HEADQUARTERS ETOUSAOFFICE OF THE CHIEF OF TRANSPORTATIONMOTOR TRANSPORT DIVISION Kxroh 1944The purpose of this pamphlbt is to assist motor officers and dispatchers
in making accurate and efficient truck allocations when called upon to movelargo quantities of army supplies in fiold operations. Tho list of supplyitems includes those most likely to be shipped by truck in largo quantitiesfrom depots to ports, from ports to base depots and from the latter to branchdepots. The item nomenclature, unit pack and cubic volume aro shown in tho firstfour columns and tho remaining columns show tho number of unit packs that canbo loaded on various cargo vehicles. Tho four vehicles considorod are tho 1-ttrailer, tho 2|pton 6x6 truck, a 5-ton cargo truck or trailor and tho 10-tonsoini-trailor* In caculating allowablo loads, both weight aid. volume woreconsidered* And astorisk (*) before an it on indicates that tho lead limit for
tho vehicles considorod is dotorminod by volumo rathor than by woight,TOionastorisk appears after a load figure, it indicatos that tho load for only thatparticular vehicle is limited by volumo* Tho symbol jtf before an itom indicatthat tho overall longth is such as to roquiro a vohiclo with a body longer thatho standard 2j~ton truck.The weight-load and tho cubic capacity of tho various vohiclos used as abasis for calculations aro as follows;
Woight Load Total Body Capacity Usoablo Body(pounds) (Cubic Foot) Capaoity (Cu,Ft1-ton trailor 2000 110 882-J-ton cargo truck 6000 400 3205-ton cargo truck or trailor 10000 400 or moro 320 or mo10-ton scmi-trailor 20000 938 750To allow for ir r egu la r it ie s of packages, i t was assumed that th e usoablo bodycapacity would bo only 80 porcont of the to ta l body cap aci ty.
In addition to tho abovo vehicles, a largo numbor of 2^-ton 6x6 cab-ovorongino tru cks w ith 15 and 17 foot t>doa w i l l ho ueod. Tho to ta l cubic capaciof tho 15-foot body is 500 cubic feet and of the 17-foot body 575 cubic foot.Whon ei th er modol is used for tran sp ort in g heavy items (thoso weighing noro th31 pounds per cubic foo t) , tho load por truck -Brill bo the same as thc.t shown ftho standard 2j- ton truck . In tho case of bulky items, however, (thoso narkedwith an as te ri sk ) tho load for the 15 foot cab-over-engine truck w il l be appromately the samo as tho combined load indica ted for tho 1-ton t r a i lo r and thostandard 2j*ton truck.

In using tho tables doc.ling with ordnance items ono #Lould boar in mindthat thoro aro often several different uodols of the same typo gun and difforonkinds of ammunition of tho samo caliber which vary slightly in weight or cube. Those slight variations havo boon omitted bcccu.se thoy wcro considorcd to bo tosmall to substantially effect loading plans, Othor discrepancios nay be notedin tho field due to ro-packing, the inclusion of British packs, changes in thostandard specifications since theso computations wore made or duo to changes i ntho sizoor stylo of amphibious packs.
Experimental work in developing standard palletized or skid loads is. now iprogress for selected itoms which nust bo landed on beaches in tho oarly stagesan operation. Those skid loads will weigh approximately 3000 pounds and tiro ofsuch units will normally constitute a load for the standard 2-g-ton truck,Ilothods and principles of proper loading of vehicles are adequately covorodin othor publications and consequently will only bo mentioned hero, Attontionis directed especially to Paragraphs 86-90 of tho Drivers Iknual (T!I 10-460) an
to tho provisions of AR 850-20 and TJ.i 9-1900 concerning tho handling of gasoliand explosives. The practivo of loading only ono commodity or typo of packagein a vohicle - commodity lop.ding - should bo followed whenever possible. Intho case of certain commodities such c.s butter and smoked moats, gasoline andrations, ots,, this is necessary to avoid contamination, Iftxod loads also creatconfusion and loss of time at tho receiving depot and necessitates sorting, reloading and transfers within tho .dopot,

EXPLANATORY NOTES ~ SECTION II(All figures In short tons - 2000 lbs.
To convert to long tons, mul tip ly by 9.3To convert long tons to short te;:s, multiply by 1.12;)
The purpose of the Tables presented in,this section of the "TruckLoading Reference. Data" is to assist personnel in making rapid and efficientestimated on the amount of motor transportation required for specific typesof movements' over various :forward distanceso Total dei.ly capacity movementfigures are given for zhe items which will be used in very largo quantitiesin field operations,
e$&**&.JLJ-A*JBJLJL i v "the tiiaes rec-.iirud in cargo and troop movements to make one round trip for various fonvard distances, and the total numbeof round trips which can be made in onu .day. Figures are given for type aompanwith cne or two drivers per vehicle, and also for semi-trailer companies with 12 trailers per truck tractor or prime mover* The number of romci trips computin thtsso tables are used as the bc.sis 'for Tables II through VII
The computations and capacities prjs-...nted in these Tables and theothers in this section are based on a v.-,re.gu conditions existing as to roads, traffic, weather, air attacks, labor supply for loading and unloading, otcproper allowances and adjustments should be made for material variations fromsuch a verage conditions.
The average vehicular speed for units operating with one driver pervehicle was taken as 1_5 TvfclH. (miles in hour) and 12 IC1R for units with 2 driversThe slower rate was used in the latter.case in that a large portion of theof'-the driving will be during the night*
The average daily time driving capacity (including loading and unloading time) of 1 driver per vehicle \/as taken to be 12 hours, \;ith the re -ma ining hours to be used for maintenance, feeding and res t. The combinedcapacity of 2 drivers per vehicle was taken as 20 hours. Th- remaining 4 hoursprovide time for nocessa ry 1st and 2nd echelon maintenance during the 24-t'Ourperiod, in order to make ccmi.lete, or at l^ast full, one-way trips, it will benecessary for drivers in some cases to be on duty for a longer period thanmentioned above. However, in trips of other lengths,- the timj required willbo less, so that the average tii.io on driving duty will be approximately as give
The "capacities given for units with 2 drivers per vehicle arc notbased on any set schedule for shifting diiv^rs. If possible., 1 driver shouldmal-o one or more complete round trips without taking a stop_ for sl-^jp.If tho round trip necessitates a lor. r shift than 1 driver can ;-.iske withoutbecoming unduly fatigued, a relief should be provided at the declination,in such manner, vehicle operation can l^ iz^pt at a ivie iimun. ?ur;--icur shifts aruondod, but longer shifts can bo us.:d if the situation wcrruit.j such .

.8 *"I-A,gives the round trip computations and capacities oftype companies for various forward distances in the movement of cargo( supplies and equipment), The average time required to load or unloada vehicle was taken as 1 hour, which allots for delays and time requiredto pick up convoy supplies (POL, rations, etc.)* Some vehicles will "bedelayed for a longer period at the turn-around in order to take on returnor evacuation loads. However, in that only a small percentage of the vehicles will be required to move such loads, the 1 hour average time for theturn-around is considered adequate.
TA3LS 1-3 gives the round-trip figures for the type companieswhich can be used in troop movements. The loading time was taken as 1hour, but the unloading time as only k hour for this kind of movement.'TA3L5 1-C lists the round-trip data for companir-s operating witii2 semi-trailers per prime mover. The loading or unloadind time for suchwas taken as hour, in that only a short length of time should be requiredto release one semi-trailer and to hook on a waiting trailer.TABL3 ,II-A,3,C give the daily traop movement capacities of the
type companies available for such duty for various forward distances. TheCapacities given can be used in troop movements between two fixed points,or in shuttle- movements where the length of such shuttle is approximatelyconstant. The column for the mileage closest to the actual distance of themove should be used.In these tables and the following movement capacity tables, twofigures (marked by an asterisk) are given as capacities for distances wherean additional half trip can be made in a day- The top figures should be used athe capacity for the first day of operation on the movement, and the bottom fothe second day. The reason for the larger capacity on the first day is thataii extra load can be carried forward on the half trip, but on the second day,
the trip is utilized in returning to the leading point to pick up theinitial load. The number of companies or approximate number of vehicles requiredto move a given number of troops 'a certain distance (or amount.of supply inTables III. through VII) can be determined 'oy interpolation between thefigures given. In that the capacities of one and two platoons (lU or 27vehicles available) are also give.n, a very close approximation of the requirement can rapidly be determined. If more companies or vehicles are needed than are given in the table concerned, a total of the largest capacitygiven and 1 or more company's capacity can quickly be added til a combination is worked out that will fill the requirement.TA3L3 IY-A, B, C & P. These tables list the tonnage movement capacities of type companies for various forward distances. If the;, requirement isstated in overall tonnage, the number of companies or vehicles needed can bequickly determined as explained before. However, if the movement orderis stated in total number of cases, cans, etc., the tonnage equivalentcan quickly be .determined'by dividing the total number by the number of cases, cans, etc., in a l--ton load as found in the first section of this manual.Such a procedure cannot be followed for supply items in the first sectionmarked wjLth an asterisk, as the loading of such items is governed by cubicinstead of tonnage capacity.

The ton -m ile ca p a ci ti es of dif fer en t type truck comp an ie s gi ve n in th is Table were determined "by m ultip lyin g the average number of task ve h ic le s avai la ble for duty (Uo) t imes the load l i f t capac ity
of the task v e h ic le , times 100 m il es . 100 m iles is the average distan ce1 d ri v er can made in one day , and may be a l l one way, or one or more roundt r i p s . In computing the ton-m ile requiremente of an ope ration , i t is necessary to determine the total.w ork invo lved , which inc lud es the round tr ip tothe loading point - the number of tons to be moved, times the round tripd i s t a n c e .The ton-mile capacities of the type companies were increasedfar such un its w ith 2 driv ers per ve h ic le . Only a 50$ increase was taken,in that more of the driving would be done during darkness, and that the increased use per vehicle would result in more time lost for repairs and 1,000and 6 ,000-mi le tech nica l overhauls .Ton-mile c ap ac it ie s can al so be computed on a forward ton -m ileb a s i s . In such comp utations, ^ of the ca p ac iti es given should be used , whichwould then gi ve the ca pa cit y of truck companies to move tonnage forward. Inus ing t h is method, only the forward ton-m ile requiremen ts should be used andcomputed by multiplying the tonnage to be moved times the forward distance.Figures are not given in this* se ct io n or the f i r s t sec tion on thelo ad in g or movement of barr ack s ba gs , as the si ze of such vary con side rab lyaccording to di ffe re nt packing in st ru ct io n s.
