the backstory: why, where, and when...

Why we sense this calling, and how it has taken shape...For almost 9 years I have had the immense privilege of serving on staff at one of the leading churches in the Northwest

Ministry Network. I love Stone Church. I love what I do. I have been so blessed to serve my Dad, who is one of the most

faith-filled, passionate, and skilled leaders I know. I wouldn’t trade my 9 years of experience with him and this church for

anything. Under his leadership I have seen this church grow, embark on faith adventures, and release key staff into

successful ministry and leadership roles.

For many years I have had in my heart and mind the idea that planting a church would be an adventure I would love to

undergo. Since I began in ministry I would be asked questions such as, “how long do you see yourself at Stone; in youth

ministry?” I would always reply, “I’m not sure, but some day, I think I would like to plant a church.” Throughout the 9

years here some seasons I really saw that as a reality, others seasons I had my doubts. Thinking it would be too hard.

Nonetheless, planting has always rolled around in the back of my heart and mind, as I wondered how God would lead

and direct my future.

During this past year, Annie and I both have felt in our spirits a stirring of change. I remember talking about it while on a

long drive to Portland. We felt like something new was about to emerge concluding and sensing that 2011 would be a

year of “clarity”.

In my spirit, the past month or two, I felt I heard the Holy Spirit whisper to me, “I am going to uproot you”. I heard this a

few times, and didn’t want to think about what it might mean. The stirring this past year, and more recently in prayer, my

long held dream of planting a church reached paramount clarity January 31, 2011.

Pastor and I sat down in his office for an unplanned heart to heart which emerged out of a conversation during lunch that

day about ministry and my leadership development. As we sat in his office for a couple hours discussing what we were

both sensing from the Holy Spirit, it was literally as if the heavens parted and I knew, and he knew, this was something I

must pursue. For me, this was a watershed moment, spiritually and emotionally. For the first time in at least a year, I knew

what I was going to do. I wasn’t playing out pros and cons between options, I wasn’t weighing the decision both

emotionally and intellectually. The fog was clear, I was convinced. It was as if the vision God had for our next step

dropped, clicked, and lodged into place. I felt faith in my spirit that I could do it, I could plant, and that God would be with

me.

I asked my Dad, “Did that just happen?” As I tried to reassure him that I didn’t get up that morning planning to come and

have a meeting to tell him how I really felt. My Dad and I talk often, very often in fact, about everything, and he knew how

much I wavered back and forth in trying to get a sense of what God had for my future in ministry. That day, January 31st,

I literally felt as if God had parted the clouds and made it abundantly clear to me His path and direction. I knew my Dad

sensed the same, as he looked across the desk at me after a couple of moments of silence and said, “So, when do you

want to do this?” I responded with my best judgment at that point and time, and he agreed. The adventure that God was

planning had began, and what a ride we were in for!

Where we sense God leading us...Coming to grips with the idea that God is calling you to plant a church is one thing. The next and most obvious questions

are where, and when? Then I suppose the huge strategic question of how? But before we get to those matters, let’s

start with the story of how we determined where God is leading us.

As I left the office that day after meeting with Pastor, sensing in my spirit what God was calling us to do. I went home

and talked with Annie discussing with her what had transpired. I didn’t even know how to broach the subject so I started

with the shocking, ”We are going to move... and probably within the next year”. As only my wife can, she responded,”Did

you get in a fight with your Dad?” “No” I replied, “We are going to plant a church”. She responded in with passionate

agreement right away as we began praying and dialoguing about where we may go.

For as long as I can remember, I have always said I never wanted to live in Spokane. It was so far from Seattle, I wasn’t

sure I could bear it. However, over the past 6 months, my heart has really been opened to it. We visited Spokane in the

summer of 2010 for a friend’s wedding, and while staying there we both talked about how we could see ourselves living

there.

Our early direction received confirmation after meeting with the church planting director for the Northwest Ministry

Network. Affirming the need for more churches in Spokane, and felt the location was a great match to Annie and my

personalities. With a sense of early leaning and encouragement from Pastor and other leaders, Annie and I set out to

Spokane for a weekend to see in fact if our openness to the Spokane area was part of God’s bigger plan in calling us

specifically to start a church.

Throughout our time in the Spokane area, we completely knew that it was the place God was calling us to plant in. It’s

hard to explain, but when you see it, you just know. When you sense God leading your life, you just smile. This is exactly

how we felt.

Specifically, while visiting the Spokane area I felt I received a vision to do something drastic, something unanticipated. We

felt called to start a church with two different regional locations from the beginning. One church: Two locations. One

location being in the South Hill area targeting reaching young families. The other in the North Spokane area targeting

university students, and twenty-somethings. This vision was clearly laid on our hearts as we through and around

Spokane dreaming about what God’s desires would be for this city. Our desire is to see a new generation emerge within

Spokane, with the gospel of Jesus on the forefront of their minds and hearts.

When we hope to see this transpire...The next big question after you know the where, is the when. At this point, with consideration taken from Pastor, other

mentors, and counselors. Annie and I would like to begin the initial pre-launch monthly service phase of the church plant

in September of 2011. As we grow and learn to speak the language of the community, we are confident that we will

know when the time is right to begin weekly services. Our goal would be to have weekly services no later than March of

2012. Between now and September there is a lot to do as we prepare for what God is birthing. Thank you for your

partnership and support!

Submitted on March 8th, 2011, for Jesus’ Fame,

Pastor Ryan and Annie

The vision:the birth of True Hope Church...

Who we are going to target? What we are trying to accomplish? Where we are going to be? When will this all take place?, and how is this going to work?...

• Location, Demographic Research, and Target Audience

Spokane is a city located in the Northwestern United States in the state of Washington. It is the largest city and

county seat of Spokane County, as well as the metropolitan center of the Inland Northwest region. The city

is located on the Spokane River in Eastern Washington, 110 miles (180 km) south of the Canadian Border,

approximately 20 miles (32 km) from the Washington-Idaho border, and 271 miles (436 km) east of Seattle.

Spokane is surrounded by many incorporated and unincorporated communities, which make up the

suburbs of Spokane. They include Medical Lake, Cheney, Airway Heights, Mead, Colbert, Spokane

Valley, Millwood, Nine Mile Falls, Otis Orchards, and Liberty Lake. Across the border in Idaho are Coeur

d'Alene which anchors the Idaho portion of the urban area, Hayden, Post Falls and Rathdrum.1

Target Audience:

Our target audience is an unchurched man who has had some religious experiences; some good, but most

bad. Because of this he believes he has no need for “religion”. He doesn’t know Christ in a life-transforming way

and doesn’t know it could, or should be any different. He is 28, married, secretly hopes it doesn’t fail, has a kid,

yet is resisting becoming a father. His life is defined by what he wants, and he lives to this end, yet it leaves him

with a sometimes sharply noticed, but usually subtly nagging sense of emptiness.

One Church, Two Locations

Our vision is to begin True Hope as one church in two locations. We have a desire to be positioned in the North

part of the city, somewhere between or around both Gonzaga and Whitworth Universities. We also sense God

directing us to anchor our ministry in the South part of the city, near and/or on the South Hill. Both the North

and the South parts of the city have a larger concentration of young families. While the North end also would

be a strategic location for university ministry.

• Mission, Vision, Values, and Model

The Mantra and The Mission:

“Helping people find their way back to God”

People will find their way back to God as they experience: Hope... Love... Then Faith.

1. Hope - Life can be better, hope can be found.

2. Love - Healing can be experienced, acceptance can be given.

3. Faith - Jesus is the source of it all. A heart transplant can happen.

As people find their way back to God... we will invite them to join us in helping others find their way

back as well. We will do this by defining partnership with True Hope’s Mission as:

1. Celebrating - growing in a new life of worship and devotion to Jesus. (Faith)

2. Connecting - sharing authentic love with others and growing in community. (Love)

3. Contributing - giving hope and help to others in Jesus name. (Hope)

The Tagline:

“Finding hope in coming home” (Luke 15: the story of the lost son)

Or...

“It’s all about Jesus. Period.”

The Elevator Pitch: A picture of what we are about in 90 seconds

More than church as usual. We’re after the birth of a movement.

We will not be defined by our spaces, places, and programs. We will not settle for status quo, content

to pay ours bills and cater to our members. We will look to take the gospel to unexpected places and

faces, refusing to play it safe.

More than church growth. We’re after a “whatever it takes” mission.

We will constantly ask the tough questions that keep the mission on the forefront of our minds.

Anything short of sin is game if it reaches people who otherwise wouldn’t be reached.

We want more than just church programs. We’re after people becoming the church.

We will not start every church program under the sun to suit the needs of a diverse and hurting

community. Instead we will empower the previously hurting and recently reached to become those

reaching and healing, dreaming and doing ministry. The people of God becoming the church we

should be.

More than a behavior fix. We’re after a heart transplant.

We are going to focus on the centrality of Jesus, and the power of the Holy Spirit working through the

proclaimed gospel to transform people’s hearts. Behaviors will change, after hearts are transformed.

The Model:

In order to birth a movement, our mission, becoming the church, and seeing hearts transformed by

Jesus... we need a clear implementation strategy. We will do three things with absolute focus and

priority: weekend services, community groups, and leadership development. If it doesn’t fit under

these, it’s probably a great idea, but not our calling. This intense commitment to do a few things will

enable us to do these few things at a world-class level, inspiring excellence, and building on our

strengths.

Our goal is to effectively launch True Hope Church in early spring of 2012, aiming to have at least 150

people in average weekly attendance during the month of March (6 months in). To achieve this, we will

adopt some of the principles of a well-known church planting model that has worked in a myriad of

environments: The Purpose-Driven Model, by Rick Warren.

Page 9: True Hope Church : Strategic Plan

Here are some core principles of the model that we’ll implement:

We will be built on the five biblical principles for the church (worship, fellowship, discipleship, ministry

and evangelism.)

We will use buildings as tools for accomplishing ministry, not as signs that we have achieved a level of

success.

We will have loud energetic music, and a “come as you are” atmosphere, with strong Bible teaching,

accompanied by a fun, modern, and active environment for kids.

We will focus on church health, not church growth, because the result of health is both numerical and

spiritual.

We will be a volunteer-driven church and mobilize members for ministry.

We will focus on crowd-to-core growth, meaning that we will work hard to draw a crowd and then

provide a path to spiritual maturity.

The Values: What passions will guide and drive us to fulfill this mission?

Jesus and His Mission: We love Jesus. He is the flag we wave higher than any other. Our driving

passion is to make Jesus famous. He is our everything. He has loved, saved, and commissioned

us. Through Him we have found forgiveness, freedom, and fulfillment. We are compelled to the core

by His word’s that there are “sheep of His that are not yet in His fold” and we take serious our call to

go and compel them to “find hope in coming home”.

Authenticity: We hate religion. We realize that in our own strength we cannot please and serve God.

We embrace the reality that it is in our honesty and humility that the power of God is clearly seen. If it

wasn’t for the grace of Jesus, we would be far worse off than the worst of sinners. This perspective

causes us to share our struggles, hurts, doubts, and pains with others instead of trying to hide

them. This culture of “authenticity” is not only the best environment for our spiritual growth, but also a

very attractive and realistic environment for those seeking to find their way back to God to explore

Jesus’ claims and the transforming power of Christian community.

Biblical Truth: We love the Bible. We believe it is our road map, the greatest testament of the truth of

Jesus and His Mission. We will study, talk about, apply, pray, share, treasure, and trust it in

the face of apparently competing circumstances. We will build our lives and our church on what it

says.

Page 10: True Hope Church : Strategic Plan

Reproducing: We are all about multiplication. We believe in exponential growth. We believe in

reproducing disciples, leaders, churches, networks, and movements. What we have is meant to be

invested in others. We grant permission, release, and empower the work of Jesus through His body.

We are not consolidators, we are multipliers.

Generosity: We want to be like Jesus. Jesus is the ultimate giver. We are generous with our treasure,

time, and talents. Our generosity is the basis of our reproduction. As we give, we enable the power of

reproduction and multiplication in our lives and the kingdom of God.

Excellence: We value quality. We bring our best in partnership with Jesus and His mission. We have a

passion to honor God with the very best of our skills, creative energy, and resources.

Unity in Diversity: We will settle for nothing less than unity. One mind and heart, behind the vision and

direction of our leadership. To realistically achieve this we will practice unified diversity. The “ditches”

on specific issues (theology and practice) will be identified by the leadership, as well as the acceptable

“lanes on the road”. We will not let secondary issues, divide our momentum toward the primacy of

Jesus and His Mission.

God-Sized Dreams: We believe in a BIG God, with limitless power and resources. We believe He births

dreams in our hearts that cannot be accomplished on our own. We will never stop dreaming. We will

never stop trusting that God is a God of the impossible. Every new storm is a new opportunity to walk

on water.

• New Church Governance/Affiliation Plan

Parent Affiliated Churches (from now on referred to as PAC) are a General Council supported strategic option

for established Assemblies of God churches to launch new works of ministry, specifically churches, in order to

reach new demographics with the gospel. In this case, the nature of the relationship between the Parent Church

(Stone Church) and the affiliated church (True Hope) would be threefold: financial (initially, until True Hope is

self-sustaining), governmental, and relational.

Financial:

As a PAC, Pastor Ryan will remain technically employed by Stone Church. During the first year of the new

church plant, the Official Board of Stone Church will determine what salary and benefits Pastor Ryan will

receive during the launching of True Hope Church. Along with the determination of pay, Pastor and the

Board will lead and encourage the Stone Church body to partner with the vision of Stone Church through

TrueHope. They will do this with both one-time gifts and/or monthly pledge amounts, this support total

being a key part in building True Hope’s first annual budget. (Note: Stone Church will not be the only financial

support arm to True Hope, but a key one)

The sooner True Hope Church can become economically self-sustaining, the better. If this can be accomplished

in one year, then praise the Lord! If not, a second year of financial support would be discussed prior to that

years budget process, with the expectation that it would be less than the first year’s support. Such matters will

be decided with the Board of Stone Church and Pastor, in light of how TrueHope Church is

progressing.

Page 14: True Hope Church : Strategic Plan

Each year, TrueHope Church’s budget will be presented and approved by the Stone Church board.

Governmental:

At the point when True Hope is economically self-sustaining and it is both wise and necessary for Pastor Ryan

to be paid from True Hope Church income, the Official Board of Stone Church will set this salary. In this

way, they are acting as a governmental covering and an objective voice in the financial matters of True Hope.

Any necessary pastoral/leadership discipline will fall under the guidelines of Stone Church bylaws and be

handled by the Stone Church board.

True Hope Church does not foresee the purchase of property prior to being a sovereign, self incorporated entity.

Relational:

TrueHope Church is a daughter church in every sense of the word. It is our hope and goal to share the victories

and lean on the wisdom of our parent church. The ministries of True Hope Church will be separate from the

ministries of Stone Church. The mission, vision, and values will be different, geared to contextualize the gospel

toward the new culture it is in. True Hope is not a satellite, in the sense that it is “Stone Church East” with the

same messages, content, and programs. It will be a separate, yet affiliated work.

This relationship (PAC) will be suitable for the time being, with annual review, and the option for True Hope

Church to become a sovereign and self-sustaining work when such action be desired.
