Trotting through the Alps like the Wolf

the larch; from the wheat fields to the gentian lawns; from a man-made landscape to a sweeping scenery of wilderness. The last two days are a grandiose conclusion to the trip - with a good general idea of high mountain conditions and Europe’s largest glacial lake. Marmots, chamois and golden eagles will be there to meet you! A wolf may observe you from afar, too fearful to draw near.

A triumph for nature

In 1993, the Alpi Marittime Park and the Mercantour National Park were awarded the European Environment Diploma. This diploma is awarded to internationally recognised natural areas in which nature conservation is particularly important due to their scientific, cultural or recreational value and their natural beauty.

A flora unique in Europe

This is the only French national park containing all levels of vegetation : from Mediterranean vegetation (holm oak, olive tree, hop-hornbeam) to rhododendron moors and up to alpine meadows at more than 2500 meters, whilst passing through fir, spruce, mountain pine, arolla pine and in particular larch forests. Of the 4200 plant species which exist in France, more than 2000 of them are present in the Mercantour National Park, including around 40 endemic species (found nowhere else). The springtime is a veritable symphony of colour.

Itinerance-trekking is a membership organisation

This trek invites you to travel around the most beautiful villages and hamlets of the Alpine mountain valleys which dominate the magnificent wine-stained gorges of the Daluis and the Cians.

HikingThe mountains boast fantastic summits for hiking addicts !In this fantastic hiking location, the hills are fairly steep, yet there are numerous hiking trails which head out in all directions, and several loop possibilites of various distances. The IGN map 3540 ET shows the trails, and the numbered markers assist with the navigation. The maze of mountain hiking trails extends far enough, in most directions, that you can spend days or weeks hiking in this area without once repeating the same trail.

The Forgotten villages and sunny peaks of the southern Alps.At the witness of the ancient stones:Enchanting villages like Péone with its "demoiselles coiffées" embedded in the rocks; Chateauneuf with its charming water mill, and Guillaumes with its wine museum.Barels, 2 hours from the path, invites you to meditate, as does the ghost town of Amen, perched above mountain pastures flowering with thyme and lavender, its red baths born in audacious torrents. Here is the breathtaking country we invite you to discover for the first time.

Summits between the sun and the azure sky.On clear mistral days you can genuinely see the Mediterranean. Mount st Honorat (2550m), la Tête de Méric (2048 m), le Mont Mounier (2817 m), le dôme du Barrot (2136m), summits which are reachable by everyone … it is definately worth the hike!

An exceptionally unique mountain in EuropeRed gold covers the ground you tread,Forests of larch trees and deserted, wild mountain tops,Wine-coloured gorges with valiant streams. These magnificent areas, which are part of the massif of the Mercantour and the borders of the national park, have been recognized as a heritage of the natural european sites of priority preservation.

At the source of our civilisation: The AlpsPastoral custom, transhumance … so many traditions from long ago, are still to be found in these mountains, due to the tenacity of our shepherds who remain honorable in their work.

It is here that we propose an excursion into our roots, through the discovery of the tiny forgotten villages of Mercantour.

Don't trek with your head in the clouds! The three don'ts of mountain trekking

You gain so much more from a trek when your eyes and ears are tuned into the music of the trail. We propose unseen, unprecedented circuits, created by our guides who are specialised in the conception of mountain trekking itineraries. They are rich with knowledge of the area they have doted on for 20 years and impatient to pass on the experience.

Don't be an ass, just because nature sounds like culture! It is easy on a trek to be so caught up with the nature surrounding us, that we miss the historic culture right before our eyes. You will set off on your trek with a detailed IGN map, leaflets edited by the Mercantour National Park, and a leafy booklet of information we have created, to pass on our vast experience of the nature, history and wonders of the region. Here's a glimpse of what is awaiting you…The flora is rich with Orchids, and endemics (species found nowhere else) The fauna: The region is home to specific mountain animals, from the wolf to the marmot, and encounters with ibex, chamois and the magnificent golden eagle. The geology is spectacular in this area: from the deep red pélites dating back to the end of the primary period to the sandstone of Annot from the tertiary period, and numerous intriguing fossil sites in between.

Don't return home without having met the mountain folkYou will be in an undiscovered land, which remains a little secret for the tourist industry, where you will spend an entire day walking without meeting a single person. The welcome you will receive each evening from the old and new people of the valley will therefore add to the pleasure of trekking, one of the discovery of strong characters and genuine encounters with the inhabitants of our mountains. Guides, hosts, farmers, all those who are part of our web, do not live here by chance, nor by resignation. For each one of us, this is a choice of living free in an unspoilt nature. Leisurely afoot, or with the donkeys we nurture, its part of the soul of our land that you will share, and a large breath of freedom that you will take back home with you.

Don't come expecting jacuzzi, breakfast in bed & automated toilet seats The places you will refuel and rest your head at night offer a taste for diversity, from being welcomed as homestay guests, to farms, rest houses, forester's shelters and small hotels. Don't come expecting the norms of a cold, sterilised hotel with all your basic needs. Often, it is simplistic comfort which fulfils the very image of astounding wilderness and creates the charm and adventure of your stay. If, for a week of alternative vacationing, you are able to adapt and to keep an open

spirit, you will share heart-warming moments with real, full-of-life people around a well-garnished table.

Trotting through the Alps like the Wolf Itinerary : Summarised version

Day One : Arrival at Villeplane Arrival at Nice airport or the train station. You then have the choice to take either the coach to Guillaumes or the mountain train to Entrevaux, from where you will be collected and driven to Villeplane. After relaxing in the beautiful mountain setting, you will have your first

experience of a french auberge, sharing dinner with other adventurers around a bustling table and settling down for the night, ready and raring for the following morning!

Day Two: Villeplane / Sauze Your hosts : Chez Bernadette, at the 'Auberge Communale' in Sauze

Tel : 0033 (0)4 93 05 57 70

OPTION 1 : By the Cante Valley Accumulated Ascent : 515 m Accumulated Descent : 375 mDistance : 8 km Continuous walking time :4 hrs Your trek begin in the 'redlands', on the southern and northern mountainsides of the Cante Valley. It will introduce you to the distinctive feature which creates the charm of the southern french Alps; The shear diversity of the landscapes, between the fresh, woody ubac (north-facing slope) typical of the northern french Alps, and the strong Provençal overtone of the adret (southern-facing slope).

Supplement : La Roche TrouéeExtra from Sauze VieuxAccumulated Ascent : 160 m Accumulated Descent : 70 mDistance : 1.5 km Continuous walking time : 1 hr

We advise this little extra circuit which will take you to an interesting geological curiosity in a savage setting. From Sauze vieux, you will descend to the forest border, where you will climb up to the the Roche Trouée (the pierced rock) and be perplexed by this natural sculpture.

Page 9: Trotting through the Alps like the Wolf · An exceptionally unique mountain in Europe Red gold covers the ground you tread, Forests of larch trees and deserted, wild mountain tops,

OPTION 2 : By the MoulinsAccumulated Ascent : 425 m Accumulated Descent : 290 mDistance : 9.5 km Continuous walking time : 4 hrs

An enjoyable panoramic trek on the flanks of the Mont st Honorat, to reach Sauze. The numerous hamlets you will come across towards the end of your day are witness to the fundamental rural life of long ago. It was at the Moulins that the people came to mill the crops harvested at Sauze, a real corn granary of the region.

Supplement : La Lare Totals from VilleplaneAccumulated Ascent : 595 m Accumulated Descent : 465 mDistance : 12.5 km Continuous walking time : 5 hr

This extra takes you up to the collet, and from here you will walk up through a woody path to the plateau of Lare where you'll be rewarded by the stunning panoramic view.

Ultimate Variant : By Font Freye Totals from VilleplaneAccumulated Ascent : 925 m Accumulated Descent : 615 mDistance : 16 km Continuous walking time : 6.5 hr

After a decent climb, here is a very enjoyable extra through a nature rich in species where 'biodiversity' takes on its full meaning. Before reaching the hamlet of Pra d'Aïraud, you will follow along the Enaux path which climbs up through harvested lands and passes the Perrier farm, arriving at the woods. Shortly after, you will come across Font Freye (fresh fountain), a spring of transparent etymology; you can judge for yourselves! From the mountain pass, you will snake up through a pleasant, bountiful forest and walk down to pass the valley of 'Maux sang' (bad blood): This is more than just a name, there was a time when cultivating in this nook was so uncertain, that the mountain folk were full of worry. Your itinerary will then guide you up slightly further to pass near to an ancient barn. The area is called Pra de Gueux (the day of the places with speaking names) and it offers us yet more memories. You will shortly pin up with the supplement itinerary La Lare (above) and follow it back to Sauze.

Day Three : Sauze / Les Tourres Your hosts : chez Guylaine Planque « les Vallières» hameau des Tourres

tél : 00 33 (0)4 93 05 52 94 / 0033 (0)6 09 49 75 67

A good day's walk starting gently on the northern-facing slope of Sauze, alternating between woods and clear passages offering beautiful panoramic glimpses, the occasion to appreciate the distinguishing features of the high valley of Var. A way of living in the rural life of long ago, consisted of spending winter in the villages and migrating to the nearby 'campagnes d'été' (summer country escapes) in summer. Here, there was farmable land, pastureland, barns and dwellings. Loubières is one of these places, and if you allow your senses and imagination, you will piece together the puzzle which invading nature is attempting to erase. Leaving the Auberge at Sauze, you will follow a path through pastoral passages in the forest, sunny glades and marlstone areas. Passing the site of the old summer getaway and the 'Pouaraque' (an immense basin for watering the fields and for farming), you will descend to the river Var. The perfect occasion to pop down to the river bank for a cool dip. After crossing the bridge, you will then walk up, following a sunlit marly crest, which overlooks magnificent panoramic views, leading to the village of Chateauneuf. It is worth a visit of the typical little lanes, the museum and the church which holds a real treasure for this small community. A nice little auberge is the perfect occasion for a coffee break.

Option 1 : Les Tourres, direct routeAccumulated Ascent : 820 m Accumulated Descent : 505 mDistance : 14 km Continuous walking time : 6 hrAfter the St. Antoine chapel, follow the 7 km path which leads you to Les Tourres. Cross the b299. At the entrance of Tourres (1650 meters - b207), follow the distinctive red and white painted signage of the GR52a up to the highest houses in the hamlet. The Guylaine’s house can be found 30 meters past sign-post 206.

Option 2 : Les Tourres via the GR52aAccumulated Ascent : 915 m Accumulated Descent : 600 mDistance : 15 km Continuous walking time : 7 hr At Chateauneuf, as you near the St Antoine chapel, it is also possible to take the GR52a. This path climbs and meanders amongst the distinctive gray marl and averages an extra hour compared to the more direct route.

Option 3 : The crest path via the mountain pastures and the Sen passAccumulated Ascent : 1250 m Accumulated Descent : 935 mDistance : 18 km Continuous walking time : 8 hr 30 min This is a challenging, beautiful hike which requires an excellent knowledge of mountainous terrain because the signage isn't very clear. In addition, being able to read a map is a required skill. This route is reserved only for very experienced hikers. n, being able to read a map is a required skill. Day Five : Tourres– Péone by Barrels Your accomodation : 'Hotel du Col de Crous' in Péone

TEL : 00 33 (0)4 93 02 58 37

Here is a true incursion into the past life of the valley; Barels is a truly beautiful place, which unites aestheticism and fossilised memories. Three abandoned hamlets forming an equilateral triangle, hidden in impressive mountain hollows, tell us the secret of a near forgotten life from long ago. What was the typical daily life of the people that lived here? And how many were they? Were they more isolated than the inhabitants of the other communities in the valley? A curious and attentive visit of the hamlets will answer these questions. Arriving in the Mercantour National Park, keep your eyes peeled for Chamois, ibex, deer, marmots and eagles. As you approach the first hamlet, the view will stun you. The itinerary then takes you to explore around the three hamlets 'Laves', Serre' with its church, its well and its numerous abandoned intriguing houses, and lastly 'Palud'. You will even have the chance to climb up to the charming mountain pass of Barels!

Direct to Barels :

Accumulated Ascent : 269 m Accumulated Descent : 408 mDistance : 6,5 km Continuous walking time : 2.30 hrsCross the hamlet and head downhill at b.207 in the direction of the hamlet of Gardivole (b.159). You will reach a stream, which you will be able to bathe in, in summer. Cross the stream and follow the path leading up through the pine forest to the pass of Barels, then over it and down to the hamlet of Palud. Keep on walking and you will soon reach the hamlet of Loves, where you will find Max’s house. You can also take a short detour and visit the hamlet of Serre, a little to the south.

Barrels / Péone :

OPTION 1 : By the mountain pass of 'Ségilière', Following the GR

Accumulated Ascent : 440 m Accumulated Descent :570mm Distance : 11,5 km Continuous walking time : 5hrsThis is the shortest option, preferable in the case of bad weather or fatigue. Saying goodbye to Max, you will head towards Bouchanières, b154, b 153 , Cross the river Barlatte, which can become torrential in times of stormy weather. If this is the case, follow Max’s advice, be cautious, and wait for the water level to drop.

Page 13: Trotting through the Alps like the Wolf · An exceptionally unique mountain in Europe Red gold covers the ground you tread, Forests of larch trees and deserted, wild mountain tops,

Trotting through the Alps like the Wolf

OPTION 2 : By the 'Baisse de la Valette' and the 'tête de Méric', 2048 m

Accumulated Ascent : 840 mAccumulated Descent : 890m

Distance : 16 km (+ 2 km for the summit) Continuous walking time : 7.5 hrsWe advise this option with good weather as this is a long walk. It is without doubt one of the most beautiful treks of the week, offering intriguing mountainous dimensions. The 'Tête de Méric' (Head of Méric) is a summit which culminates at 2048 metres and which despite its modest altitude, dominates the communities of Péone, Bouchanières and the High valleys of Var and Cians; a balcony offering a panorama of a rare amplitude.

Day Six: Péone – Valberg Your hosts : Chez Patricia & Patrick Guichard at 'Le Chant du Mèlé', in Valberg

TEL : 00 33 (0)4 93 02 57 88

This is a short day, allowing you the time to visit the beautiful medieval village of Péone. Apart from its distinctive architecture and its deep, narrow village lanes, it also has a baroque church, the inside of which is well worth a visit. In this way, when you leave the village to embark on another day's journey, you won't have the regret of passing through without even atttempting to uncover the secrets held within its confines.

Page 14: Trotting through the Alps like the Wolf · An exceptionally unique mountain in Europe Red gold covers the ground you tread, Forests of larch trees and deserted, wild mountain tops,

Trotting through the Alps like the Wolf

OPTION 1 : By the GR 52A

Accumulated Ascent : 590 m Accumulated Descent : 330 mDistance : 9.5 kmContinuous walking time : 4 hrs

From Péone, you will follow the GR in the direction of Valberg, crossing over a bridge to to reach a path which climbs upwards. Arriving slightly further up, you will have two choices:

1st Choice Continuing along the GR, to ascend above the village, heading towards the mountain pass of Espaul. Arriving at Huérris, you'll find your gîte, a pretty new wooden chalet.

2nd Choice Advised ItineraryJoining up with Valberg along a pretty footpath called 'chemin des Cytises'(Path of the Golden Chains). You will walk up towards the pass, winding between larch trees, until the path becomes a large traverse on the north-facing slope, surrounded by golden chains; little shrubs decorated all over with clusters of vivid yellow flowers. This is the wood that was used to make bell collars for sheep. The shape of the collar and the decoration were created by heating the wood and bending it on one's knee. These collars are easy to recognise as they have a darkened core.

OPTION 2 : By the Charvin Accumulated Ascent : 670 m Accumulated Descent : 440 mDistance : 10.5 kmContinuous walking time : 4.5 hrs

More fascinating itinerary. We would advise this one, so long as the crossing of the river Tuébi does not pose a problem. (check with your hosts at Péone if you are unsure). From your hotel, you will cross over the bridge and head towards the river. The path snakes up through a forest and eventually reaches the chapel St. Sauveur. You will shortly reach the point where you can decide between the 2 choices above.

Page 15: Trotting through the Alps like the Wolf · An exceptionally unique mountain in Europe Red gold covers the ground you tread, Forests of larch trees and deserted, wild mountain tops,

Trotting through the Alps like the Wolf

OPTION 3 : Objective Mount Mounier, 2048m For confirmed walkers

Accumulated Ascent (for the crests b.48): 1200 mAccumulated Descent : 900 mDistance : 16 kmContinuous walking time : 6 – 7.5 hrs

The itinerary takes you to sheep friendly pastures. You will firstly circle the mountain of Estrop which conceals a magnificent plateau of Edelweiss – bringers of happiness - though avoid picking them, to prevent their disappearance. The flora of the Mercantour area offers an extraordinary variety of endemic species. In the sanctuary consecrated to them, the fauna are fearless to the curious eyes of men, delighting amateurs of alpine nature. For the bravest of you, there is then the chance to climb the summit of mount Mounier which culminates at 2817m! When your host has a spare moment, he/she may be able to drive you up, in order to gain you some time.Leaving your hotel, you will ascend to the hamlet of Gombe, continuing up through high mountain pastures and passing a shepherd's cabin which provides shelter to the shepherds during the mountain summer period (June – October). The path twill then cross a rocky structure to finish on the highland of Estrop. You will climb up to the pass along a rocky valley, where you can admire the splendid view over the valley of Roya. From here, you can make the return journey up to the highest summit in the region:

By the Bridge of Roberts:Accumulated Ascent : 600 m Accumulated Descent : 960 mDistance : 16.km Continuous walking time : 6.5 hrs

The itinerary of this day will take you onto the other side of the Var, along a balcony which overhangs the gorges and offers a view of the village of Amen and the magnificent cascade d'Amen.

When you leave your gîte, you will head towards the mountain pass of Valberg, and continue through the hamlet of Collet. Descending down to follow the cool valley of Roberts, you will arrive at Notre Dame de Buyei: one of the most ancient witnesses of Christianity in the region. Here, there is a good place to picnic next to a water fountain. You will then pass through the hamlet of Roberts and cross the little bridge over a harmonious brook, to then cross the Var by the old bridge. Shortly after, begins a path which was once the valley's sole avenue of communication, and if your breakfast has kept you going this long, here is a pleasant opportunity for pic-nicking on the river bed, with a refreshing dip in the Var. The ascent will take you past the Brégeoum farm and along a stunning red carpet with exceptional glimpses between the trees! Arriving at the hamlet of Villeplane, and your beautiful mongolian yurts.

Supplement : By the Point SublimeExtra Ascent & descent : 330 mDistance : 4.5 kmContinuous walking time : 1.5 hr

The chance to walk around this balcony over the gorges of Daluis, with a little extra: a return trip to a truly beautiful view point. Before reaching the Colla, you will take the path which overhangs the gorges; For 15 centuries, this was the sole access to the valley, before the road was built in 1883. You will then head to the Point Sublime where there is an impressive bèlvédère. This site, around the nature of the rock (red pelites dating back to 250 million years old) and the numerous rare minerals, is unique in Europe.

Day Eight, extra option : Villeplane TEL : 00 33 (0)4 93 05 56 01

OPTION 1. The Mont Saint Honorat 2520m Accumulated Ascent : 1200 mAccumulated Descent : 1200 mDistance : 12 kmContinuous walking time : 6.5 hrs

A large trek at high altitudes, for good walkers and families looking to experience an alpine summit at the end of a good week's walk. You will be able to take a rest on the crests where an impressive panorama will reward your steep climb. The St Honorat is the characteristic peak of the valley, the first real southern summit. This climb remains a myth for the inhabitants of the valley whose children from the age of 7 climb it with them. Accomplishing the Mont St Honorat is thus seen as a means of reaching the age of reason!

OPTION 2 : Tour of the 'collet de la cime', little pass of the summits

For families with young children or fatigued groupsAccumulated Ascent : 300 mAccumulated Descent : 300 mDistance : 6 kmContinuous walking time : 2.5 hrs

This pretty half day trek takes place in a peaceful atmosphere, far from the rest of the world. The 360° panorama at the 'col de Devens' will allow you to see all the summits and to have an idea of the trek you have accomplished during your week. A very relaxed ascent of 300m, rounding off your week w i t h a soft landing, whilst having the possibility of outlining the entire trek in front of you. This is a good way of calculating the distance you have travelled as you can see each stage! You will also have the opportunity to Pic-nic under the shade of the larch trees near the 'col de Devens', and even to stop on the bank of the 'riou' (small brook), to re-motivate the dormant troups after yesterdays hard trek, with some aquatic revelry.

Working towards a responsible tourism

Our commitments

To maintain the importance of providing an economic contribution directly to the locals of the valley who live here all year round, favouring a network of 'chez l'habitant' hosts and always choosing local products over their industrialised, cheaper versions. This has lead us to create an alternative alimentation; Picnics made up of mixed salads, crops and vegetables from the garden, organic bread, cheeses from the region, etc. With our hosts and clients alike, we are developing an alternative idea of nutrition whereby quality, natural, reasonable price, and specific tastes (especially those of children) are united. ÆTo manage a tourism which we control, and not be tempted to delegate or to grow; To maintain the importance of quality and of improving our services. ÆA question of quality in response to your demands: This year, we are proposing for your last day, an alternative trek in contrast to the classic one (lac d'allos) in order to satisfy the desires of those of you who are passionate about secret and wild mountains. ÆTo instruct visitors to the region about pastoralism, the roots of our culture, through encounters with shepherds on our guided treks.

Looking after the environment:ÆMinimising the number of plastic disposables in our picnics; we provide you with corn starch disposables without GMO's.ÆLimiting the amount of paper used by providing all information on the internet.ÆUsing recycled paper for our booklets and information pages.ÆRespecting the frailty of the mountain milieu and being aware of the impact of our camping circuits at high altitudes; This has led us to limit our guided treks to only 10 per year so as to avoid harming a protected area or weakening the profession of the shepherd by the donkeys' grazing.ÆTo provide precise information so as to prevent visitors from being unaware of the traditions and respects of the mountains. Detailed information on our mountains and the lodgings can be found on our internet site www.itinerance.net

Your Commitments

ÆTo be a responsible tourist: to be conscientious and chose the right holiday for you and your family. Too often, guests do not read the information provided, and are then surprised that the weather is hot, cold, that the path climbs up, and down, is far, that there are flies, horseflies!ÆNot to be a mere consumerist :ÆThe mountains are not a touristic product which can be adapted according to the needs of its visitors. It is up to you to adapt in a mountain milieu which can not be domesticated. Our motto is 'small is beautiful', this also means adapting to the types of lodging and the way of living. ÆTo try to keep your ecological footprint on the mountains as light as possible. Pragmatically: make do with the means available, wherever you may be, without forgetting common sense. ÆNot to allow yourself to be alienated by a modern view of comfort which cannot be transported to the mountains. ÆT o refrain from throwing orange peel, plastic, cigarette stubs (5 years life-span!) etc…ÆTo follow the footsteps of the Indian… no one should see that you have passed here (i.e. don't decorate the mountains with pink toilet paper)ÆWhen possible, to use the information we provide on the Internet and print only what is necessary.ÆTo be open to and respectful of our cultures and traditions :§Never mind if we are full, you will be on the ball for getting in earlier next year! By limiting ourselves to a certain number of circuits per year, we are contributing towards preserving the nature. §'Be cool' with your generous hosts and avoid adding stress to their already busy summer with us! Our network of hosts is made up of locals of the mountains who have oodles of good will and are ready to welcome you with a smile. They will be delighted to honourably share their home, cooking and their passion with you. They are not professionals of the hotel industry, armoured, embittered and cynical: not the owners of a formule 1, then?! Here, human relations are privileged compared with consumerist relations! They deserve your respect, your frank curiosity and your interest. Do not come expecting a traditional hotel service complete with breakfast in bed, but a good aged whisky to wash down your blue cheese and delicious crème caramel, why not?!

Unaccompanied Trekking : This option offers a trekking circuit without the aid of a guide. The price includes a detailed itinerary and a map of the zone. Unaccompanied trekking therefore requires a comprehensive knowledge of map-reading and a good sense of orientation, particularly in the mountains.

Each individual must follow the advice given by the guide booklet. The organisers cannot be held responsible for any accidents occurring as the result of disregard for caution.

The organisers cannot be held responsible for a misinterpretation of the guide book or a map-reading error on the behalf of the participant. In the case of unaccompanied trekking, you must accept the possibility of a risk, even if minimal and unlikely, due to the natural ever-changing state of the environment. (a thunderstorm; heavy rain; rock erosion)

As a result, each participant is therefore responsible for their own safety, accepting this possibility of a risk, and not placing the responsibility of an accident or an incident on an organiser or another supplier. This responsibility also applies to other members of the family.
