The Chamber Choir and Willamette Singers have a wonderful recruiting tour this January to California performing 10 concerts in seven days in Medford, Roseburg, Red-ding, Davis, Modesto, San Mateo and San Francisco with a Welcome Home – After Tour Choir Concert in Hudson Hall on Saturday, Jan. 22 at 7 p.m.

With almost no time to catch a breath, the choirs are preparing for two major events. On Saturday, Feb. 19, the 16th Annual “Puttin’ on the Ritz” dinner dance will be pro-duced. The Ritz is moving to the Salem Conference Center for the first time. Featured performers will be the Willamette Singers and the Randy Kem Little Big Band, the Kemtones. The evening will include a three-course dinner, dancing to the Kemtones, and a wonderful performance by the Singers. Cocktails begin at 6 p.m. with seating for dinner at 6:45 p.m. Tickets may be purchased online at willamette.edu/go/ritz.

Just one week later, Male Ensemble Willamette, Voce Femminile, Chamber Choir and the Willamette Master Chorus will combine to produce Handel’s Messiah. See “Handel’s Messiah” article detailed description below.

Thank you for your continued support of the choral program. We so enjoy your presence at our concerts.

The Willamette Master Chorus will join with the Chamber Choir, Voce Femminile and Male Ensemble Willamette for a winter performance of G.F. Handel’s Messiah on Feb. 26 at 7 p.m. and Feb. 27 at 3 p.m. The performance will be accompanied by orchestra and harpsichord. The final concert of the season has the Master Chorus traveling to Mount Angel to perform concerts devoted to music with texts from the biblical book of Psalms. Choral music of Renaissance Italy and Germany will be presented with antiphonal brass and organ. Russian Orthodox settings of sacred psalm texts will also be heard along with compositions by Charles Stanford, Ralph Vaughan Williams and Charles Ives. Gospel influenced music will round out the programs which will be held in the Mount Angel Abbey Church on May 1 and May 8 at 3 p.m.

A Busy Spring for the Student Choirs

Greetings and a Happy New Year to all! The focus of this column is faculty performance. I am not exaggerating when I say that the Willamette music faculty is one of the strongest in the Pacific Northwest and it’s time to brag. In addition to preparing our student soloists and ensembles for their concerts, auditions and tours — my colleagues are travelling the West Coast and the world to perform this year. Here are some highlights:

John Doan, guitarist, recently toured the West Coast and Europe. His new recordings are “A Celtic Pilgrimage” (Akoustic Music in Europe) and “Harp Guitars Under the Stars,” with Muriel Anderson, the first duet recording of harp guitar music (GCD/Tapestry Records).

Wallace Long, director of choral activities, will be conducting a choral festival in Ireland this March.

James Miley, jazz pianist and composer, spent early November performing and presenting workshops at the 2010 Jazzmandu Festival in Kathmandu, Nepal!

Natalie Pascale, clarinetist, performed the Copland Clarinet Concerto with the Portland-Columbia Symphony and Mozart’s Clarinet Concerto with the Olympia Symphony in the fall.

Daniel Rouslin, violinist, performed the Bach E-major Solo Violin Partita and the Bach Sonata for Violin and Keyboard BWV 1016 with pianist Fred Kronacher at the Musical Experiences 2010–2011 lecture-concerts series in Seattle in October.

Allison Swensen-Mitchell, mezzo-soprano, will sing Verdi’s Requiem this spring with Festival Chorale Oregon. Look for Allison as Marcellina in Portland Opera’s production of Le Nozze di Figaro next fall.

Sarah Tiedemann, flutist, performed a rarely-heard concerto, Rutter’s Suite Antique with the Salem Chamber Orchestra in November. Close to home is still exciting!

Hekun Wu, cellist and Elise Yun, pianist, play Sei la terra che aspetta for cello and piano on the recently released CD, “Music of Arlene Zallman” (Bridge Records).

Fortunately, many of our faculty artists are performing on campus this semester so check the listing of concerts in this issue and mark your calendars!

Internationally renowned flutist Jill Felber will present WHOLE FLUTES® and the WHOLE PERFORMER, a full-day seminar including a master class, technique classes, and workshops on guided meditation, breathing and yoga for performers. The event will culminate in an evening recital, where Felber will be joined by pianist Dianne Frazer, performing works of Doppler, Reinecke, Godard, Zyman and Rutter.

Currently professor of flute at UC Santa Barbara, Felber is principal flute with Opera Santa Barbara. With degrees from University of Michigan and Bowling Green

State University, she has taught at Ohio University, Capital University and Wright State University, and has released world premiere recordings for Centaur Records, CRI, Neuma Records and ZAWA!MUSIC.

This event is co-sponsored by the Grace Goudy Distinguished Artists Series and the Greater Portland Flute Society. Felber’s work is relevant to all musicians, so non-flutists are encouraged to attend.

Recital tickets can be charged by calling 503-581-4325 and are available online at absolutelytix.com. A service charge will be added. All other tickets sold at the door.

Spring semester features an extraordinary series of concerts by internationally renowned jazz artists right here at Willamette University, officially dubbed “Willamette Underground: Jazz and Improvisational Music 2010–2011” (on the web at willamette.edu/go/underground). February kicks off the series with the 30th annual Willamette Jazz Festival (begun in 1982 by Professor Martin Behnke) featuring acclaimed trumpeter and composer, Ron Miles. Opening the festival on Friday evening, Feb. 4, will be NYC-based saxophonist Hashem Assadullahi’s sextet with Miles as guest soloist in Rogers Rehearsal Hall. Tickets are $5 at the door. Saturday showcases our visiting school ensembles during the day with an evening concert by Ron Miles and the Willamette Jazz Collective at 7:30 p.m. in Smith Auditorium. Tickets go on sale Jan. 18, 2011. Purchase by calling 503-370-6255; adults $15, students/seniors $5. In what we hope is the beginning of a long and fruitful association with the best and brightest of the NYC jazz scene, we’ll feature two more performances by award-winning New York based jazz musicians: Ralph Alessi and This Against That on Sunday, Feb. 20, and the Grammy-nominated John Hollenbeck Large Ensemble in concert on Friday, March 4. Closing out the series is Willamette’s own Mike Nord and the Noru Ka Soru Ka Improvised Music and Dance Ensemble featuring musicians from Switzerland and Japan on Saturday, April 16. Call 503-370-6255 to purchase tickets.

Here’s to a fantastic semester of beautiful jazz and improvised music! Hope to see you all at the concerts!

Jazz Program at Willamette

Collaboration is key this semester with Willamette’s Wind Ensemble — featuring performances by the Willamette Dance Company, guest conductors, student soloists and guest chamber ensembles. Concerts are on March 13 and May 2 — both begin at 7:30 p.m. and are free of charge. Grant Linsell, director of the Wind Ensemble, will be hosting a live webcast of all upcoming concerts. If you cannot travel to Salem for a concert, you can watch and listen live over the internet.

Visit www.grantlinsell.com/live.

On Sunday, Jan. 30, mezzo-soprano Allison Swensen-Mitchell and pianist Anita King will give a recital featuring Schumann’s Liederkreis, Op. 39, twelve settings of poems by Eichendorff. The epitome of romanticism, the songs of this cycle are like fragments of a whole, filled with evocations and reflections of an ancient past, elements of folk lore, the constant poetry of an emotionally-charged natural world, and a pervading feeling of alienation from normal life.

Also included on the program are songs by Brahms, Sibelius and Grieg. The recital will take place at 3 p.m. in Hudson Hall.

The Willamette University Department of Music will present the 16th annual Puttin’ on the Ritz dinner and dance at the Salem Conference Center, Saturday, Feb. 19, 2011, 7–10 p.m. (cocktail hour begins at 6 p.m.) Tickets are now on sale. Visit willamette.edu/go/ritz.

The University Chamber Orchestra will collaborate for the second year with the Dramatic Vocal Arts Ensemble, presenting Engelbert Humperdinck’s beloved opera, Hansel and Gretel on March 11 and 12, 2011.

The orchestra will perform its spring concert on April 14 with Benjamin Britten’s Simple Symphony and Schubert’s Italian inspired Symphony no. 3 in D major. The concert will also feature the 2010 Willamette Concerto-Aria Competition winners: Heather Shohet, violin, performing Ravel’s Tzigane-Rapsodie de Concert, and Sydney Gabbard, soprano, performing Donizetti’s aria, Quel guardo il cavaliere from the opera, Don Pasquale.

On Friday, April 29, 2011, at 7:30 p.m. in Hudson Concert Hall, New Music at Willamette will present a gala concert in celebration of the 20th year of the series. The program will also honor the 100th anniversary of the death of Gustav Mahler, one of the seminal figures of the modernist movement in music, with a performance of Mahler’s spectacular orchestral song cycle, Das Lied von der Erde. Fittingly, the Mahler will be heard in a special arrangement for chamber orchestra by Arnold Schoenberg, a composer whose own orchestral style was greatly influenced by

Mahler. The vocal soloists for Das Lied will be our own faculty members Professor Allison Swensen-Mitchell, mezzo-soprano and director of the Dramatic Vocal Arts Ensemble along with Professor Leslie Green, tenor. Also featured on the program will be The Pythia, a monodrama for soprano and orchestra on a poem by Paul Valéry. This work by composer-in-residence John Peel will be heard in a new version for chamber orchestra and will be sung in English. The soprano soloist will be another member of our outstanding voice faculty, Professor Amy Hansen. Accompanying the singers will be a splendid ensemble of instrumental soloists including faculty members along with principals from the Oregon Symphony and other orchestras in the region. Professor Hekun Wu will conduct.

New Music at Willamette to Celebrate 20th Anniversary Season

Dear Vocal Jazz Lover Vocal jazz is still alive and well at Willamette. At a time when some schools are struggling

to put together a vocal jazz ensemble, we were blessed this year to have a group of

hard-working and extremely caring musicians carry on the Willamette Singers’ musical

tradition.

I was fortunate to have the opportunity to take a sabbatical in the spring of this year and to

have such a capable colleague as Paul Klemme take over the conducting responsibilities

for the second semester. Paul continued to push the group to explore ever-broadening

styles of vocal jazz, all performed at a high degree of quality. Of course each year, the CD

means we say goodbye to another group of talented seniors and this group is certainly

no exception. In our rhythm section we say goodbye to our bass player, Christer Sonheim

and our pianist, Daniel Heathcock. Both of these gentlemen have played for three years

each in Singers and have been the backbone of our rhythm section. I appreciate their

incredible work ethic and the commitment they have brought to Singers over the years.

Daniel Heathcock’s fine piano work can be heard throughout the CD and in his solos on

“Down for the Count,” “Save Your Love for Me” and “This Little Light of Mine.”

Vocally, we are graduating Shauna Carattini, Kim Cowan, Kristin Roney, Ben Roberts and

Nicholas Woolsey. We owe much of our success to these fine leaders and musicians. Shauna

moved from second alto last year to lead soprano this year and her amazing voice is

featured on “God Bless the Child.” Nick’s fine baritone voice is featured on “Don’t Get

Around Much Anymore” and also does some fine guitar work on “Don’t You Worry ’Bout

a Thing” and “All God’s Children Got Rhythm.” Singers was blessed with a group of

talented newcomers this year as well. Ruth Heald’s rich alto voice is featured “Save Your

Love for Me,” Matt Fidler takes the lead role in “Come Rain or Come Shine,” Greyson

Eames’ strong tenor voice is heard on “Green Dolphin Street” and Katie Martin does a

great job on “This Little Light of Mine.”

Thank you to all of the many jazz lovers who continue to support our music. Special thanks

to the students who worked so diligently to make this recording and to their parents who

have supported their musical endeavors.

On March 11 and 12, 2011, Willamette’s Dramatic Vocal Arts will present Humperdinck’s Hansel and Gretel. The opera, first per-formed in 1893, is based on the well-known Grimm fairy tale, in which two children, sent into the woods as punishment by their

mother, stumble upon a gingerbread house and are lured into a witch’s trap. The university’s production, directed by Professor Allison Swensen-Mitchell, will maintain the balance of darkness and subtle charm that has drawn audiences to Hansel and Gretel for ages. Hekun Wu, director of the University Chamber Orchestra, will conduct the student cast, which will be joined by the UCO, as well as the guest Willamette Girlchoir. The show will be held at 7 p.m. in Smith Auditorium. The cost is $7 for adults and $3 for students with ID. Tickets may be purchased through the music office or at 503-370-6255.
