TwO service Technicians from westar Footscray have been recognised for their achievements in the 2009 isuzu australia Technicians Guild.

The Isuzu Technicians Guild has been running since 1988 with the aim of supplying dealer service technicians with the most up to date Isuzu product and technical information. It is also an additional form of training as it is based around the Isuzu truck product, service issues and related topics.

The program provides a relaxed source of education and self improvement for technicians.

Technicians that enrol receive 6 Techguild articles, three of which contain questionnaires that are completed and returned for marking as part of the final assessment. Participants also receive 4 issues of Isuzu Service Techline bulletins during the year.

The questionnaire results combined with an end of year exam result enable participants to qualify for a range of awards.

Bram Hanson achieved the highest score in the Victorian Zone and was duly recognised with ‘Master’ status and presented with a cheque for $2,000 and a personalised inscribed plaque.

Victor Rissman was placed third in the zone and recognised with ‘Senior’ status and picked up a cheque for $1,000 and a certificate of recognition.

Due to their tremendous results, both Bram and Victor are eligible to compete in the Isuzu Australia National Technical Competition this year, with the top two placed technicians in this competition going on to compete against the best technicians from Asia and Oceania in the Isuzu I-1 Grand Prix technical competition

Good luck Bram & Victor!

‘Can do’ attitude key to Budget’s long-term relationship with Patterson Cheney

FOr Over 24 years, Budget franchisee paul wheelton (OaM) has enjoyed a productive and mutually rewarding relationship with patterson cheney.

From Paul’s perspective, the key to the longevity of the relationship is the way he gets treated. “They go out of their way to look after you. If there’s ever a problem, all

I have to do is pick up the phone and it’s fixed,” Paul said.

Paul also praises the involvement of Isuzu head office personnel. “It’s the relationship with both Isuzu and Patterson Cheney that is the key thing. “They treat you with respect and you really feel you have a true partnership – something that I haven’t found with other organisations,” Paul added.

Paul owns 7 Budget franchises in Melbourne’s Northern and Eastern suburbs, along with 4 franchises on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast. Paul has had a long association with Budget in Australia having previously held the position of Chief Accountant of Corporate Budget.

Given his experiences, it’s no

surprise to hear that Paul has slowly moved to an all Isuzu fleet which now comprises a mixture of N and F models in tray, van and tipper bodies. His total truck fleet now numbers in the hundreds.

Paul now specifies all new trucks with Isuzu’s Automated Manual Transmission (AMT), given that many of the renters are relatively inexperienced with driving a truck. This provides his customers with a more relaxed, easier driving experience whilst ensuring less wear and tear on the trucks.

Whilst Paul praises the quality of personal service he receives, he is also very impressed with the Isuzu product. “Customers love driving the Isuzus and that’s good for business,” Paul said.

Paul naturally bases his purchase decision on the ‘whole of life’ operating costs where factors such as Isuzu’s legendary reliability and resale value come into play. “Quite simply, Isuzu has a better resale than the others,” Paul added.

Whilst Paul keeps a close eye the performance of each of his branches, a large proportion of his time is taken up with a number of charitable causes. Amongst other roles, Paul is Chairman of Life Education which is responsible for drug and health education amongst primary school children. Each year the organisation takes their vital message to around 750,000 children and Paul is appreciative of the support he receives from Patterson Cheney.

Western Star LNG prototype in trialsThe inTrODucTiOn OF systems that allow operators of diesel vehicles to reduce operating costs by using low cost, clean burning natural gas along with diesel fuel in a diesel engine is gathering pace.

In addition to reducing operating costs due to the substitution of diesel with much lower cost gas, these systems also claim to offer other benefits including a reduction in CO2 and regulated emissions plus improved engine response and efficiency.

Lower CO2 and regulated emissions are a result of a higher level of engine efficiency and the clean burn of gas with lower carbon content than diesel.

A number of systems are now coming onto the market and Western Star are currently running a prototype truck fitted with the Peak3™ Energy Efficiency Management System to independently monitor the claimed efficiencies.

At the heart of the EEMS™ is a sophisticated Electronic Control Unit which interfaces with the engine’s own ECU/EMS and other vehicle systems to monitor and obtain performance information. Using this information, the ECU dynamically and intelligently manages gas injection, adjusts the dual fuel ratio and fine tunes the mixture for optimal engine operation.

The ECU monitors critical parameters to make sure that the engine is always protected even against highly improbable events. The ECU will automatically put the engine into full diesel mode if fault or out of-limit conditions arise.

The Peak3™ system is a retro-fit kit that is mounted externally to the engine which remains unchanged. It was a diesel before the EEMS™

fit and remains a diesel after the install. The EEMS™ is compatible with most 4-cycle, turbo-charged diesel engines with electronically controlled fuel injection.

The amount of diesel substituted varies according to the duty cycle e.g. an urban duty cycle will have less substitution than a long haul duty cycle.

The engine, drive and thermal systems operate within original designed limits and features a fail safe operation whereby the engine defaults to 100% diesel operation on fault or out-of-limit conditions.

Importantly the manufacturer’s engine warranty is not affected.

The exact reduction in operating costs has yet to be clarified, but it is anticipated that significant savings will result, especially for long distance operators.

Costs for the Peak3™ EEMS™ system has yet to be determined.

Western Star are also well advanced with several other systems including the Westport direct injection system – we’ll keep you fully updated in the next issue of Truck Force.

For more information about these lnG systems, please contact your patterson cheney/westar representative.

‘GreaT Trucks and good blokes to deal with,’ is how ross woodhouse describes his relationship with his western star trucks and Brendon smith and Tony elkins from westar.

Ross is the founder and owner of R&J Woodhouse and Sons, a Tasmanian trucking company based out of Ulverstone that has been operating for close to 40 years. The company specialises in the loading and carting of timber for Gunns and each year hauls around 360,000 tonnes of wood.

The company is very much a family affair with Ross’s wife, both sons and his daughter involved with the business. One of his sons is the Manager looking after the business side of things, whilst the other looks after the trucking side. Whilst Ross is now semi-retired, he still keeps a close eye on things, using his years of experience to help out in various areas.

The business has grown steadily and now operates a fleet of 13 trucks and a broad combination of trailers including tri-tri’s and B-Doubles. Whilst the majority of the trucks are used for the logging side of the business, a few are also used for general intrastate haulage.

Ross bought his first Western Star a few years back and was so impressed has continued to buy them since. The trucks are all ‘day cab’ models powered by Cummins diesels which Ross has had a long and successful relationship with.

“The Western Star is very driver friendly, very comfortable with a well laid out dash - they’re a good piece of gear,” Ross said.

Whilst Ross is very positive about his Western Stars, the

quality of service he receives from Westar is another crucial factor in the relationship.

“Brendon Smith is just a hell of a nice bloke who really knows what he’s talking about – you’d have to go a long way to meet anyone better than Brendon,” said Ross. “I can ring him anytime – nothing’s too much trouble.

That means a lot to me when I’m looking at buying trucks and upgrading,” Ross added.

Ross kits out his trucks with a bit of extra ‘bling’ – whilst Ross likes his trucks to look the goods, he also knows his drivers appreciate it. After all his years in business Ross knows that business success is very much a

two way street and looking after his drivers is a key priority for him.

Ross has just placed an order for another Western Star with a long term view of moving to an all Western Star fleet in the future. In his own words, “I can guarantee I won’t be buying any other make of truck until hell freezes over,” Ross adds with a chuckle.

i can guarantee i won’t be buying any other make of truck until hell freezes over.”

CUSTOMER EXPERIENCESISUZU D-MAX

The Diesel GrOup OF cOMpanies is involved with the sale, installation and servicing of air conditioning systems for the residential, commercial and industrial markets. since its formation in 2004, the company has experienced considerable growth and now employs 35 staff.

Diesel Mechanical Services is the division responsible for the service and maintenance of these air conditioning systems. Service manager, Brad Fogg recently joined the company with the task of managing and building up this part of the business to handle the increased workload. Brad has years of experience in the air conditioning industry and

is an air conditioning mechanic by trade.

One of his first tasks was to select a new Ute. Brad had already completed a fair amount of research into Crew Cab utes prior to joining Diesel, so he knew what he was looking for. “I’d looked and test driven a number of Utes but the D-Max was the stand out vehicle in terms of looks, performance and standard features,” Brad said.

“The D-Max is a good looking Ute, plus for the same money you can get the top of the range model rather than a lower spec competitor’s vehicle,” Brad added. Brad dealt with Adam Folino at Patterson Cheney whom he

describes as very helpful and knowledgeable. After discussing the various options and making sure all the boxes were ticked, Brad selected a white 4x2 Crew Cab model which was delivered in November’ 09. A canopy was fitted for the protection and security of the many work tools carried.

Brad finds the diesel engine very economical, and is achieving 200 kms a tank more than with previous vehicles. He also finds the 3-litre turbo diesel very responsive with plenty of grunt - invaluable for the occasions when they need to tow heavy loads such as a scissor lift.

Importantly the technician that drives the D-Max also likes the

vehicle, especially its comfort and drivability. “In fact the technician that drives the D-Max hasn’t stopped talking about it since he got it!” Brad added.

The positive experience that Brad has had with D-Max and Paterson Cheney led him to place a second D-Max order with the vehicle being delivered in January this year. This model is also a white 4x2 Crew Cab, in keeping with Brad’s aim to build up a fleet of well presented, similar looking vehicles complete with Diesel’s signage.

Given Diesel’s continued growth, Brad expects to be adding a third D-Max to the fleet in the not too distant future.

Isuzu D-Max playing an important role with Diesel Mechanical Services’ increased workload.
