-nected and automated vehicleenvironment. Development ofsafety technologies, such as V2Vand V2I communications, laysthe groundwork for a connect-ed, safer future.Cadillac’s V2V solution uses

GPS for positioning and DSRCfor communication, which canhandle 1,000 messages per sec-ond from vehicles up to about1,000 feet away. V2V-equippedvehicles create an ad hoc wire-less network that allows for thetransfer of information withoutrelying on sight lines, goodweather conditions or cellularcoverage.V2V is included as a standard

feature on the 2017 CTS sedan inthe U.S. and Canada and comple-ments a robust suite of availableactive safety features

Camaro will take the forefrontat the 2017 GM Tech Center-UAWLocal 160 Employee Car ShowJuly 26.The show at the Tech Center

will celebrate 50 years of theCamaro.UAW Local 160 car show repre-

sentative Nick Alexander said theshow will be open to the publicat no charge. It starts at 10 a.m.and lasts until 2 p.m.“The show will be by the

Mound entrance to the Tech Cen-ter,” Alexander said.“In previous years, we held the

show in the parking lots near theVEC building off of Van Dyke. Butlast year, we held it by theMound entrance because of con-struction near the VEC building –and it proved to be a success, sowe’re holding it there again thisyear.”Jim Suzak, a manager in Design

Fabrication at the Tech Center, ishandling GM’s side of things forthe show. The Camaro thememakes sense given the storiedhistory of the vehicle that wasfirst produced in the model year1967.“We really like putting on this

show,” said Suzak, “because itgives those of us who work forGM, both salaried and hourly, thechance to show off our passionfor cars and to see what otherpeople at the company havebeen up to.

“It also allows us to celebratethe great history of GM vehiclesand the design and engineeringthat went into the cars that builtthis company.”It’s not uncommon, Suzak said,

for people at GM to have spenttime and money restoring orsouping up a classic muscle carand not have any co-workers beaware of what’s been done.“By showing off our cars at the

show, our co-workers can seewhat we’ve been spending all ourfree time on,” Suzak said.“I myself in past years have

shown off my 2000 Pontiac Fire-bird at the show. But I won’t bedoing that this year because Isold the car.”Suzak said that he originally

bought the vehicle back in 2012.“I wanted the restoration of the

black Firebird to be a family proj-ect,” Suzak said. “I wanted mythree sons – Garrett, Austin andConrad – to learn how to usetools and how to work on a car.“My plan proved successful.

They really enjoyed the projectand they are now good with toolsand have car projects of theirown.”Suzak said that part of the

restoration was dropping an LS2Corvette engine into the Firebird.“The car was originally pow-

ered by a simple six-cylinder en-gine,” Suzak said.“I was able to buy the vehicle

from the proverbial little old la-dy. This one was from Livonia,

not Pasadena. But the vehiclewas in good shape for one thatwas more than a decade old.”Suzak said he and his sons had

fun restoring the Firebird andthey posted photos of the vehi-cle on various Internet forums.The vehicle proved popular withpeople who saw the photos onthe forum pages.In fact, Suzak said, that’s how a

car fan from Dubai became awareof the vehicle.“He saw photos I posted and

contacted me with an offer tobuy the car,” Suzak said.“I am fully aware of the fact

that there are scams out therewhere people from overseas buycars with phony checks. I wascareful and checked out the offer.It was legitimate.“I ended up getting $23,000 for

the Firebird, which is certainlymore than I could have gotten bytrying to sell it here in the Statesby myself. I got the money andsent off the Firebird last year.”Suzak said he still has the

money and is looking for his nextrestoration project – somethingin the neighborhood of aCorvette Z06 from 2010 or there-abouts.“That’s my story,” Suzak said.

“Every car that will be on displayat the show will have its own sto-ry. That’s what’s so great aboutthis event.“And I want to emphasize that

all the money raised at the showgoes to charity. This year we are

Nearly 4,000 feet of fiberglass-chemical polymer pipe – 9 feet, 2inches in diameter – has begunto arrive in Fraser to repair thecollapsed sewer interceptoralong 15 Mile Road. The $2.5 mil-lion worth of pipe will both re-pair the collapsed section of pipeand line an adjacent 3,700 feet ofsewer deemed as being at immi-nent danger of collapse.“The arrival of this pipe marks

another milestone in this mas-sive project. I am very pleased toreport that this project remainson schedule and on budget,” saidMacomb County Public WorksCommissioner Candice S. Miller.“All of the contractors, the gov-ernment agencies, the neighbors– everyone involved in this proj-ect – have worked together as ateam to get us to this point.”The new pipe was manufac-

tured by the Hobas company,which is based in Texas. It is inthe process of being shipped tothe work site in 20-foot seg-ments, known as “sticks.” It willbegin to be installed in early Au-gust. Final completion of thesewer line repair is expected tobe completed by the end of Sep-tember, with the re-opening of 15Mile Road expected by the end ofthe year. The repair became nec-essary after the 11-foot diameterpipe under 15 Mile Road col-lapsed on Christmas Eve 2016,causing a sinkhole to develop.The sewer line is owned by the

Macomb Interceptor DrainDrainage District and managedby the Public Works Office.The pipe was purchased at

2014 prices, leveraging a previ-ous purchase of similar pipe forthe Oakland-Macomb Interceptor

as part of a maintenance project.With the purchase of the pipe,

Miller noted that all the majorcomponents of the project weremade in America – steel from In-diana and pipe from Texas. All ofthe major contractors on theproject are based in the Detroitregion, with the largest contrac-tor, Dan’s Excavating, and thelead engineering firm, Anderson,Eckstein & Westrick, both basedin Shelby Township.“Here in Macomb County, we

appreciate the value of thewords ‘Made in America.’ Ameri-can-made products, installedwith local expertise, ensures wewon’t be standing out here in an-other sinkhole again on 15 MileRoad,” she said.Some details about the work.

deep on the east end and 40 feeton the west.

BRUSSELS (AP) – The Euro-pean Union on July 5 approvedFrench automaker PSA’s acquisi-tion of Opel and British brandVauxhall from General Motors.The EU’s executive Commis-

sion said that the body has givenunconditional approval to thedeal, making it possible for thesale of Opel and Vauxhall to becompleted.It “concluded that the transac-

tion would raise no competitionconcerns in the relevant mar-kets.’’After losing money in Europe

for years, General Motors an-nounced in March that it wouldsell Germany-based Opel and sis-ter brand Vauxhall to PSA in adeal worth 2.2 billion euros ($2.5billion).The now-approved acquisition

will make PSA the No. 2 Europeanautomaker after Germany’s Volk-swagen.PSA strategy director Patrice

The Lincoln Continental cameout at the top of a group of sixlarge cars recently evaluated bythe Insurance Institute for High-way Safety.The Continental qualified for

Top Safety Pick+, the Institute’shighest award, said David Zuby,IIHS executive vice president andchief research officer.“This group of large cars in-

cludes some with stellar ratings,but our small overlap front testremains a hurdle for some vehi-cles,” said Zuby.Vehicles qualify for either the

Top Safety Pick or Top Safety Pick+award if theyhave good ratings fromIIHS in five crashworthiness tests –small overlap front,moderate over-lap front, side, roof strength andhead restraints – and an availablefront crash prevention system thatearns a superior or advanced rating.To qualify for Top Safety Pick+,

a vehicle also must come withgood or acceptable headlights,Zuby said.The 2017 Continental is a new

vehicle with a revived modelname. It replaces the LincolnMKS. The Continental’s optionalfront crash prevention systemearns a superior rating.When equipped with the sys-

tem, the car avoided collisions inIIHS track tests at 12 mph and 25mph. The system also has a for-ward collision warning compo-nent that meets National High-way Traffic Safety Administration(NHTSA) criteria, Zuby said.The Continental’s LED projec-

tor headlights, an option on theReserve trim line, earn a goodrating, providing ample lightingon a straightaway and mostkinds of curves, Zuby said.They can be obtained with

high-beam assist, a feature thatautomatically switches betweenhigh beams and low beams, de-pending on the presence of other

vehicles. However, the vehicle isalso available with high-intensitydischarge (HID) lights that earn apoor rating.The IIHS’ latest report also

showed that the Tesla Model Sfell short of any award because itearns only an acceptable ratingin the small overlap front test.The Tesla Model S, Zuby said,

initially had earned an accept-able rating in the small overlaptest, which represents the type ofcrash that occurs when the frontdriver-side corner of a vehiclehits a tree or utility pole or col-lides with another vehicle.The main problem with the

performance of the Model S wasthat the safety belt let the dum-my’s torso move too far forward,allowing the dummy’s head tostrike the steering wheel hardthrough the airbag.Tesla made changes to the

safety belt in vehicles built afterJanuary with the intent of reduc-ing the dummy’s forward move-ment. However, when IIHS testedthe modified Model S, the sameproblem occurred, and the ratingdidn’t change, Zuby said.

Although the two tested vehi-cles had identical structure, thesecond test resulted in greater in-trusion into the driver’s spacebecause the left front wheelmovement wasn’t consistent.Maximum intrusion increasedfrom less than 2 inches to 11inches in the lower part and to 5inches at the instrument panel inthe second test.The first test resulted in a

good rating for structural integri-ty, while the second test resulted

in an acceptable structural rat-ing. The two tests’ structural rat-ings were combined, resulting inacceptable structure and an ac-ceptable rating overall for theModel S.The greater deformation in the

second test also resulted in dam-age to the left front corner of thebattery case. The deformationwas limited to an area that didn’tcontain battery cells in the test-ed vehicle, so this damage didn’taffect the rating.

Higher-performance variants ofthe Model S could have batterycells in this area, but, according toTesla, they also have differentstructure. They haven’t been test-ed separately and aren’t coveredby this rating, Zuby said.The Model S is only available

with headlights that earn a poorrating and hasn’t been rated yetfor front crash prevention. Whileautomatic braking comes stan-dard, the software for the featurewas only recently activated.
