Market Trends European Markets – July 2012 (Week 30)

Markets are very calm, following the uncertainty of the general economic trend. Even though it is too early to track a balance of the summer fruit season in Europe, the demand is at his lowest point during the year because of summer holidays and seems to be static despite the favourable weather. Avocado – The market is heavy: the supply from Peru and South Africa stand well above last year level and volumes from Kenya are also increasing. Prices decreased but remained above the average in the hass segment and are strongly under pressure for green varieties. Grapes – Big volumes of local product on the market, demand and prices for the grapes from Egypt, Morocco and Israel are not satisfactory. Kaki – Demand is very low and prices decreased considerably (particularly for the fruits from South Africa); air freighted fruits from New Zealand are on the market at extremely high prices (12,00-13,00 Euro/ctn). Kiwi – Big volumes and price adjustments for kiwifruits from Chile. Lychees - Israel started the exports by air- freight; expected volumes will be lower this year because of smaller planted surface. Mango – The season for mangoes from Israel started in advance in comparison to last year (the sea-freighted fruits from this origin are already on the market). The tommy atkins from

Brazil seems to be less requested also because of the demand for summer fruits and preference in favour of less fibrous varieties. Volumes from West Africa confirmed relatively small and with quality problems (black spots); the sea freighted fruits from Senegal are on the market. Physalis – Low demand and very low prices, particularly for sea freighted fruits. Pineapple – Available volumes are relatively small which resulted in slight price increases: fruits are offered at 9,00-9,50 Euro /ctn even though prices obtained might be smaller where the market is supplied (6,00-7,00 Euro) or higher for big counts (11,00 Euro /ctn). Prices for top brands rocketed to about 15,00 Euro/ctn because the product is practically unavailable; very high prices for mini pines. Prices for the European summer fruits have been attractive at the beginning of the month to subsequently decrease consistently (apart from few cases, e.g. cherries) but remained over last year average. Enterprises willing to provide price information and news about production and trade please contact: [email protected] Information is confidential; providers gain access to market reports, trade statistics and other ITC’s services.

Selected Horticulture Info June 2012

This section resumes articles published in sector reviews with the aim of describing the most important facts commented in the European market and give focus to information on products and markets, industry and trade, rules and regulations, sector events and technical assistance projects.

Quality and price top EU demands More than 90 per cent of people living in the EU believe quality and price are important factors when buying food, according to a new investigation carried out by the European Commission. The Eurobarometer survey on food security, food quality and the countryside, which polled more than 26,500 European citizens aged 15 and above across all 27 EU Member States, found that quality and price were deemed more important than origin (71 per cent) and brand (47 per cent) by the vast majority of those questioned. In fact, almost two-thirds said they felt food quality was "very important", while more than half regarded price in the same way. Quality labels are important for two-thirds of respondents, and there is an improvement on

previous years in the recognition of the different EU quality logos. The survey showed that 24 per cent of those asked already recognised the EU organic logo less than two years after its launch. On food security, meanwhile, three-quarters of EU citizens surveyed expressed concern at the challenge of feeding the world's population, although less than 60 per cent were concerned about the ability of individual EU member states to meet the food needs of their respective populations. It would also appear that most EU citizens regard agriculture as making a positive contribution to preserve rural areas. The Eurobarometer survey can be downloaded from the European Commission website (http://ec.europa.eu/agriculture/survey/2012/389_en.pdf).

South African avocados on course South Africa's avocado growers have confirmed that this year's campaign remains on course to produce a high-volume, high-quality crop, having just shipped the eight-millionth carton of the season. According to the latest figures, the industry is on course to produce a 12.5m carton export crop, matching early-season predictions, made up of 40 per cent greenskin varieties and 60 per cent Hass. This is in contrast to the 2011 production season, when hailstorms during key growing periods cut the crop to just 6.7m cartons.

The last major shipments of South African fruit are expected to arrive in Europe in mid- to late October. According to the South African Avocado Growers' Association (SAAGA) the quality of avocados has been high so far this year and will continue for the remainder of the season. SAAGA is continuing with its promotional activities for the year, with the UK and Sweden targeted in Europe, as it looks to grow exports as well as domestic demand.

Kiwi Gold sales positive New Zealand gold kiwifruit are selling for better than expected prices in the international market this year helped along by a larger higher quality crop. High dry matter content and the resulting good tasting fruit from this year’s kiwifruit crop has encouraged sales, warding off the impact of depressed economies in key markets. The global financial crisis is putting pressure on households in Europe but kiwifruit is part of many people’s regular food purchase and, in the case of the New Zealandese kiwi, 30 per cent of customers account for 80 per cent in volume

of sales. Many buy it for health reasons. The kiwifruit marketer’s predicted gold growers may end up with orchard gate returns of NZ$ 9 per tray or more by the end of the season, although an official forecast on returns won’t be released until August. The New Zealand industry picked 22 million trays of gold this season, higher than forecast in early-season estimates that struggled to quantify the impact of the Psa vine disease. Sales of green kiwifruit have also been doing relatively well, with predictions of orchard gate returns at NZ$3.80-NZ$4 per tray.

Chilean export returns drop 19% Chilean fresh fruit export values fell by 19% year-on-year to US$2.15 billion during the first five months of 2012, according to a bulletin released by the country’s Office of Agricultural Studies and Policy (ODEPA). The fall was mainly driven by lower revenues for key export items such as grapes (-19%), apples (-25.5%), blueberries (-12.9%), cherries (-7.5%) and plums (-18.7%). While some of the fall was due to a decline in volume, the amount of fruit shipped only dropped by 3.2% year-on-year to 1.66 million metric tons (mt), reflecting a significant average decrease in prices. In the case of plums and cherries export volumes actually rose by 3.7% and 17.5% respectively. Kiwifruit shipments rose slightly by 0.3% for the period with a 6.6% fall in revenues; however the recorded period runs before the country significant volumes of this product. The same can be said for easy peelers and oranges, but in their early stages these two fruits notched revenue rises of 11.2% and 46% respectively. For easy peelers the rise is relatively low though considering Chile shipped a tonnage that was 70% higher. Avocados also yielded positive results with 52.3% more fruit, but revenues rose just 4.6%. The bulletin highlighted a downward export

trend for nectarines and peaches, registering falls of 21% and 17.2% respectively for the period, reflecting a lower surface area and a move towards processing. Pear values per kilogram dropped as well with a 17.5% fall in values compared to a minor slip in volumes of 1.2%. The United States continued to be the major importer of Chilean fruits by far but volumes fell by 8.9% to 548,137 mt. A similar trend was seen for Chile’s key continental European entry point the Netherlands, with a 7% drop to 167,095 mt. Elsewhere in Europe, the U.K.’s imports were down by 5.5% at 83,808 mt and Russia bought 18.9% less fruit at 66,497 mt. In contrast, shipments to China more than doubled hitting 97,427 mt, but it should be noted Hong Kong’s imports dropped by more than 25,000MT to 41,511 mt. Taiwan’s imports fell by 7.8% to 33,681 mt. Smaller but increasingly important markets such as Colombia, Brazil and South Korea all showed strength with rises of 14.7%, 33.5% and 23.7% respectively. Price falls were inherent across Chile’s export destinations with negative changes in values relative to volumes. The only destinations in the black compared to the same period in 2012 were China, Colombia, Brazil and South Korea; the latter by just US$12.

Tanzania: Horticulture registers good progress A project aimed at creating conducive environment to enable investment in horticultural produce in the country, financed by Dutch government since 2007 has assisted to bridge the gap between private and public sectors in Tanzania. The Tanzania Horticultural Association (TAHA) Executive Director said the five-year World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD) project has assisted to develop the capacity of key horticultural related agencies and departments under several ministries hence the improved performance. Under this programme, TAHA has donated several equipment thanks to Dutch government funding, to Plant Health Services at the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security and Cooperatives. The Dutch government provided a grant of 750,000 Euros to finance the project. The Arusha based horticultural firms association handed over equipment for inspectorate services in order to improve sanitary and phytosanitary inspection services. Lack of equipment has been identified as one of the major bottlenecks facing inspection activities of horticultural produce at different entry and exit points. TAHA is grateful to the government of the Kingdom of Netherlands for the support which has definitely made working much easier as horticultural producers mainly focus on exports. One of the biggest success stories is the strong link developed between the private and public sectors as they constantly interacted in the course of executing the five different projects with

working groups consisting members from both side in a model public private partnership. Through this kind of arrangement, it is possible to learn from each other a lot, understand how the systems operate and also been able to create own champions in the different agencies and ministries. The country’s horticulture industry has been growing at a snail’s pace compared to neighbouring Kenya and Ethiopia which have registered significant development in the past five years. Other achievements of the project also include: registration of about 365 quality pesticides for use in horticulture, the development of the industry driven national training curriculum, promotion and branding of the industry and the image of TAHA as an institution while the industry has managed to introduce biological control agents. TAHA has been able to create a pool of experts in various fields, who are now working with the Association not only on the WSSD projects but in other areas as needs arise. This has provided a capacity building window for the Association staff as they interact with quality experts at both the local and international levels. Among the challenges faced is delay in incorporating the long-term recommendations due to prolonged policy review processes by government institutions. Despite the odds, the horticulture sector has registered increased earnings from 1.4 million US dollars to 140 million US dollars between 2002 and 2008.

Europe expects less top fruit From various indications it is becoming clear that the European top fruit harvest 2012/2013 will be smaller. This is the result of the disappointing weather conditions. The decrease in production has been estimated differently in various countries. The expectation is that this will have a positive effect on the price. On the other side, experts think that the shortage will possibly be supplemented by countries overseas. A good part has been damaged, as a result of which more go to processing. In Belgium the

first harvest estimates for the new season are disappointing: 30% less apples and 14% less pears are expected because of the unfavourable flowering circumstances, the cold and wet weather and the frost in April. In The Netherlands period of frost at the beginning of February has caused damage in the entire fruit cultivation sector to the value of 85 million Euro; the apple harvest is expected to decrease by 23% and pears by 38%. The picture, however, is changing. In the south the harvest expectations are better than in other areas, especially with regard to the polders.

Estimates in France at the beginning of July indicate a considerable decrease because of night frost and rain during the flowering period. Following rough estimates there will be about 50% less top fruit than last year. In Italy about 80% of pears may be lost. In June there was a serious earthquake and as a result a great deal less pears are expected because irrigation was not possible. Spain also expect a smaller top fruit production, but not as extreme as in Belgium and the Netherlands.

The apple production is expected to decrease by 7,8% and the pear production by 12,5%. British apples are expected to decrease by 50% because of continuous bad weather conditions. In the south of England about 70% of the apple cultivation takes place and this region was also damaged the most. In Poland a bigger harvest is expected as a result of new plantings.

Açai berries Acai berry is the fruit of a species of palm trees called acai palm (Euterpe Oleracea) which is grown mainly in swamps and floodplains in central and Southern America. This fruit is round in shape, about 25 mm in circumference; its color is black-purple and has a large seed in it. It has been cultivated for hundreds of years by the Native Americans as the acai berry is a staple of the local diet. In contrast to the small size acai has a huge variety of nutritional value like few other fruits

in the world. In addition to high quantities of potassium, fiber, calcium, phosphorus and protein it also contains vitamins C, E, B1, B2 and B3. The acai berry is called superfood, because it contains all the daily nutrients needed by the body. Researchers have also shown that the acai berry has the highest number of antioxidants of fruit and vegetables. Each year there are two crops of the fruit being produced.

Commercial tips for small-scale farmers The South Africa’s Farmer Eco-Enterprise Development (FEED) has long experience in business and agricultural development and, whether organizing African farmers to supply international retail outlets or working with organic farmers, believes that the value chain approach is the key to success. Small-scale farmers need to tap into the commercial market if they are to survive and producers need to have a more business-like approach. Mostly, the sector lacks access to inputs, means of production, financial and material resources, as well as technical knowledge and markets. Small-scale farmers lack the managerial and technical competencies necessary to succeed in the highly competitive farming industry. If managed productively and sustainably, increased engagement with smallholders will generate economic activity among some of the world’s poorest people, potentially contributing to poverty alleviation and a lowered dependence on aid.

Small-scale farmers also need a much more refined approach to agricultural development, with the emphasis on commercialization. They need an imaginative, focused and effective small farmer support programme, linking them from production to the markets. These should be also institutional markets such as school feeding schemes, food banks and other government food programmes, as it would be a mistake to expand small-scale agriculture as a production system without creating incentives to become large-scale commercial producers. If the small-scale production system collapses, so could happen with the whole agrifood value chain and linkages to the consumer. The smallholder sector is a key player in this system, with a lot to lose, so it is important to help facilitating and preferably drive commercialization. Agribusinesses, commodity organizations and agro-development agencies need to be able to manage, mentor and guide beneficiaries and new farmers to settle productively and integrate into the value chain.

Partnering with the private sector could develop an incubator farming approach. This would give farmers access to knowledge and skills that will see develop their farming activities as a business. It is necessary also to look at making sure that they have economically sized farm units. This will allow integration into the agrifood value chain on a learning-by-doing basis and reap the benefits of scale economies. FEED aims to provide technical skills transfer, business linkages and professional business management and have developed a Core Farm model. One successful example is a farm in Bronkhorstspruit (RSA) were it provides farmers with training in production, marketing, post-harvest handling, grading and quality control, assisting in the establishment of joint ventures in processing or value-added activities along the marketing chain. The farm includes solutions to improve productivity and output, such as value-adding elements like a nursery, composting process and a pack house. By making sure that farmers are part of the value chain and have a reliable market, the

approach improves income and stability. Having packing houses, which will see the emergence of bulk packing and branding sectors, will also lead to the creation of employment. The most important challenges to be faced by farmers in such projects is for example, that since organic certification is based upon European standards that sometimes are not applicable to South African conditions, certification is often expensive and difficult. To overcome this, FEED is subscribing to group certification of small farmers and engaging South African–based certifiers familiar with the local conditions. Also, agribusiness in general is still driven by commodities. The commodity prices are in turn driven by trade regimes, currency values, and climatic factors, so producers remain ‘price takers’. It will become more and more important to be able to benefit from economies of scale, and very difficult to maintain yourself as a small or even medium-scale commercial producer, unless you are linked to a value-adding support system.
